  • i love this movie! great choice for olivia, I cant help laughing when she gapes after Viola's "OOOLLLIIIVVVIIIAAA!"

  • I kind of feel bad for Olivia. Sebastian really is just a poor woman's Viola and is not nearly as charming or strong as his sister. Olivia fell for Caesario bc s/he understood her and appealed to her as a woman. Don't know if Sebastian will 'get' her the same way. At least Viola got who she really loved and Orsino ended up with the best friend he was attracted to/falling for. I think Viola/Orsino have a better shot at a happy marriage than Olivia/Sebastian.

  • Did anyone else feel so sad for Malvolio and Sir Andrew...poor, rejected, lonely men.....Everyone was so cruel to them.

  • Orsino: phew she's a woman I didn't want to become gay

  • Great production. Really sweet, and funny! (Ben Kingsley was amazing!)

  • The only part of the play that I don't like is that when Orsino learns that Cesario was really Viola, he immediatly decides to marry her. Of course, after he learned that Olivia is now off limits. I know it's a comedy, but I just feel bad for Viola, I feel like she was cheated.

  • Loved Imogen Stubbs and Ben Kingsley in this.... Really fantastic actors.

  • Feste's creepy at the end

  • favorite Shakespeare play, hands down.

  • is this the last episide

  • stephin merritt should've been feste

  • that song at the end is brilliant is there a version of it in one bit somewhere here on youtube anyone :o)

  • Orsino and Viola are SUCH a cute couple in this part. They just keep holding hands and hugging each other, and of course, kissing. It's adorable.

  • SO CUTE HELENA SOOO CUTE!!!

  • @Rukia91554 Shakespear isnt CUTE!

Its so far PAST great cute is an insult!

  • @Thecoldwaterfall I NEVER SAID SHAKESPEAR WAS CUTE I SAID HELENA WAS JESUS CHRIST!

  • ...marvelous acting, Ben Kingsley at his best...thanks so much for uploading

  • Beautiful photography. I hope someone won awards for it. Does anyone know the name of the home they used and where it is? The last shore shot(ha) reminds me or the Orgen/Washington shore in some places. If any of you people want a beautiful trip in America follow the coast line south from Bainbridge Island in Washington state to the upper part of California by the old road. See the redwoods, etc. Best to do it with a tent/Coleman stove and a guitar. A natual high. :) Songs

  • @Songsmirth

It was filmed in Cornwall. Olivia's house is Cotehele near Calstock. The other scenes were filmed at St Michael's Mount I think.

  • I love this play/flim, one of the best Shakespear plays ever!!!!!! :)

  • I think that Feste knew Viola's real identity all along

  • @bluegrl12491 Its played that way here. I think he probably suspected something, most plays seems to play it that way. But there is no real indication in the script. It would be nice if the fool knew it though :)

  • @bluegrl12491 Well, maybe not 'All along', but for a good majority of the time, he certainly did.

  • excellent !!

Movies are full of euphoria.Great music !!

  • need to get this soundtrack!

  • cool twelfth night video now i can actually understand what the hell is in the book lol

  • Everytime I watch this... it just gets greater and greater!!!

  • <3 <3 I loved the movie

i didnt think the site would allow the movie to stay up but it gr8 they let it. I dont think I would ever loved this shakespear play if this movie didnt let me understand the words!!! So happy we didnt do midnightsummers dream, thx teacher!!!!

  • I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks.

  • i think Imogen Stubbs (Viola) really outshone everyone else playing both man and woman so wonderfully, both serious and funny at the same time...And yeah, holding hands with the brother while kissing my husband...ahaha~

  • @maplepapillon1 I actually loved that bit. It meant that despite having new loves in their lives they still were devoted to each other.

  • saw this movie years ago, shared an appartment with my best friend back then, every week moviesession and loads of popcorn^^ miss those times, love this movie^^

  • Toby looks so beautiful here. Well done.

  • toby looks so beautiful here. well done.

  • Is Ben really singing?

  • Great movie!!

    Love Helena! <333

  • Technically speaking, I don't think this is the *best* play Shakespeare ever did-- if I had to judge their merits side by side. But somehow, Twelfth Night's always been my favorite. All gratitude, for sharing.

  • Many thanks for uploading this!

The revelation scene was great. I never imagined them standing so far apart, but it worked best to confuse the heck out of Sebastian.

  • Nothing Shall separate my Love from Shakespeare~~~~ May his Soul rest in perfect Peace

  • Nothing shall separate my love from Shakespeare

  • I actually really hate what they do to Malvolio... I'm not laughing.

  • @lacrosseplayer49 ,Yeah, but i'm glad that in this movie it shows that they all felt bad about it (especially Feste and Maria).

  • I LOVE THIS PLAY AND MOVIE!!!!!!!! ben kingsley man there are no words for how talented this man is. he's bloody fucking brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feste is my favorite character in the movie!!!! so funny. Helena Bonham Carter is super talented!!!!!!!!! she's such a great actress!!!!!!!!

  • for some reason i can't see myself holding hands with my brother while i snog my husband...

  • Toby Stephens is fantastic!!!

