I kind of feel bad for Olivia. Sebastian really is just a poor woman's Viola and is not nearly as charming or strong as his sister. Olivia fell for Caesario bc s/he understood her and appealed to her as a woman. Don't know if Sebastian will 'get' her the same way. At least Viola got who she really loved and Orsino ended up with the best friend he was attracted to/falling for. I think Viola/Orsino have a better shot at a happy marriage than Olivia/Sebastian.
The only part of the play that I don't like is that when Orsino learns that Cesario was really Viola, he immediatly decides to marry her. Of course, after he learned that Olivia is now off limits. I know it's a comedy, but I just feel bad for Viola, I feel like she was cheated.
Beautiful photography. I hope someone won awards for it. Does anyone know the name of the home they used and where it is? The last shore shot(ha) reminds me or the Orgen/Washington shore in some places. If any of you people want a beautiful trip in America follow the coast line south from Bainbridge Island in Washington state to the upper part of California by the old road. See the redwoods, etc. Best to do it with a tent/Coleman stove and a guitar. A natual high. :) Songs
@bluegrl12491 Its played that way here. I think he probably suspected something, most plays seems to play it that way. But there is no real indication in the script. It would be nice if the fool knew it though :)
i didnt think the site would allow the movie to stay up but it gr8 they let it. I dont think I would ever loved this shakespear play if this movie didnt let me understand the words!!! So happy we didnt do midnightsummers dream, thx teacher!!!!
i think Imogen Stubbs (Viola) really outshone everyone else playing both man and woman so wonderfully, both serious and funny at the same time...And yeah, holding hands with the brother while kissing my husband...ahaha~
saw this movie years ago, shared an appartment with my best friend back then, every week moviesession and loads of popcorn^^ miss those times, love this movie^^
Technically speaking, I don't think this is the *best* play Shakespeare ever did-- if I had to judge their merits side by side. But somehow, Twelfth Night's always been my favorite. All gratitude, for sharing.
I LOVE THIS PLAY AND MOVIE!!!!!!!! ben kingsley man there are no words for how talented this man is. he's bloody fucking brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feste is my favorite character in the movie!!!! so funny. Helena Bonham Carter is super talented!!!!!!!!! she's such a great actress!!!!!!!!
im in love with this story my fav play ever. maybe my previous comment was unclear im aware of what a fool is. my question was that if there was a dif between a bard who travels or a fool who has a master. b/c feste seems to be a bard rather than a fool
im new to shakespears.but ive always knew about him .and this i can say is the best movie ever i cryed at the end the past where she turned around and saw her brother bought tears to my eyes.im playing as olivea in a play next week glad i got to know her part
I don't think this version is as funny as Shakespeare meant it to be. Every time I've seen a live performance of Twelfth Night, the audience was always dying of laughter. This movie seems a bit toned down by comparison.
But it's still wonderful. And Ben Kingsley's still my favorite Feste ever.
Very Nice Movie. I am watching it because I am having an exam on it tomorrow. But believe me, you don't have to even be a shakespeare fan to watch it. It's fun and emotional.
Though I hate it when Shakespeare is played in Victorian garments (what is still better then having his plays performed in modern business or street clothes) I cannot help but like this version of Twelfth Night; especially the twins Viola and Sebastian are well chosen, both for their acting and their resemblance; while the actress played Olivia is a disaster: I do not know if it is the hair or her clothes but never may she be taken for the fair countess Olivia! The movie has a melancholic mood.
wow this is so awesome! thank you so much for posting!
i am not familiar with many of shakespeares plays but out the ones that i do kno this is the only one with a happy ending and i love happy endings so yea this is really kool :)
and also i only figured out after watching this that the movie shes the man is pretty much the same thing as this except modernized, americanized and has more comedy added - kind of like a remake with different actors and actresses. and in shes the man olivia is blonde and viola is a brunette lol :) but i still love both versions
feste seemed more like a bard than a fool. i thought it was bards that traveled around singing and telling stories. fools had a master they had to stay with. maybe im wrong? this has to be my fav Shakespeare play ever.
@inandish I believe the term 'fool' is used so heavily to give a greater sense of irony against his superior wit and wisdom that he holds over the other characters.
@ButtButtDoodle It is isn't it? When you can't understand the cadence of the day it's hard to know why Shakespeare is supposed to be such a genius.
