Silas is no killing machine. He was mistreated. If you look up any offical human development website, you will find that if you don't go through a stage of your life properly, it is very likely it will mess up your life as you get older. It is only because Silas wasn't loved as a child (except for maybe his mother), that he turned out the way he did.
