The ONLY way to save money with a programmable thermostat, is if you ONLY program it for the HEATING mode, and you have a GAS or OIL forced air furnace.
Unless you have a Heat Pump system. Videos like this fool many Heat Pump owners into thinking that a programmable thermostat will save them money on their heating bill. On a Heat Pump, if you turn it way down, then crank it back up, the Auxiliary heater coils are going to come on, which uses WAY more energy than just leaving the thermostat alone would. Same with the A/C in the summer, only let the house get about 4 degrees warmer during the day.
