  • i wonder you could review one of my fave films; Gattaca. That film should be noted as it was underrated during its initial release. It is a very good film.

  • this movie scared me to death...really its made me so afraid that ill make a bad decision and end up doing something i don't want to do...

then again i might just be paranoid

  • You're full of shit Matthew. The real reason this movie was made was for an awesome soundtrack that every mediocre Youtuber could use to soundtrack their spaceship/ space battles pornos.

  • I disagree. I think the reason this movie is compared to an after-school special is not so much because it shows the consequences of drug use but because it lacks depth. The characters are shallow, selfish, and one-dimensional, and the misfortunes that befall them are implausible to the point of being cartoonish.

I just think if you want to make a movie that's a downer, there are plenty of real-life stories of devastation you could use for inspiration...

  • I saw this movie in the theater and I left feeling like shit. As I was leaving some lady had her baby with her. I said as I was leaving "you seriously brought your baby to THIS movie?" I mean even if the kid can't understand the film the music alone will fuck you up.

  • IM CONFUSED MATTHEW'S #1 FAN!!! AAAHH!!!! :-D

This is one of my favorite movies!

  • I think one of the real beauties of the film is that you CANNOT point one real problem. Society, a lack of love, lethargy or even drugs . . . all of them are mere factors, causing the characters to become more and more problematic until they end up in prison . . . or worse.

  • This is a beautiful film. Lives up to its title. An ode to the addicted. It seems mean, as in terms of character arcs, the drug is actually the protagonist that comes out on top in the end, but thats life. Making or watching a film like this can be an exorcise for the demons if we've lived this in real life.

Great review. And you didn't even mention the gorgeous photography.

  • wow matthew. good review. I feel horrible after watching your review. I better do something instead of watching movie critics on youtube....... ... Oh look, SFdebris has a new vid up!

  • All of this AND Jennifer Connelly's rug. Awesome!

  • I couldn't dissagree with you more on this one dear brother.

I thought the whole thing was a cynical, meanspirited, waste of time, and I didn't find any redeeming value in watching it.

The only thing I fealt after watching it is wishing I hadn't.

  • mean spirited? Really?

  • very much so I thought. The movie (I thought) was compleetly unredeeming, it was a cynical look at people who had nothing but aweful things happen to them, and then it ended. I just don't understand what value it had, or what I was supposed to take away from it other than feeling bad.

  • Here comes Ron with da comments. Ahem.

A career or work could not have saved Ms. Goldfarb, the mother. The problem of this movie was not drugs, and it was not time wasting. The ultimate problem was the lack of love.

Seymour, the husband, left her. All the mother wanted in the whole world was for her son to visit her, and she felt so alone that the only way she felt she could get that is if she appeared on television. She wanted so badly for togetherness, to hear her son say "I love you".

  • The young couple in the movie experience better highs when laying on a couch together, not from drugs.

The author of the novel, in the intro, describes the ultimate problem - the American dream. This pursuit of materialism above all else.

When Harry proposes she open up her own fashion shop, they fall in love with that goal which is not worth more than risking getting arrested, addicted to drugs, and addicting customers. A minimum wage job would do, and that was they needed to realize.

  • The real villain in this movie isn't drugs. It's actually society. The real evil people are the police, the doctors, the people on the subway - the system and society.

This is a story about four people who fell through the cracks while society watched and did nothing.

They exploited Marion's drug addiction rather than get her to rehab. They through addictive diet pills at the mom without asking why she wanted them.

Watch the movie, and try counting the number of indifferent assholes.

  • the best review of CM's career

  • lol "career".

  • this was good

  • why is he posting new reviews in stead of finishing the 2001 review?

  • There are two types of reviews he does, requested reviews like this one and in-depth reviews like 2001. He'll post the rest of the 2001 eventually.

  • 2001 Part 2 will be up on Monday.

  • Because you touch yourself at night.

  • how come u didnt mention anything about the ass to ass scene?

  • Because I'm trying to forget! lol.

  • another greata review man, I have to look into this film some time.

  • Somehow I knew instantly that you would like this movie. I did too. First time I watched it, it was back-to-back with Donnie Darko. My brain almost went on strike afterward.

