both are great games it was extremely difficult for me to leave world of warcraft to play everquest2. to me i like everquest 2 better however world of warcraft is still an amazing game.

I played EverQuest upon it's first release in '99 and began playing EQ2 about 2 yrs ago. I tried WoW and didn't enjoy it much. It is also listed about 24-25 spots below EQ2 as far as popularity on MMORPG.com. I also tried Rift, played it for about a week but couldn't stand the gameplay much. The graphics are beautiful but the gameplay couldn't keep my attention. Not to mention the first day I played Rift, I played for hours without seeing a single player. Prefer EQ2's complexity and gameplay
@banannasticker - I played Rifts Open Beta, and two weeks after released, then I quit. Was lacking something. Rift on steam hit a peak of a mere 927. Majority of the servers are population of low in NA and all low in Europe. With only one High populated server in NA.
Beautiful graphics, just lacking gameplay quality. Obviously I am not the only one who feels the same. Just another failed mmo as I previous stated.
Actually, contradictory to what everyone says, EQ2 is a good game, but WoW is better, not 'story-wise', or 'quest-wise', but 'player-wise'. WoW isn't really known for being a great game, it's known for having a TON of players and an addicting quality. The WoW community tends to be really nice and welcoming and the small community that Everyquest still has doesn't really cut it for most people.
@doraff02 but I want to point out one thing. Without EQ2's predecessor Everquest (Yes the original one), WoW wouldn't exist. It was Everquest that brought the idea of a 3D Online MMO. Which then WoW was based off of.
@doraff02 Meridian 59 would beg to differ. All the concepts have been around for ages, look into "MUDs", which were text based but focused on masses of people on one server, leveling skills etc.
I tried to convert some WoW friends to eq2 and they all said eq2 was too complicated and detailed. Proves that WoW is for simple minded kiddies. I've played both. Eq2 wins hands down. And the graphics? Don't get me started. I'm sorry if your dell can't push eq2.

both lost something from the OG titles EQ and EQOA, i log into wow or eq2 and it's all about solo play! I had guilds yes but everyone is raiding and shit. Or running instances wtf happened to a group of like minded people just wandering the world map for new places to camp? Where is the adventure? I can certainly agree with this. In the original EQ long ago, when you died, you had to travel from your bind spot (naked with no gear since it was still on yer corpse), get a rez or have someone drag yer body to the nearest zone edge (couldn't drag across zones). It sucked but it was fun! Not to mention you lost XP upon death and even levels at times. You didn't have a telport or travel system to get you to every single place either, sometimes you just have to hoof it. Fun fun