  • orsino creeped me out... i like sebastian :D wish he had been around more often...

  • Weird play but I loved it! Helena was great!!

  • Mann, Ben Kingsley always brings something unique to his roles... even when he's not the main character he still knows how to stand out!!!!

i mean damn this guy's gotta friggin theater named after him!

  • my favorite Shakespeare play of all time! haha. so funny and romantic, i can't get enough of this!

  • im in love with this story my fav play ever. maybe my previous comment was unclear im aware of what a fool is. my question was that if there was a dif between a bard who travels or a fool who has a master. b/c feste seems to be a bard rather than a fool

  • @inandish I think he's still a fool, coz his character seems to be deeply attached to Olivia and co.

  • I love this song at the end!! Thanks for posting this video! It made studying for Intro to Shakespeare much more fun. :)

  • ugh, I hate those flovers Viola has in her hair!

anyway, thank you so much for posting this:)

  • The only Shakespearean play I've watched without falling asleep in the middle. :)

  • @FishyTrogo haha agreed, only one i really enjoyed reading, despite not understanding it the first 4 reads :D

  • Ah I love it. Love it love it love it. My favourite movie. Cry EVERY time I watch this bit lol

And the music is just wonderful =D

  • awsome film loved it at one part i thought vila was going to become a lez! lol :)

  • I AGREE THERE WAS SOMETHING JUST GREAT ABOUT BEN KINGSLEY IN THIS MOVIE

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING !!!

  • Hahahhaa at 1:10 his eyebrow. Hahhaa

such a good movie, probably my favorite shakespeare play

  • im new to shakespears.but ive always knew about him .and this i can say is the best movie ever i cryed at the end the past where she turned around and saw her brother bought tears to my eyes.im playing as olivea in a play next week glad i got to know her part

  • I don't think this version is as funny as Shakespeare meant it to be. Every time I've seen a live performance of Twelfth Night, the audience was always dying of laughter. This movie seems a bit toned down by comparison.

But it's still wonderful. And Ben Kingsley's still my favorite Feste ever.

  • Very Nice Movie. I am watching it because I am having an exam on it tomorrow. But believe me, you don't have to even be a shakespeare fan to watch it. It's fun and emotional.

  • I would so love to do a fancy ball like this!

  • yay!

  • I love Ben Kingsley's singing he does it beautifully.

  • One day God thought: here is the time to make something as genial as I have not done before.

    And created Shakespeare.

Than he thouhgt: here is the time to create somebody, who can show him to everybody.

    And created Ben Kingsley.

The same happened to Bach and McFerrin too.

  • @golaxo haha awesome

  • Thank you so much watBORG!!I enjoyed it.

  • man, Feste is such an amazing character. so glad i was able to do a production as that character a few years back. so much fun

  • wow. this is so much different than just reading the play... it was awesome :)

  • Thanks for posting it :D

  • Though I hate it when Shakespeare is played in Victorian garments (what is still better then having his plays performed in modern business or street clothes) I cannot help but like this version of Twelfth Night; especially the twins Viola and Sebastian are well chosen, both for their acting and their resemblance; while the actress played Olivia is a disaster: I do not know if it is the hair or her clothes but never may she be taken for the fair countess Olivia! The movie has a melancholic mood.

  • I love Shakespeare.. so emotional

  • wow this is so awesome! thank you so much for posting!

i am not familiar with many of shakespeares plays but out the ones that i do kno this is the only one with a happy ending and i love happy endings so yea this is really kool :)

  • and also i only figured out after watching this that the movie shes the man is pretty much the same thing as this except modernized, americanized and has more comedy added - kind of like a remake with different actors and actresses. and in shes the man olivia is blonde and viola is a brunette lol :) but i still love both versions

  • Ah, such a lovely happy ending. :^)

  • feste seemed more like a bard than a fool. i thought it was bards that traveled around singing and telling stories. fools had a master they had to stay with. maybe im wrong? this has to be my fav Shakespeare play ever.

  • @inandish I believe the term 'fool' is used so heavily to give a greater sense of irony against his superior wit and wisdom that he holds over the other characters.

  • Aww, that was amazing :D

  • *applause!* That was a good one. Thank you for putting it online. I really loved it :)

  • This was a greate movie! sadly my english is not the best (espesially "old english"), and it was much i dident understand, but i stil loved it.

  • @animearigatoo actually William Shakespeare wrote in New English

  • lol, yeah, old english is pretty much a completely different language.

  • It's early modern english. So you are still able to understand most of it, once you get used to it.

Now old English is something you really can't understand, unless you studied it.

  • @SamCodyMc so, i need to work on my english very hard .

  • OMG I loved this!!

    Ben Kingsley best actor EVER!!!!!!!!!

That last bit where he says "I'll strive to please you every day" OMG that was fantastic!!

  • narly... Ben Kingsley when he looks at the camera. best. Feste. ever.

  • Viola looks so pretty at the dance.

  • gosh, I think I just exploded from the cuteness! :D

  • YAY! Love the ending! =)

  • i love the ending when the brother and sister are kissing their lovers and they reach for each other hands. thats so cute!

