  • sorry dude but since when do you hold your breath during a lift?? its the first thing you learn to not do, cause of headaches and anneurysms

    I agree, you shouldn't hold for the whole set, but during the 1-2sec pull up to standing you don't want to exhale - a little "hiss" is ok, bad for most people's backs & strength. I'd definitely do a whole breath in between each rep, but do that with weight on ground.

    About 1/3 of what supports your spine during something like a deadlift is intra-abdominal pressure. As soon as you exhale (move diaphragm up) you lose pressure.

  • @D69D You're mistaken. It's called the valsalva maneuver and is necessary to increase intra-abdominal pressure to protect the spine on heavy lifts. Google valsalva maneuver for an explanation of why.
