Hahahahahahahahah....have to agree very much with "Willbarbero". I have a tough time following Buck Owens. Hahahahahahahahahahaah, but I still love to listen to a Guitarist like Bireli.
Watch Birelli gauging his volume, tweeks his control, and then keeps looking toward the sound engineer until he gets the control he wants. Nice to see Birelli in earlier days when he was a bit more of a normal size. When I first saw him in '85 he was a slim spotty teen-ager... and even at that age a wonder to behold!
lol yup. I can tell its a sweep of course but he hammers more notes on the top two strings i think, It almost sounds like he sweeps twice or something. Like when Mario goes down a tunnel :)
yea but he is bireli so its not really like any sort of fancy lick or pre planned thing, he prlly just was trying to play a lot of conveniently located notes really fast lol
its just the same changes. the head is obviously completely different. but what im getting at is that its nothing new to take standard changes and write new heads for them. look at how high the moon and ornithology. same changes, different tune. same goes with rhythmn changes, blues changes. just because its the same chord progression does not in any way make it the exact same some. id say this sounded quite different from cherokee.
however i agree with you that it was a smokin performance
For BobiusBrown your comment shows your ignorance to music and jazz in general. Anyone that has heard Benson play straight ahead bop can tell that Mr. Bireli has studied his playing in his earlier days and just took that to another level with a blend of his own style. Observe before you make a comment.
I'm more amazed by the bassist than i am by the great bireli in this one; don't get me wrong, he is awesome, but damn, that bassist is walking the hell of out that bass.
there is a lot of benson here in this solo. George can play like this as well. It also sounds like the tune is based on a song called Cherokee.. the changes sound the same..
no sorry a lot of those lines are benson lines. there are very specific licks that are benson licks. That solo is so benson inspired it is not funny. Listen to videos on you tube of benson playing and then give this one a real good listen again.
of course. Benson is one of the guitar players that you have to absorb from if you want to play. the others (for me) would be Pat Martino and Wes Montgomery for that straight ahead thing. For most other stuff I like McLaughlin because of his composition and his forward thinking on styles and not getting caught into just being this kind of player or that kind of player.
I play guitar, but I generally get my jazz lines from Oscar Peterson or the Marsalis guys or Bird or someone like that... I've only recently started listening to the guitar greats for direct assimilation into the language.
I stopped listening to guitar players years ago as they all started to sound the same. I listen to Ravel, Stravinsky, Rachmoninoff, Barber, Rimsky Korsakov.. when I listen to "jazz" it is more contemporary these days, people like George Duke and others who put a funk spin on the music. to me the ding a ding jazz is dying.
Hey does anyone know what is it he does at 2:20? I've seen him do that in many videos...he does it in the Sylvain Luc duet....sounds like a 7#5 just going up chromatically..?
I am probably not entirely accurate with my interpretation, but I think it's four strike cycle that moves around with him playing (in this case) first A, then simultaneously E, A and C# (A major that is), then F# and A. Then he moves that structure to different position, usually minor third down, then one half step up, then minor third down varying the jumps a bit. It's also rhythmically transformed so that the notes don't follow the straight tune beat, but is actually polyrhythmic.
It's amusing how fellow guitarists can discuss Bireli and other greats when most can't probably play the riff to Smoke on the water properly !!!
Before you can judge guys like Lagrene, go and learn to do what he does and then you can come back and talk about it. It might take you the best part of 20 years and still not get even close. That's in my experience :)