  • I had a similar but opposing reaction to this movie; it was so good that I NEVER want to see it again. I'm a better person for having seen it and I'll recommend it to others, but I came away from it feeling so sick that the thought of watching it again isn't appealing.

    Except the ass-to-ass part...

  • I've had similar reactions to other films - minus the ass-to-ass, lol. House of Sand and Fog was an amazing film, but something I just can't bring my self to watch again.

  • I had that "love the film but I do NOT want to see it again" with Platoon while strangely I did not feel that for Full Metal Jacket.

  • Hm. It's been a while since I saw this but yeah, I remember feeling... afwul... awfully ashamed of my own doing-nothingness.

    Still, I'm not doing drugs.

  • I'm right there with you, Matthew. I also felt awful after watching this film.

  • This is one of the most powerful films I've seen in a long time.

  • "Stay in school, drink milk, don't do drugs, and you'll get work." Mr. T.

  • I must admit, this movie would've been less depressing...and a LOT weirder...if Mr T had shown up in it. XD

  • LMAO!

  • Now quit jibba-jabberin' and post the rest of that 2001 review.

  • If I want to watch a comical review, I'll watch The Nostalgia Critic, AVGN, The Amazing Athiest, or even Pruane (who is infact a freak). Those people are funny (except Prune, he's a freak). Matthew is NOt funny. Atleast Pruane's "loserness" (yes, I am using quotation marks, because loserness is not a word) is entertaining. Plus he does not spend his entire video yelling at you and over-pronounciating everything. Have fun with that. Thumbs down, c'mon people.

  • Drugs er bad, mkay.

I'm half tempted to pay for a review of Up In Smoke after this....

Anyway, it's too bad this movie doesn't address successful people who do drugs. What about successful guys on Wall Street with cocaine addiction or rock stars on heroine. Not everybody who turns to drugs is a looser, and for some, drug use is of no consequence like admitted pot smokers Michale Phelps, Barack Obama and Willy Nelson.

Now excuse me, I'm going to go watch a Harold and Kumar movie.

  • Just do something...except drugs. Plain and simple.

  • What the hell is with all this hate?! Why do people act so offended when people have an opposing opinion on a movie; it's so fucking stupid! The minds of the people who watched these movies, whether he/she liked or hated it, will not change. All these insults aren't getting anybody anywhere! It's just a waste of time and it's mind-numbing! Holy hell! There is no reason for this! I love the Lion King, but I don't fault CM for hating it. Everybody has different standards in regards to film! STOP!!

  • I fault him for hating it.

  • Does it strike anybody else as hypocritical that Hollywood makes tons movies about how nothing is worth doing at all...and then makes movies complaining about people who don't do anything?

Lesson here. Movies make poor teachers when wielded by bitter people.

  • Don't do drugs. Just do something.

Heh, I never heard of that before.

  • if drug psa's said that it would be fine but no they have to exagerate

  • It's true that drug PSA's are almost necessarily manipulative, and this film was no exception. I simply give it credit for being manipulative in a semi-original way.

  • well atleast this one gives a reason for them to be on drugs, everyother drug psa i've seen at school or on tv try to scare me and that does happen in this flim but psa's on tv like the ones that are so insane that you couldnt help but laugh.

THIS WAS TRYING TO SCARE THE VIEWER BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY. if drug psa's were like this then most people wouldnt do drugs.

  • The words "ACTUALLYA WATCHA THE-A REVIEWA" come immediately to mind.

  • So...you're going to pass judgement on his review...before watching it...

Yeah, you'll forgive me if I don't take your Mario-accented logic too seriously, especially considering Matthew apparently thought this was a good movie.

  • Interestingly enough, I checked out your channel soon after the comment to see what you were into. Aside from the Metallica vids and Conan O'Brien, I'm not impressed. Even less now that you felt the need to spam it.

You were talking like him, so I made the comparison. No dissing of Mario, only comparing to him. Tool.

  • *shrug* Hey, you're a troll. I'm sure you've pissed off enough people to check out your page and chew you out for being such. It's the way of the world.

