  • This was my favorite song in my college days. At the dorm, one of my good friends (Norman) asked me to sing this song. I sang it all and hit every note; the group was as stunned as I. The next weekend Norman drowned in a swimming accident. I'm 66 years old now and have never sung a song to another person.

  • I was Stage Manager for Mel Till for 4 yrs in Branson, Mo. This was always the last song of the show. No matter where, when, who or what, when Mel started singing "Mariah" we knew it would soon be time to go home. This is a great song. I don't like this arrangement as much as even Mel's 18 piece band arrangement. But it is still good.

  • I've always wished that I could sing this song well. The people who have heard me sing also wish that I could sing this song well....... or, any other song well, for that matter!! :o(

  • are these people part of the original line up?

  • The sun was al.............(big breath).....ways shining. What's with this. Not only the worse version ever recorded perhaps the worst commemoration of the Kingston Trio ever. This definitely deserves to be ground up and made into road asphalt. Just simply AWEFUL........

  • i just turned 18 and my name is mariah and i was named after this song!

  • @miyamia777 That is very cool! Mariah Carey was also named after the song-Bob Shane

  • @miyamia777 Me too! (well... my middle name)

  • @k4tj3 no, not the original lineup. i'm the only surviving member of the original lineup. these guys are handpicked by me to continue the kt legacy. they do a fine job, and there are still lots of folks who love to hear the kt music live. aloha, bob shane

  • @debobwan Magnificent!! I grew up listening to Robert Goulet crank out his song. Man, he really belted it out!! I hadn't heard the song in many decades. Met a lady with a baby named "Mariah". She's never heard of the song. I told her to YouTube it. Got the song in my head, so, I YouTube'd it as well. Glad I did!!

Now, I get to listen to the original singer sing it. You guys are awesome!!

Thanks for posting this, Bob!! Peace & Blessings to you!!

  • @debobwan Thanks Bob. Aloha. You are my Dad's Heroes!!

  • @debobwan that was from me Bob!! much Love to all

  • @debobwan AND, they do a fine job...Outstanding..

  • Vocally, these guys are the best trio by far. New harmonies, stronger

vocals and still a great act. With all due respect to those who came

before, vocally this Trio is dynamite. Saw them in Gilbert, AZ earlier

this year. Excellent show, very good singing.

  • Isn't is spelled "Moriah"? Not Maria.

  • These guys are great. Always have been. The arrangement of this song is uniquely theirs. Though I'm not crazy about the arrangement, they perform it very well. Musicians and arrangers often have different ideas about how something should sound. It's just a different interpretation. That is one of the great things about live music vs. canned stuff. Our interpretations define us. Our musical tastes decide which version we like best. Even Frank Sinatra said, "I did it my way."

  • Did this song influence Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary"?

  • I am a big Kingston Trio fan, but this is the worst rendition of this song I have ever heard.

  • I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE. Definitely the Kingston Trio "lite". No original performers and no sound even close to the originals. When they lost Dave Guard they improved immensely. When the lost John Stewart it was all over. John went on to make many records of his own. Nick Reynolds reunited with Bob Shane off and on, but the magic could never be regained. I loved the originals. I hate this group.

  • @Badams4u

Nothing to hate. These guys are great and they're keeping the Kingston Trio music alive.

  • @Badams4u Awww! :( I wouldn't say I hate this! But I have Sold Out, Make Way, From the Hungry i, and several other albums on vinyl. I love what I think of as the _original_ Kinston Trio sound. This performance seemed a little bit melodramatic to me. But then, I think the song is kind of a melodrama. ;-)

I'm also a bit biased because I think the guys were great-looking back in 1960! But that was before I was born.... :)

  • 15 people don't know what real folk music is....