raids can take days in eq2 you are allowed to leave the zone and re-enter it the next night (most are 6 day timer can be reset after 2 days iirc)
I have not played wow so can't compare but I have no reason to try it cause I am already playing the best game i have ever played =p. plus corpse runs were removed like 5 years ago in eq2...
What I just really luv about WoW is the PvP. There are just wise players that use there skills and talent trees wisely, its not just u put easily the points to this and that in the talent tree, but every point is important. Plus shots rotation or techniques to use against different classes. Well graphic-wise, WoW is above than many MMOs, and compared to EQ2 depends on u. Plus i play warcraft before,. Yes there are some jerk players, there are also cool. For now, i wanna try else, lyk GW2 :)
First off, eq2 was never marketed like wow was/is. thats the ONLY aspect that wow trumps eq2 is the fact it was/is heavily marketed.Any person can run wow on a 5 year old pc on max settings and the game mechanics of are simplistic, making for a quick study and an easy learn.You have a global reuse in wow and also a very limited amount of abilities that you use.Very carebear.You want a challenge and outstanding graphics that STILL to this day rival games like rift? Eq2 never be as popular as wow and according to it's popularity it is better(at least more player think that wow is better).You dont have to agree but that is the fact.You can make thousand of videos that will NOT change the fact.Maybe if eq would have some working private servers like wow then it could be more popular.
As I recall, EQ2 and WoW used to have a similar sized player base. WoW was slightly larger as it was a little cheaper to play and could run easier on most computers. Then one day South Park aired an episode featuring WoW. Granted, it is one of my favorite episodes. Blizzard then started an extensive tv ad campaign which blew EQ2 out of the water. If Sony had similar advertising sense, I think they would be equally as popular to this day.
@yooley they don't need it, anyone who plays EQII never leaves for another MMO, I tried several others including Rift (which was fun) and obviously WoW. ultimately I went back to EQII: but for me, it's mostly how they handle rogues.
I could go on and on, but one last thing. WoW ain't got no shinies.
A very devilish little scheme EQ2 had from the very beginning. Shinies are little yellow or white (depending on your color settings) lights you find wandering the zones in EQ2. If you click on one, you bend down and harvest a collectable. There are hundreds of collections, my primary toon has discovered over 300 different collections and has completed about half. If you complete a collection, you turn it in for a reward
Does WoW have snowballs that you can actually throw at other players? Blizzards of snowball fights often occur in frostfell wonderland around christmas time. You can also keep a store of snowballs and toss them at people out of season. A lady friend of mine always chucked a snowball my way just as I would log out...it was a running joke. She kept stacks of them just for that reason.
Here's something you can never do in WoW. I was in the middle of a battle during a raid once. I ran out of power, so I went to click on my hex doll (a click item that doesn't use power). I missed the hex doll button and hit my snowball button by mistake. Since I was targeting via the main tank the snowball hit her instead of the target. As soon as the battle was over, she turns to me and says "was that a snowballllll???? that hit me in the middle of that fight?"
As for game features I will take EQ2 over WoW any day of the week. Lets list a few.
In EQ2 you have a place you can call home. A house or room that you can sit back and realax in. You can entertain friends, show off your trophies or just play with your house pets. You can also use your house or room as a store to sell things from while you are offline or just out adventuring. In WoW, you are basically a homeless wanderer or loitering on a street corner.
So yes, I got a pretty poor representation of the player base.
As for kids on EQ2, we had a few in our guild. As guild leader, I would assign somebody to buddy with the youngster unless there was a person their own age they found to pal up with. We always made it clear that politeness was the rule of the day when talking in open chat. But in EQ2 even, the PvP server I played on was more brutal language wise, but nowhere near as bad as my experience playing WoW.
I guess I just tried WoW at the wrong time then maybe. I played it 6 months. I don't remember the name of the server, but every 5 seconds or so I would get a duel invite and harrassment if I refused. How do you make a tag that just says "leave me alone, I'm trying to get my tradeskills up"? You couldn't talk in general chat as anything you typed immediatly scrolled out of view from all the smack banter going on. If you asked a question the banter changed to everyone calling you a noob.
@FamousWolfe WoW is fine its a good game, but i think people make fun of it cause so many little kids play it. Im 16 and ive never heard of anyone in Everquest 2 younger than that, my whole guild is 30+
Having played WOW for this past year and a relative newcomer to mmorpgs, I have to say there are things I liked about WOW, however there were things that I absolutely hated about it too, such as the long arduous quests. I'm looking to give EQ2 a fair shot, I'm currently subscribed to Rifts and thoroughly enjoying that one. Also can't wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic...
I've played wow for years. Love the game but got bored with it I thought about playing Everquest but not sure if i could go get use to the graphics. I could definitely use a more mature audience though. Damn elementary brats spamming up trade chat with ignorant crap.
Here ya go. I tried both. If you are a punk who likes to talk smack with other smack talking punks go play WoW. You'd get kicked from any EQ2 server in less than an hour. Or at least the entire sever would have you on ignore. If you are a serious RPG player, EQ2 though smaller has a much much more mature and friendly player base.

@yooley I've never had a problem w/ the other players on WOW, most people are helpful & friendly if you approach them with manners. Also seeing as WOW has the largest subscriber base I would think they have plenty of "serious RPG players" unfortunate you never actually met any. But if EQ2 is more your thing, hey by all means let WOW lovers be WOW lovers, you can keep playing EQ2 nothing wrong w/ that.
This was well put together IMO. You really showcase some of the great features from both games. I suppose I just don't see why people love WOW so much. I have played both extensively but WOW left me wanting more. The game play isn't as in-depth, the graphics are seriously lacking considering WOW being a newer game,and aside from extensive advertisement campaigns, EQ2 has done it first, and done it better. Still, EQ is struggling, WOW is flourishing. Remaining live servers are proof of such.

