Although you play this song's distortion intro on 5th A octave slid to 7 then 6th octave slid to 7th and then slid up to 3rd then same thing but slid up to 5, this version sounds pretty awesome and I like it a heckuva lot more!

I can do the intro almost perfectly except for the verse, that part is kind of difficult but I almost got it. I wrote the tab down up to the first verse. Nice song though. The Death Magnetic album isn't really half bad as people say it is.

This sounds right to me. Even though I have seen other lessons where the same riff is played with octave chords on the bottom five strings. But I remember this is how Kirk plays it in the music video. He doesn't touch the lower strings in the shots of his fingers. The sound that makes it seem like an octave chord was probably the tone of an effect from the amp. I have a cheap 100 dollar guitar that does the same thing from time to time when the volume in the amp is high.

For those who think that the second part of the tab is being played 'wrongly' in this video: the same notes can be played on different parts of the guitar. Just as an experiment, try playing the G string at the 7th fret, and then try playing the B string at the 3rd. Is your mind blown?

Metallica actually play that main riff before the verse using octaves starting on the 10th fret of the low E string. It actually goes (with octaves) 10th fret to the 12th to the 5th to 7th to the 3rd fret.
