Col du Tourmalet looks sooo tough this year :/ 134km in the stage after a (1) catagory climb and before another (HC) its going to be AWESOME TO WATCH... also contador has lost time soo he will attack FOR SURE!!!!!!
Why did he go? Because he knew he could easily sustain a slightly higher speed than the peloton at that moment, yet a significant speed increase, which was sure to arrive eventually, would force him to drop off. This gave him a buffer, so to speak, and allowed him to complete the climb with the peloton, thus giving him vital points.
YOu sure this wasn't the race he was trying to solidify his green jersey in teh TDF. If you remember, Cavendish crashed in the final 5 K in an easy stage but was still in reach of the green jersey on the final stage. Thor decided to make sure he got all of teh sprint points he needed!
@brann45 No it's not, he's not in the world champion kit, or even this year's Garmin Cervelo kit. This is from the year he won the green jersey - 2010. Yeah, it's the same mountain but...it's not this year?
@surething37 The comment was wrote nine month ago, so the writer was talking about 2010 tour, on this Tour, it was Petacchi who won the green jersey, Thor won it in 2009.
@Gondo60 It wasn't intended as an attack, he did it because he knew that the tempo uphill in the peloton was lower than what he could keep. So he went solo at his own tempo and let himself get caught by the peloton later on. This was all his tactic to save energy over the mountain, not to try and go all the way in a break away.
A super Pro. He earns his pay for sure.

This was simply amazing, the most brutal way to win a green jersey. Only the best could.

I love how the rest of the peloton just watched him go and said "yeah, right, he'll be back."

@Gondo60 i doubt they would care about anyone, a breakaway 134km from finish in a mountain stage has almost never holds.

@Gondo60 yeah, but you still get points for the attack if you do it in the right time.