@CiX109 I have played them both. They are both very repetitive boring games made purely for people who find addiction in that sort of thing. They both also cost money, not only to buy, but also then to play each month. (oh, and wow is a “ripoff” of eq1)
@CiX109 WoW copied Everquest I and altered it, and Everquest in turn took lots of inspiration from Ultima Online but in 3D. The story in a nutshell. However, EQ2 is also pay per month unless you play on the free EQ2 Extended servers, but they are worthless as you need to unlock everything fun by buying it. But if you play the normal EQ 2 game, it is definitely worth the low monthly fee. I played WoW for 5 months and got bored, but have played EQ2 for a year now :)

1. Both games have decent graphics...I played on a shitty system and still got great results. On a high-end gaming PC either game would rock!

having never played eq I can't say very much, it looks awesome though. Actually. WoW is more popular due to marketing alone. Period. SoE has virtually NO marketing to speak of for EQ2, which is a shame. The game is bigger, prettier, and more diverse than WoW, but SoE are utter morons and greedy fuckers that are too concerned with shoving micros in our faces than advertising their game. However, on the flip side, WoW lore is not unoriginal at all. So eh. I like both, I like EQ2 better, but I like Blizz better than SoE. Go figure :P

I've been playing EQ2 for 6 years and I've seen almost no marketing done for the game whatsoever, yet you cannot swing a dead gnome without smacking into something WoW related. Marketing is smart. Marketing gets you players, and players get you more money. Blizz has other games too, but you don't see them sitting around like dumbfucks, do you?
@DragonHunter totally full of shit my friend i play on Dell with far more power than needed for eq2 and 22 inch flat wide screen the game looks Awesome like a frigging movie running almost . if you don't get the full look of eq2 it's not the games fault it's your pc or you have no idea how to set the game for it's best look . page on tentonhammer tells you what every setting does and how to have no lag in game raids and still get a great looking game on screen .
@jimischild13 Idk what comment you're replying too, but anything to do with graphics I always say every game has its own style of graphics. Would you compare the graphics in Maplestory to EQ2? Would you compare Starcraft to plants vs zombies? No.. because they have completely different styles. Just like EQ and WoW have completely different styles.
However I'd like to point out at this point Cataclysm made WoW hella boring and I'm now screwin around with casual games (Dragonica is amazing f2p)

@DragonHunterX Dont bother. Vindictus is good for about 2 days then gets repetive. Its small and classes are like 3 so everyone looks the same. The grabbing of MOBS and throwing them around was fun....for a bit. Everything is instance. No mounts and non stop spamming of people selling game stuff for RL money.....sigh...Servers- - Ultra laggy unless your doing an instance. Wait for GW 2 or SWTOR or even DC universe mebbe Diablo 3 bro......
I love wows battlegrounds, and the fact that the game has chapters n its storyline (burning crusade, lich king, now cataclysm) But I much rather explore Norrath, then Azeroth. I play both games, both are great games. Give the arguing over games a rest. sheesh.
I played DnD up to 3.5 tabletop, EQ, EQ2, and WoW. I was in a raiding guild on Proudmoore and had 5 kingslayers. If you must use gearscore, they were all 5800 and up. WoW is fun. I had wonderful experiences in WoW. But the truth is, WoW is a watered down copy of everquest. Look at the facts. Where do you think all the classes in WoW came from? Or hotbar interface? Do a little research and educate yourself on the history of tabletop DnD to pcMMO. Cheers.

@banannasticker - I played Rifts Open Beta, and two weeks after released, then I quit. Was lacking something. Rift on steam hit a peak of a mere 927. Majority of the servers are population of low in NA and all low in Europe. With only one High populated server in NA.
Beautiful graphics, just lacking gameplay quality. Obviously I am not the only one who feels the same. Just another failed mmo as I previous stated.

Actually, contradictory to what everyone says, EQ2 is a good game, but WoW is better, not 'story-wise', or 'quest-wise', but 'player-wise'. WoW isn't really known for being a great game, it's known for having a TON of players and an addicting quality. The WoW community tends to be really nice and welcoming and the small community that Everyquest still has doesn't really cut it for most people.

