if you have a pc versian you need to go to scenario creator and add units before beginning the scenario.

Nope. No create scenario button on PS2 version. Hell, even the multiplayer game won't play.

I have aoe2 on the PC, and whenever i try doing large armies, it lags on me. Haha i dont think the game is meant for huge armies, but more strategy and tactics. I decided if i ever want to play with huge armies, id play the Battle for Middle Earth. If i want to play more strategy i play aoe.