  • I like Frankie Laine's version

  • Im proud to be named Maria when I hear this song :)

  • My name is Mariah, & the original spelling of the name is Maria, the H was added so as to not confuse it. I inherited the name from my great grandmother who was married in 1885, long before Ms. Carey existed....just call upon me to blow the love back into your life, I was raised to be the wind, it is a deep part of my spirit.....love to you all!~

  • My name is MariaH~

  • There are lots of ways to spell "Mariah" It's all pronounced the same, like my name is spelled like Maria & pronounce "Mariah". So is my Great Aunt Maria's name. It's the old Scandinavian spelling of the name.

  • The Kingston Trio are very big to those of us sophisticated music fans that find ourselves "in search of the lost chord" like the 'ole Moody Blues Album and 1960's Folk instead of just 60's Folk Rock which is immortalized by Bob Dylan etc. I, too, forgot about this Kingston Trio classic "They Call the Wind Maria". Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.

  • I still love these guys. We have all grown old together.

  • Wow didn't know they were still performing Mariah...

  • that would be the writers of the song...they spelled it that way.

  • some retard doesn't know how to spell "Mariah"

  • @BixZsc The song title has always been spelled M-A-R-I-A.

  • the trio cut wind//////phew

  • i was named after this song

  • @jasartrip9598 Wind?

  • @jasartrip9598 Same here :p

  • This performance was in 2006 and features George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty

  • when was this performance and who were members of the trio here?

  • The voices are not those of the original Trio, of course not, but the music is certainly evocative of Dave, Nick, and Bob. So good to hear the Trio well into the 21st Century!

  • The first version of this song I heard was Jim Ed Brown!

  • They call the wind Mariah, not Maria.

  • This is actually an old folk song...

  • I'm sorry. But, this "Kingston Trio" should change its name to Pale Imitation. They do a disservice to the original players and to the fans,

  • @eirpcalc

"...original players" and "fans" -- of what? The original Broadway show? Kingston Trio? "Hitch Your Wagon"?

  • I love the KT but I agree with you on this great broadway tune.

  • cool voices

  • hey my name mariah hahaa

  • my gfs name is mariah :) <3

  • lol they call the wind my name:)

  • Who the hell are these guys?

  • hat\s anyone heard te Patsy cline verion. I yjink it was on the album South of border

  • Come on! This is a Kingston Trio song, but it's not the Kingston Trio! How cheesey can you get?

  • The way the original KT (Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane) did this song was much much better than this - both the arrangement and the melody. I don't like the way this incarnation of the KT changed the melody -- on any of the verses. The original KT's minor key modulation on verse 2 was great. This version isn't.

  • It is Maria w/ accent above the a ... That is how Allen Jay Lerner wrote it for Paint your Wagon.

  • Glad they sang it first, others knew how to avoid the same wimpy presentation.

  • Mariah Carey!

  • This was ok but you should listen to a real mistro: Frankie Laine's version......Of course you can go back to the Sons of the Pioneer.

  • well maypo402 ....somebody just has to bitch and moan ...so tell all us where you have played at and all the tunes you do

  • and they call the wind...........wind

  • its "Mariah" not Maria

  • This is a bad version of the song. Frankie Laine and a host of others do it better.

  • They Call the Wind Mighty

  • I mean is it D. Guard or Stewart?

  • Current Trio l-r George Grove, Bill Zorn, Rick Dougherty. Guard passed away in 1991 and Reynolds and Stewart in 2008.

  • who's the Trio on stage here?

  • You have to be kidding...

  • Most people don't know the Kingston trio....

  • Mariah Carey says she was named after this song.

  • Perhaps, but her parents misspelled it. Ths song title doesn't contain an H.

  • Comment removed

  • the browns do this better than anyone

  • I agree about Harve Presnell, unfortunately can't find him singing it.

  • I just found it by Harve. It's not under any name other than the the song title..

  • I like the kingston trio, and I respect them for singing it first, put I think that Harve Pressnel did the best job on that song

I think the arrangment for the way it was done in the movie also accented the lonlyness of the song

  • My niece is Mariah, and my Mom, her Nana sings this with Mariah, and when they get the Fire is Joe, Mariah sings The fire is Joke...lol She will be 4 in March, such a cutie!

