This song is wonderful. It never fails to make the Celtic blood in me flow; it really puts me in touch with my Scottish and Irish ancestral roots. Thanks for posting this.
love the song, i was looking for their new version feat the RTE Orchestra, but i haven't found on youtube yet, thanks for uploading this version, is also great
1st verse The nobility was plentiful, And ordinary folk from Scotland, The school master and the minister - With the warrior McAuley there. chorus t was Donal, it was Donal, It was Donal made the wedding, It was Donal and Morag that made a famous wedding. 2nd verse The meat of hens and geese there were, With a dozen cormorants and more, Of all the foods on offer there. The tender chicken they did prefer.
@MotherShrimp This song is taken from Altan's album called 'Harvest Storm' issued by Green Linnet Records in 1992 [GLCD 1117]. The song was originally from Rathlin Island, off the coast of County Antrim, in Northern Ireland. Only two verses of the song had survived because the Gaelic language (Gaelge) was dying out at the time when the song was collected. (Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh's father (Mairead Mooney is a transliteration of her name in English) wrote another two verses in the same style.
I heard this on Keil Na Gael and have been trying to find it for 6 months. Does Altan have this on another CD with more voices singing the choruses? This seems shortened and soft. But I do go for it!
@schwarzfalk Gaelic. Irish--Scots sounds similar but there are differences. Manx as well. It is a language of poets, passionate and subtle. There are any number of sites if you'd like to begin learning it and classes in most cities which have deep Irish roots.
@schwarzfalk There's a common misconception that Tolkien created the elven and dwarvish languages. Admittedly I haven't read any Tolkien, but when I was using the name "Feohdys" on a message board a member asked me if it was a dwarvish word.
He had the meaning right, but the origin was wrong. It does indeed mean nausea; abomination, but it's Manx. The elven and dwarvish languages seem to be heavily derived from the Celtic languages.
Is iontach an t-amhrán seo....agus is sár amhránaí agus Ceoltóir í Mairéad1!

Very nice. For some reason it reminds me somewhat of Dulaman, which is another one of their great songs.

I love this song. I'm sure this is one of the greatest and sweetest songs in the world.
Actually I have once sung this lovely masterpiece together with Síle Denvir of Liadan
and Cathy Jordan of Dervish when they were not on the stage. Altan is greater than
Felix or Wag...

I stumbled upon this album many years ago and immediately fell in love with Altan. This song in particular speaks to the Irish soul like no other.

Same here! I have it on Altan's excellent Harvest Storm album, which is where I think this recording was first released (correct me if I'm wrong).