Enjoy lighting roaches in some ramshackle apartment listening to the White Album and making insane troll comments. I'm sure your three subscribers will be watching it all with rapt attention.

  • Says the man with a Mario map overlay on his background.

And I'm sure that you, with your pseudo-intellectual rambling and Lennon beard, are getting all kinds of chicks. Pity they're all probably bad photographer wannabes with more bottles of dye than IQ.

At least I'm honest about what I like. You're just a pseudo-intellectual poseur who thinks he's deep. Enjoy the Pineapple Express, pal.

  • *sigh*

    1. That's not a Mario overlay

    2. Even if it were, that's a lot less gay than Yu Gay oh.

    3. Don't be jealous of my beard. You'll be able to grow some fuzz in 8 years when your balls drop.

    4. I've never dated a photographer and atleat the last skin I got didn't come from a bucket of KFC.

    5. How am I not being honest? And what about my channel makes you think I am a poseur who "thinks" he's deep"? Is it because I have a bread? What is it?

    6. I don't smoke pot.

    7. Get a life, troll.

  • Whatever the overlay is, it's certainly not "cool" as you would define it.

I dunno, could be the whole NWO crap in your favs list, could be the trolling without actually watching the reviews, could be the random trashing of actually intelligent people.

*shrug* Doesn't matter to me in any case. If you're going to resort to these kinds of childish insults, then I really don't need to bother anymore.

  • Actually that's from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which most will agree is certainly awesome, sonny.

  • Well, you have good taste in game series, at least. It's not much, but it's something.

  • ...and music, and film, and television, etc...

Don't talk to me about good taste. You're a 21 year old who still like Pokemon. That fact alone makes me not take a single thing you say to me seriously.

  • So if I told you the sky was blue, you wouldn't believe it? XD

Seriously, drop the ego. I took the time to watch the review without going on a self-pimping tirade, and I certainly don't bitch at people to get pageviews.

I'm not impressed by you whoring yourself out. I don't think anyone is impressed by the trolling.

  • Well that's all fine and dandy, and judging by your little speech there I'd say that you are the one with the inflated ego, but I have just one question for you...

Did you "catch 'em all" yet?

  • That depends. Have you found the Reptoids yet?

  • ...Dammit, what the hell are we doing here? We're taking potshots at each other like fucking children. This isn't getting us anywhere.

Let's just stick to the facts: you wouldn't watch the review and trashed Matthew for not liking a movie that he liked, and I responded like a dick, as you did. What we like doesn't matter, and taking potshots is getting us nowhere.

  • But it makes for some great fun, doesn't it?

I'm glad you admitted that you're a dick. I forgive you.

  • I didn't admit to being a dick. I admitted to acting like one. There's a difference.

  • Apology accepted.

  • actually, your comments are the pure definition of a troll. shouting you'll unsubscribe if mathew doesn't live up to your expectations is not only a dick move but it also shows your inability to share an opinion. If you can't share an opinion then you can't function in society.Try sharing some thoughts instead of being a flip flopping subscriber. That kind of douchebaggery really is a terrible quality.

  • Pipe down you.

  • Lol... did you even watch the review? He thought it was a good movie...

  • He's not Italian, dude.

  • i looooooved this movie

  • stupid youtube reviews...Matthew's antidrug

  • Yup. The only thing I'm high on is YouTube ... and VIcodin ;)

  • ...Yeah I used to get high on youtube but I built up a tolerance

  • Great review,

Haven't seen it yet, but it sounds great

  • I remember someone once said that the happiness or sadness of a film's conclusion is not as important as if that ending feels real. I take it this effect is in full swing here; even if it's a sad, horrible conclusion, you still feel real emotion afterwards, which many consider the mark of great filmmaking.

  • i think i'll go see this now.. its got jennifer conneley :P

  • Yeah I saw saw a guys review on IMDB that had something similar to your view Bombastico and he said it was one of the most beautiful and devastating experiences he'd ever had watching a film. I think I can agree as well...great sound track too

  • this was a movie? i thought it was a song.,

  • But seriously though, this movie was awful...in a good way (if that makes any sense)

  • 3 words; ASS TO ASS

    XD XD XD
