Here's my idea. They are broke up.Digging thru the trash-he is pondering the past. She is on a string because her heart is still attached to him. There are flower petals floating around because she is pregnant and the process is churning but not by him. He leads her around like a puppy on a string. The children break her image signifying that she finds out about the pregnancy and his view of her changes now that things are more complicated and she is silent which says to me that she moves on.
