A good bit! Filter mats in the skimmer box, a separate pump running a pressurized filter and UV light, plus the small pools make for settling chambers of sorts that get cleaned regularly with a pond vac
the music by your friend is truly perfect for this video ! i am amazed at your insight and how beautiful it turned out for you . i am in the process of transforming an existing pond and have no clue where to begin.the lighting and little brook /waterfall are so great and i would love to do something like that as well .. i just love it !!
LOL! The beast is Jim Olson, who put the slide show together! He's the guy in front of the backhoe at about the two minute mark, and there's a picture of him on Lisa Carrell's MySpace page serenading the fish.
Actually only have about 1200 bucks in materials and equipment -I shopped hard for the kit, the labor is the really expensive part, and since my friends work for beer and food... Couldn't have done it without friends! And the willingness to tote a lot of rocks. As for wildlife, lots of frogs who like to jump up and scare hell out of me, birds, including about a zillion cedar wax-wings on migration this spring, and surprisingly, honey bees.
I think you did a fantastic design job. It looks like a natural part of the landscape--no easy feat. And I love your lighting. I think I'll have to save up to add light to our pond this summer, along with lots more rocks and gravel and poolside planting. I goes on forever, doesn't it!
Yes it does! And thanks! The lighting has been one of my favorite parts. Makes for a lot more time to enjoy the pond, plus the fish like the bugs that come to the lights!
OK, things I learned:1)If you're gonna have koi, have a bottom drain system. Period.2)Koi get BIG! Fast! 3)No such thing as too much filtration. 4)Herons are not my friends. Sheer sides and deep water are. 5)koivetforum is a site I wish I'd found before building. Answers to freaking everything you ever wanted to know about keeping koi. Absolutely invaluable. 6) Should done this years ago. Best money and sweat spent in a looong time.
Oops, last comment posted as being from Jim, 'cause I wasn't sharp enough to pay attention. For some reason the first comment I posted telling some of the things I learned has failed to post as well. I shall try again! And by the way, it's a 'crystal' pond because of the mineral specimens that comprise the waterfall - amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz drusy, unakite, petrified wood, agate and such. It's really quite sparkly!
Oh, one other thing - about the concrete. Don't think I'll do that again. Friends who are pros tell me the 45mil liner will stand up to a dog, and the ph is a buggar to maintain with concrete! I'd also make it deeper to help with the horrific summer heat here in Hotlanta area :D
Thank You All for the kind words! We have a small problem...... The fish are outgrowing their home. Now we have to decide where to put a 30,000gal pond and how to link it to this one without interfering with the seating area for the outdoor movie theatre (15 x 12 foot sceen)
UV filter is in place so the water is much clearer now - and you should see the light show at night! New video of this pond coming soon and will follow with a vid of the new pond when we get that started
nice pond, now add colored lights ,blue ,green red.then seed the surrounding lawn. nice full manicured lawn always look better. then get a uv clarifier 2 make the water crystal clear.after all it is lisa /crystal pond/.
Kinda bad?? It looked terrible! Second day into it, I was thinking 'Oh dear gods, what have I done??' And yeah, I can come to your house, but boy, it'll cost ya! Contractor estimates ran between 10 and 15 grand. Couldn't swing that by a looong shot. I've got 1200 in it, including backhoe rental, but not chiropractic help.
I think it's great you cemented it not only to dog proof it but you don't have black water like every other pond. I love ponds except for the dark water. Yours is very nice.
!!! It's beautiful! Stunning Beautiful! I absolutely love it! I especially love the statue of Guan Yin, give the pond a very peaceful and safe feeling. well done!
sorry - but I only have 1 cd worth of music recorded right now and I do not have rights to anyone elses music.... hopefully you will like my next cd - much different - actually - what ever - I had fun playing it and playing in the dirt - but thanks for watching all the videos!
Why did you concrete the bottom of the pond? You said to dog proof it, is your pup prone to jumping into the water? I am contemplating the same issue when I start my pond in the spring.
The pup in the video is about 80 pounds. Dogs like that can destroy a pond liner just by walking across it. Labs can not stay away from water. He doesnt bother the fish but he does like to play in the water.
The pump and light are the easiest part. Just make sure that the bottom edge of the skimmer door is about 1 2/5" under the waterline and that the weir is level. There are several sites on the web selling affordable pump and filter systems. Best to find someone local incase you have issue with the pump. The first pump we installed died after a couple of weeks and the supplier replaced for free.
Ebay has kits or you can buy piece by piece for cheaper than any store that sales pond kits, look at there items or part name and then go to ebay and find the parts
Go to pondmarket dot come they are here on youtube as well they have there website and on teh left side of there home page it has formulas and calculators it should be in there to determine what you need, they even have free ebooks to download with good info
Watch out man! We have several people offering imported beer and steaks for our help on their ponds! Oddly enough - no one has offered sushi - go figure.
I'm putting together another video showing what the pond and fish look like now. This pond was put together in November - the flora has gone insane since then - frogs have moved in (2pound frogs)and humming birds dragon flies the size of small helicopters, several finches and one sharp-shooting falcon.
May I come over from Australia and live with you in your garden....pleasssseeee
Great job and beautiful, thank you for sharing Lisa. HAPPY NE YEAR.

That is the original music from my best bud Jim Olson, who put the slide show together. It's from his cd Following Alice. Personally, I love it!