Or running instances wtf happened to a group of like minded people just wandering the world map for new places to camp? Where is the adventure? I can certainly agree with this. In the original EQ long ago, when you died, you had to travel from your bind spot (naked with no gear since it was still on yer corpse), get a rez or have someone drag yer body to the nearest zone edge (couldn't drag across zones). It sucked but it was fun! Not to mention you lost XP upon death and even levels at times. You didn't have a telport or travel system to get you to every single place either, sometimes you just have to hoof it. Fun fun

raids can take days in eq2 you are allowed to leave the zone and re-enter it the next night (most are 6 day timer can be reset after 2 days iirc)

What I just really luv about WoW is the PvP. There are just wise players that use there skills and talent trees wisely, its not just u put easily the points to this and that in the talent tree, but every point is important. Plus shots rotation or techniques to use against different classes. Well graphic-wise, WoW is above than many MMOs, and compared to EQ2 depends on u. Plus i play warcraft before,. Yes there are some jerk players, there are also cool. For now, i wanna try else, lyk GW2 :)

As I recall, EQ2 and WoW used to have a similar sized player base. WoW was slightly larger as it was a little cheaper to play and could run easier on most computers. Then one day South Park aired an episode featuring WoW. Granted, it is one of my favorite episodes. Blizzard then started an extensive tv ad campaign which blew EQ2 out of the water. If Sony had similar advertising sense, I think they would be equally as popular to this day.

A very devilish little scheme EQ2 had from the very beginning. Shinies are little yellow or white (depending on your color settings) lights you find wandering the zones in EQ2. If you click on one, you bend down and harvest a collectable. There are hundreds of collections, my primary toon has discovered over 300 different collections and has completed about half. If you complete a collection, you turn it in for a reward

Does WoW have snowballs that you can actually throw at other players? Blizzards of snowball fights often occur in frostfell wonderland around christmas time. You can also keep a store of snowballs and toss them at people out of season. A lady friend of mine always chucked a snowball my way just as I would log out...it was a running joke. She kept stacks of them just for that reason.

Here's something you can never do in WoW. I was in the middle of a battle during a raid once. I ran out of power, so I went to click on my hex doll (a click item that doesn't use power). I missed the hex doll button and hit my snowball button by mistake. Since I was targeting via the main tank the snowball hit her instead of the target. As soon as the battle was over, she turns to me and says "was that a snowballllll???? that hit me in the middle of that fight?"

As for game features I will take EQ2 over WoW any day of the week. Lets list a few.
In EQ2 you have a place you can call home. A house or room that you can sit back and realax in. You can entertain friends, show off your trophies or just play with your house pets. You can also use your house or room as a store to sell things from while you are offline or just out adventuring. In WoW, you are basically a homeless wanderer or loitering on a street corner.

So yes, I got a pretty poor representation of the player base.
As for kids on EQ2, we had a few in our guild. As guild leader, I would assign somebody to buddy with the youngster unless there was a person their own age they found to pal up with. We always made it clear that politeness was the rule of the day when talking in open chat. But in EQ2 even, the PvP server I played on was more brutal language wise, but nowhere near as bad as my experience playing WoW.

I guess I just tried WoW at the wrong time then maybe. I played it 6 months. I don't remember the name of the server, but every 5 seconds or so I would get a duel invite and harrassment if I refused. How do you make a tag that just says "leave me alone, I'm trying to get my tradeskills up"? You couldn't talk in general chat as anything you typed immediatly scrolled out of view from all the smack banter going on. If you asked a question the banter changed to everyone calling you a noob.

Here ya go. I tried both. If you are a punk who likes to talk smack with other smack talking punks go play WoW. You'd get kicked from any EQ2 server in less than an hour. Or at least the entire sever would have you on ignore. If you are a serious RPG player, EQ2 though smaller has a much much more mature and friendly player base.

This was well put together IMO. You really showcase some of the great features from both games. I suppose I just don't see why people love WOW so much. I have played both extensively but WOW left me wanting more. The game play isn't as in-depth, the graphics are seriously lacking considering WOW being a newer game,and aside from extensive advertisement campaigns, EQ2 has done it first, and done it better. Still, EQ is struggling, WOW is flourishing. Remaining live servers are proof of such.

