Canadian Forces did not deploy at the same time as the US; we involved ourselves on a humanitarian level some time after. In fact our role is to provide security and peace for civilians, and aid workers...the taliban sometimes get in the way, so we respond...that is the extent of our mandate.

Peace keepers do not carry guns? How are they supposed to keep the peace? In fact peacekeepers must carry arms, as it would be foolish and idiotic to do otherwise. The role of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan is to help build and maintain a stable environment, until such time as the people of that country can do so themselves. We are pulling out in 2011, not the action of a country who wishes to occupy. Canada is involved in active combat, but this is not our primary function.
