I love the Genesis version. The story was so different from any other RPG I have played. I'm a bit pissed at the rarity of the Turbo Duo version, though. Working Designs was one of the greatest game developers of all time, right up there with Treasure in my book.
Just finally dusted off the Turbo Grafx-16/CD, Sega CD/Genesis, NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64 and Gameboy systems yesterday after 8 yrs. Games such as Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Lunar: The Silver Star are reason enough to wake up everyday for awesome journeys and nostalgic gameplay that takes you back to better days when gems like these really made an impression on us to look forward to plenty of good times. These titles are the foundation of memories that last forever and keep us playing.
I found some 15 or so dollar genesis versions for sale. although they are loose carts and with boxes they go for about 20 to 25 dollars so oh well. That's cheap in comparison to the $50 turbo duo version I found.
DUDE YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I Went to Full Sail University (where you train for the game industry) and out of all the students there NONE OF THEM had even heard of this game at all. In fact the only person who had played it was one lab instructor. I've only played the Genesis version but I watched the entire Turbografx version thanks to UnPlayedThing's "I Played a thing: Exile." Check it out if you haven't already. It also got me studying up on Muslim Assassins at a library. LONG LIVE XZR!!!
I just bought the Genesis version online, primarily because I heard about it here a while back.
Just bought a Genesis again actually, so I've been trying to find more obscure games I never got to play as a kid, and this seems like it'll fit the bill.
I've always wanted to play the Exile series but, I waited around to long to get it then, when I was about ready to place an order, Working Designs website had closed down for good.
That really hurt me but, luckily an emu friend surprised me by tossing in a burn of Exile in a trade a few years back.
However I haven't gotten to play it enough to decide if I want the original game but, what I have played of it is entertaining.
Exile was originally published by Nihon Telenet AKA Telenet Japan. TJ went bust and had its IP bought by SunSoft who just released Blaster Master on the Virtual Console with the assistance of Gaijinworks, the localization firm founded by Victor Ireland, former president of Working Designs.
I'd say there's a good chance of Exile being on the VC, if Nintendo don't screw things up.
You're free to spend $500 on one if you choose. The prices I listed were for Buy-It-Now/completed auctions that were current when I commented.
Ask any active member of the Turbo community, up until recently for the last year or two Exile and Cosmic Fantasy 2 have been selling new/sealed on eBay for $5 - $10. Some jackhole bought up all the Exiles and jacked up the price, but no one's buying them.
I don't think Exile came too the UK. I picked up the Genesis version (not the Sega Megadrive version - if there was one) that someone must have imported, at a car boot sale for a few pounds many years ago. It looks like quite a good game although I do find it challenging.
Great overview! I heard about these action RPGs on the Turbo CD that were translated by WD,and since then I've been looking all over the internet for info on them, only to find nothing on GameFAQs,nothing on RPGClassics,etc... Finally I stumble on this!
I have both exile games for the turbo duo, completed the first one, but cant get past a boss on the second. Really good games, never played the genesis version.
I bought exile wicked phenom for turbo duo wayyy back in the early 90s then put it in a chest in the closet where it sat over 10 years, then when i started getting back into collecting recently im sure glad i hung onto it all these years. i never played the other versions though.
I just got my first Turbo-CD off eBay and this was the first game I purchased. Not at all disappointed. Fantastic story, colorful graphics, and pretty good animation. I can't believe they upped the difficulty for the sequel because I am having one hell of a time with this version!
Same thing happened with me. I actually wrote to Working Designs to ask for help. I got a response from them suggesting I use the female character because her knives could attack from a distance. Too bad the knives went THROUGH the enemies. Definition of frustration. I really enjoyed the original, though.
As the Turbo Duo was a combination of both then its easier saying Turbo Duo game rather then saying turbo grafix or turbo grafix CD game, but in all honesty i do not know why he says it like that.
I have a "game genie" cart for my PAL megadrive that as far as I know works as a universal adapter , do you think that would be ok? thanks for your advice BTW
Exile was a very cool game. I remember playing it and beating it when I was a kid. The ending and story was kind of weird, but it is worth playing it. I played it on an emulator not too long ago and beat it in like 10 hours.
u live in canada right? cousin lives in Toronto. i was always curious how gaming culture and access of games were up there long ago. now u got internet so wutever but back in late 80s to late 90s
'back in the late 80s to late 90s" we had internet, computers, McDonald's, video games, Hooters, Television and everything you Americans had. No offense, but don't assume things.
this wasn't suppose to be an insult or anything my cousin lives there i know how its like. in fact i actually would like to live there instead of US if i could find a valid reason/job/citizenship etc.
no offense but do u get alot of crap from americans about canada or soemthing got u all self conscious?
also i rephrase my last comment i meant 80s and EARLY 90s. and thats why i said INTERNET because back then it was harder to find import games etc. using the net like u do now. geez man...
I first played Exile on the genesis, and it was pretty fun, and I liked it...and I still have it, I remember the ending bummed me out, but I since have tried the turbo duo version, really great over looked series...and long live working designs!
Another great review of an obscure series. I used to own Exile a long time ago and it was a pretty cool game.
I have to say that your reviews are my favorite here on Youtube because you seem to be interested in all the cool stuff I was into back in the good old early EGM and Gamefan days. I've always been fascinated with the PC Engine, and spent tons of cash buying import stuff. It's cool seeing your reviews of this obscure stuff. Keep up the good work!
I remember seeing it in the pages of an EGM... I thought it looked like a pretty cool Castlevania-ish kinda game. I loved the anime artwork, too. Unfortunately it wasn't on the SNES. Anyway, good overview of the series! Keep em coming
I had both Exile games and you're right the second Exile game is really hard. For the first stage you have to level gring for a couple of hours to get past the boss. I was actually able to finish Exile WP. Thanks for making this video. It brought back some great moments.
I know they didn't make the game per se, but along with translating it, they made it harder. Play the Japanese SNES version via emulator and compare it to the Sega CD North America version and you will see what I mean.
I never play the sfc version.Though i did for the,sega-cd only time i thought it was difficult was at the end boss.Btw hgc nice review on exile one of the TG16 best.
Really, I thought he was easy; I was expecting a pain in the ass battle, but I think I beat him on my 3rd try.
Most of the game was difficult because when you are hit, your only invincible for a milli-second, and if an enemy is on top of you, your pretty much dead. Yet, they're invincible for about 5 seconds.
I love the Genesis version. The story was so different from any other RPG I have played. I'm a bit pissed at the rarity of the Turbo Duo version, though. Working Designs was one of the greatest game developers of all time, right up there with Treasure in my book.

The Genesis graphics actually took a big hit in color and detail and looks noticeably worse than the Turbo version.
The Genesis version is also heavily censored, unlike the japanese Mega Drive and Turbo/PCE versions.
The PCE version has a fade-out glitch that WD corrected for Turbo-CD. They also added the parallax scrolling to WP.
Exile 1 for Turbo-CD goes for $10 or less brand new on eBay right now. Exile WP is actually only $70 - $80.

Just wondering, why do you always call Turbo Grafx 16/CD games, Turbo Duo games?
The Turbo Duo was just a Turbo Grafx 16and CD combo unit.
It would be like calling all Sega Genesis and Sega CD games either Sega CDX or JVC X'Eye games. (and Wondermega if you live in japan)