  • Thank you so much for posting this up! This is now definitely my favorite Shakespear play!:)

  • @ButtButtDoodle It is isn't it? When you can't understand the cadence of the day it's hard to know why Shakespeare is supposed to be such a genius. This movie helps you to understand the difficultly of the prose of him. It's like learning a new language by immersion. :) Surperb actors and directing. Did it win any awards? I don't have a tv so don't follow any award programs.

  • Harry potter connection:

    Helena (Olivia) plays Bellatrix

    Imelda (Maria) plays Umbridge

Toby (Orsino) is the son of Maggie Smith, who plays McGonagall

  • My family loves this movie, and we watch it pretty much every time we get together. We quote it to each other and no one else gets what we're talking about, and we notice every time we see one of the actors in something else. Twelfth Night has always been my favorite play, and this is my favorite movie! You really can watch it again and again and appreciate it more every time. I wish it the attention it deserves.

  • HOORAH! Awesome movie!

  • Pretty funny, Kingsley's superb.

And Stephens surely looks fabulous with the moustache :)

  • LOVE. THIS. MOVIE. 5 Stars!!

  • amazing ..... thanks for sharing this film i was seeking for it it was very hard to find it but at last you made it easy thx alot

  • Thanks so much for posting this video, it helped so much b/c I have a exam on it :S And it was very funny and quite enjoyable!! :D

  • Thanks for sharing! This was really amusing to watch. :)

  • Feste is my favorite character..Thanks for sharing

  • His final song is done very well in this production

  • Thanks Will, Trevor Nunn, Helena Bon (so Bon)ham Carter,...and you watBorg- nice cuts I feel so good after this.

  • This movie is so great! I love it. I have a Shakespeare class right now in college, and even though we are not doing this play, it was nice to already be very familiar with some of Shakespeare's work other than Romeo and Juliet. Ben Kingsley is amazing. He is truly a great actor.

  • thanks soo much!! it helped me a bit further in my quest- to see all of Helena's movies, she is the best!!

thanks again, it was a great film :)

  • Wonderful! Wonderful.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this film, it was fantastic!!

  • THANKS to whoever posted this movie! It's a great version of what I think is one of Shakespeare's BEST plays!

  • I'm having trouble deciding if this or The Comedy of Errors done in 2009 by American Players Theatre in Spring Green, WI is the best.

  • WatBorg , i can't believe you told all the juicy parts in the movie summary!!!! you are not supposed to tell the story but entice people... that was lame, but thanks for the movie anyway

  • lol this was great, lots of fun in the end

  • This is very much a good movie, but then again it is Shakespeare. Thanks for uploading!! Go HBC.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this movie. I had to read twelfth night for my english literature studies but only now do I truly understand how the characters are set mixed. And I learned to appreciate the excuisite humour of the Shakespearian play(s). Thumbs up!

  • thank you so friggin much omg i love this movie

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! Brings up so many good memories of watching this as a kid. :')

  • Thanks for uploading! :D

    Amazing movie.

    Two thumbs up.

  • Beautiful play, indeed! I can't keep my eyes of the Duke, though. He's very handsome; I hope he's not gay. He's too handsome for one's eyes; makes one doubt one's vision.

  • I agree for the Duke !

You should watch Jane Eyre (2006 version) with the same actor (Toby Stephens) as Rochester. He is... Waoooooooooooooo ! ;-)

  • Does anyone know where one can find this song?

  • Viola: "I prithee, and I'll pay thee bounteously, Conceal me what I am, and be my aid For such disguise as haply shall become The form of my intent." -

A pretty good version of Shakespeare s play; decent actors, nice costumes, picturesque scenery and fitting music. But then again: If the plays of Shakespeare are used for making a movie the outcome is usually good or better, sometimes even magnificent because the plays of Shakespeare are brilliant and to ruin them in movies is almost an art...

  • Thank you so much for this upload!

  • Thank you for uploading this. I have my promotion exam and this helped so much.

  • Just remember that the events in the film are mixed up in comparison to the play

  • from me as well thanks for uploading :-)

its a great play, and most of the characters are very good in this version.

playing this myself, its interesting to see other interpretations as well.

    thanks again

  • :D yey thank you for the upload so much!!

i play viola and i wanted to know how the play is in english and how other actors interpret their characters. i think it helped me and i hope i'll act viola in a good way.... :D

    thank you again :D ^^

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to post this on Youtube. If it wasn't for this opportunity I would never have seen it. Keep it up. I loved it!!

  • Thank you for posting this movie. Not only was it an enjoyable form of entertainment but it was most helpful in aiding my understanding of the play that i had been desperately trying to understand.

I do say this is one of the better portrayals I've seen of a Shakespearean play. The cast did a brilliant job and I am pleased at the accuracy of the lines.

    Again I thank you.

  • thank you very much for posting this! It is so much easier to understand the play when you see it acted out.

I love the character of Festes... He seems to be the only one who really makes sense when he is supposed to be the fool! Haha

  • Exactly! Not unlike in King Lear. The only two sane and reasonable characters are the fool and the "crazy" guy.

  • thank you watBORG :)

  • good movie
