I recently discovered 'King Crimson' and in my quest to find similar artists i was recomended 'Manavishnu Orcestra'. This is just the second track of theirs i've heard so far after 'Birds of Fire'; and I must say, if the rest of the album is as good as these two songs, I will be buying this album asap!
I'd recommend everything by Floyd (pink floyd), Gilmour is one of the best guitarists in the world, along with Mclaughlin, but yeah Pink Floyd is too good of a band to categorize as progressive. But then again if you know Crimson you most likely know everything about Pink Floyd.
Gentle Giant-Three Friends
Gong is a good band
Frank Zappa-Freak Out (Is not similar to King Crimson though)
this is such and awesome track, love it, chilling on it now, nice buzz, good groove, doesn't get better.. Just checked this really awesome track from a new acid jazz guy.. This is a must hear,, truly. search on " Pai Crowd, Jamie Ruben " you are going to dig that for sure!
@victorgregson1973 Come on, man... I'm glad you like it but, really... come on. Nothing like the dynamic found here. Nothing. You're comparing a 50,000 volt powerline to a 12 volt battery. Ruben's stuff is okay and I'll peek in to see what he's doing in the future, but don't jerk people around with "this is a must hear" malarkey... I feel I was duped and that kind of p's me off.
i read a that critic called this album "arty and mystic." its too bad that we couldnt have just enjoyed the orchestra with out analyzing every freaking note they played. they were with us such a short time....
@skifiles -- Cobham is listed as the percussionist on the Birds of Fire album -- I thought Narada Michael Walden didn't join MO until the Apocalypse album, no?
Thank you for this posting, a wonderful mix of Jazz and Funk & Rock, something that is missed in todays music industry, but because of people like you, it will carry on.
It's usually the lead singer or lead guitarist everyone seems to dig, here we have the superlative Jon McGlaughlin, truly gifted, and only because of his gift can this music exist... but most of the youtube comments on this album don't mention him too much but it's all about Billy. I thought drummers were supposed to stay in the background, or is it sometimes that they're the Real Stars......???
@eddievelasco Yeah. Most of the chops-heavy drummers playing the super-complex stuff end up sacrificing their beast instincts (if they ever had them), but not Billy! I say this, by the way, as the world's biggest fan of Zappa drummer Aynsley Dunbar, whose nickname was "The Beast".
this is a true masterpiece and I totally agree that Cobham just drive the syncopation, the funk and the shear power of this monster of a song. I have heard some jaw dropping versions of this song, but it's beautiful thing to hear the quieter ambience.
ATTENTION UKULELE players, get off your ass and start playing some Jerry Goodman, four string plucking blues!
tribe called quest-same ol thing (if anyone likes hip hop here and wants to hear it sampled)

This one is dedicated to Miles Davis, and it really shows.
Despite being a guitarist, Jan Hammer is probably my favourite part of this track. That Rhodes just works perfectly.

Cobhams drumming especially though the solo section just cements his place in the top notches of drumming mastery

That is some funky, soulful violin (pizzicato) playing from Jerry Goodman. Cobham really drives the song. Jam Hammer is a monster keyboard player...