@CiX109 WoW copied Everquest I and altered it, and Everquest in turn took lots of inspiration from Ultima Online but in 3D. The story in a nutshell. However, EQ2 is also pay per month unless you play on the free EQ2 Extended servers, but they are worthless as you need to unlock everything fun by buying it. But if you play the normal EQ 2 game, it is definitely worth the low monthly fee. I played WoW for 5 months and got bored, but have played EQ2 for a year now :)

Actually. WoW is more popular due to marketing alone. Period. SoE has virtually NO marketing to speak of for EQ2, which is a shame. The game is bigger, prettier, and more diverse than WoW, but SoE are utter morons and greedy fuckers that are too concerned with shoving micros in our faces than advertising their game. However, on the flip side, WoW lore is not unoriginal at all. So eh. I like both, I like EQ2 better, but I like Blizz better than SoE. Go figure :P

Would you compare Starcraft to plants vs zombies? No.. because they have completely different styles. Just like EQ and WoW have completely different styles.
However I'd like to point out at this point Cataclysm made WoW hella boring and I'm now screwin around with casual games (Dragonica is amazing f2p)

@DragonHunterX aww thats not my idea of a rpg Dragonica but ok if that pleases you good . Vindictus or Redquiem are more fit to my taste far as free rpg's go. if i wont different than eq2 i go for bloody hack and slash takes me back to my old xbox playing Enclave or Gladiator .

@DragonHunterX Dont bother. Vindictus is good for about 2 days then gets repetive. Its small and classes are like 3 so everyone looks the same. The grabbing of MOBS and throwing them around was fun....for a bit. Everything is instance. No mounts and non stop spamming of people selling game stuff for RL money.....sigh...Servers- - Ultra laggy unless your doing an instance. Wait for GW 2 or SWTOR or even DC universe mebbe Diablo 3 bro......

I love wows battlegrounds, and the fact that the game has chapters n its storyline (burning crusade, lich king, now cataclysm) But I much rather explore Norrath, then Azeroth. I play both games, both are great games. Give the arguing over games a rest. sheesh.

I played DnD up to 3.5 tabletop, EQ, EQ2, and WoW. I was in a raiding guild on Proudmoore and had 5 kingslayers. If you must use gearscore, they were all 5800 and up. WoW is fun. I had wonderful experiences in WoW. But the truth is, WoW is a watered down copy of everquest. Look at the facts. Where do you think all the classes in WoW came from? Or hotbar interface? Do a little research and educate yourself on the history of tabletop DnD to pcMMO. Cheers.

The "facts" are that WoW has a fraction of the content /classes/skills/lore etc than other games, and a very childish and greedy playerbase. If "better" for you is repetitive spamming of the same skills over and over in a never ending dangling carrot environment then more power to you. I had some good times of companionship with other players before the game became super easy with WOTLK,

It doesn't matter if a billion people play WoW and 5 people play EQ. The FACT is the entire content of WoW is one grain of sand in the EQ universe. I was a very dedicated WoW player for years man. I had great times with it. But the FACT is that it is a puny game with no content and minimal choices.

@Evological I still find it funny that you think your opinion is automatically fact because you believe it. My opinion is that WoW is better because I like playing it more. I tried Everquest 2, but i prefer WoW, like many others. That's the point I was trying to make, that more people prefer WoW. By the way the Lore of WoW is anything but unoriginal.
In the end the fact is that it doesn't matter what you think, or what I think since its purely opinion.

It is a fact. What you are describing is YOU like EQ better because it has more variety in a few aspects. I prefer how WoW does the classes/profs that they have.

The huge amount of people that play wow only proves that Blizzard has better marketing. And that's it! WoW being scrawny is a fact when it's compared to other games. It is repetitive in that almost every quest is a variation of "go get me 10 foozles. Now go get me 10 fizzles..." It is unoriginal because it shamelessly copies DnD and Everquest. This is empirical data, not my opinion. My opinion would be something like, "WoW sucks" or "WoW is better." Self educate plz :)

BUT. WoW is a lot better for gameplay. EQ2 just has the graphics.
EQ raids are boring as fuck, same old stuff as the orignal.

@JYates1997 If it were a milliion times better then no computer known to man would be able to play it. The graphics would force you to turn away or you would be lost in the immerse grasp. It would claim not only your jobs but your entire soul. While everquest 1 dead the second part... the claiming of the soul everquest 2 was kind of a disappointment... not even close to WoW... I loved the first everquest so much but the second just seems... boring and unimaginative..
