@Momentimum No. Obviously you'll need to protect your arm if you feel your opponent start the armbar. If he goes for it, stack escape and use that to take top position. It's definitely something to be aware of, but as long as you're aware of your opponent's options, it makes it much easier to prepare for and defend them.
@TechniquePrevails True, being aware of techniques is half the battle in bjj. But most advanced artists won't give time to become aware of the sub attempt. So I suppose it's a matter of who does what first in this technique.

So should I find myself in a bad position, I need little adjustments like this one that help me get out. If I find myself underneath my opponent's side control- there's very little that I know of that can leave him "powerless."

Trumpet Dan has his analysis of Roger Gracie's mount attack, which puts the opponent in the same position you find yourself in. All the opponent has to do to avoid half guard is dive his knee straight down as if he was going to knee on belly.
If you can get that off in under 3 seconds in a tourney, your opponent won't get the 4 points anyway - even in that situation. I'd say it's ok in a tourney, especially if you are running out of options...any little thing helps!