  • my names mariah.i was named after this!

  • my name is Mariah!..but everyone calls me riah

  • Sigh, I feel about 14. Who is the lead singer in this? are these the original KT?

  • no they are all new members.

  • I have had the pleasure of seeing the original Kingston Trio perform a few times, and have had the pleasure of chatting with them one on one.I consider myself one of their devoted fans since their beginnings. I have all of their original albums. In my opinion, the Kingston Trio died when Dave Guard left. Before I learned of Daves death, I asked Bob Shane, "What's Dave doing now?" Bob then said to me, "He's doing nothing! He's DEAD!" Now wasn't that a smart ass answer to a fan!

  • I had the pleasure of hearing the Gambell Grove Shane version of the trio and they were great! Shane busted a guitar string and complained about Martin strings. Gambell and Grove were the kindest most gracious people and I was able to have a nice chat with them. Shane was a lot more aloof.

I like Shane's version of this better than this one even tho the current group has such great harmony. Re Presnell, I heard that his character was added to the film because Eastwood couldn't handle it.

  • Let Harve Pressnel do that, please !

  • I beg you.

  • Clint Eastwood did not song a wind call maria he song i talk to the tree

  • yeah he didnt sing it, but it was in his movie thats what he means! paint your wagon.

  • I remember hearing this beautiful song sung by the original broadway singer on the Ed Sullivan show way back in time. I also am a big fan of the original Kingson Trio.

  • lovely

  • I like it! ... not too familiar with the song (think this is my dad's fave tho) ... but I must say - for a skinny balding white guy, buddy is working those bongos with FEELING ;)

  • One of the great songs, beautifully sung!!!

  • I was lost, so gone and lost not even God could find me...great line

  • @annachestnut

the line isn't gone and lost.....it is Goll-durn lost. Originally it was G...D...

In any event this is the worse ever version sung by the worst KT imitators ever born.

  • wow- ive read some really dumb things on youtube and I think this is the worste comment yet. First off the song is beautiful. Second off the Smothers Brothers harmonies and music abilities are awesome. I would put all the money I have down saying that you prob, have horrible taste in music and that you are bad at playing it.

  • @ztubs6 That kind of attitude will get you hurled into the lake that burns with fire and sulfur.

  • No but you are.

  • There's always Rap.

  • very masculine

  • In what way?

  • I don't know...like mature men singing. nice!

  • George Grove was in the Trio with Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. The other two guys are stand-ins. The instrumental artistry is as good as the original, but the voices are not those are of three men in their 70's, who we remember from better times. I miss Dave, Bob, and Nick, and the Stewart version of the Trio.

  • eh,,,,this is ok, but its nothing compared to the original version with Bob, Dave, & Nick

  • right on you are a real music fan!

  • How did these dudes take the name of one of the greatest groups of all time?

  • What dso you mean?

  • Bob Shane had been touring with two of them for years, in fact George Grove has been in the group since the '70s. Bob had a heart attack three years ago and had to quit touring.

These guys have Bob and Nick's blessings to keep touring and performing as the Trio.

  • I'm sure Bob Shane has approved this configuration of the group and is still raking in those royalty checks.

  • They are authorized to continue on with the group's legacy by Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. Shane still receives money from these performances, and occasionally still appears with them.

Zorn and Grove worked with Shane for many years. This group sure misses Shane's voice. Every edition of the Trio still sounded right as long as Bob was there. Now it doesn't.

  • This song was the backing to a Disney TV show Mariah - Anyone know ?

  • not one of them are the original. sucks

  • They sound pretty good in this most recent ensemble. I would like to hear how they perform some of the more famous KT songs like Tom Dooley, Greenback Dollar, Where have all the flowers gone, etc. Please add them Debobwan if possible. Thanks.

  • Lively but faithful revisit of this KT song. Harmony and rhythm changes are welcome as is overall ensemble effort. Zorn's lead baritone is impressive. More please, debobwan.
