My brother goes to Lympstone next month, March '11 to start Commando training. I am joining the Parachute Regiment. I'm pretty sure Royal Marines are more difficult to get into. If you got the balls apply, both are hard.

im doina millitary fittnis course called impact to help me get to the standard of getting into the marines . dont have to be a superman to apply bollocks royal marine standards are proper high . on this course iv been to many army things and as soon as i say i wanna be a marine i instantly get evils lol
and us brits would still kick ur arses!.. think about it we have the best trained soldiers in the world so in a war we'd win hands down because u cant send all your troops to 1 place at once. The regular British Army basic infantry training is 26 weeks plus continuous training once you join ur regiment and the USMC training is 13 weeks plus continuous training. No disrespect though and maximum respet!.

They are more secretive too and have been able to stretch their legs in afghanistan. It is known that in special forces selection the SBS and the SAS go through the same phases however when the SAS get their beret the SBS carry on, doing things like underwater demolitions and endurance swimming.

Yeh before I signed up I was in the army cadets. It did help me learn parade and basic knowledge of navigation and radio stuff. But mentally andphysically you have to be prepared. those are the hardest parts. Joining the Marines was the best choice of my life, good luck lad.

@samtyler1988 anyone can run that distance in that time, its piss easy, basic fitness. but not many people at all can go through the shit you get in training, and you get alot of shit, and its given just to make you quit. no1 could crack the commando tests with the level of fatigue the recruits have. out of the 56 that started training with me, only 15 of us made it.

PARAs got chosen to be SFSG simply because they are running out of roles for them to do and there was a real danger of them being disbanded. The Royal Marines are a far more capable force because they have the infrastructure and support to be self-sufficient... and are now seen by the MOD as THE main frontline troops for the UK. Not knocking PARAs at all here, but this is all plain fact. BTW bootnecks can also be drafted to SFSG. And the SBS are the real shocktroops of SF. Facts.

a regiment cant be a unit because in a regiment you get battalion`s and platoon`s that Can be called units but not the regiment because you get units within like in a reg you get like 1 troop to 9 troop there the units within
I understand what you mean but A full battle group could be classed as one unit. and within that battle group there are many different Regiments. a Unit is a group, a regiment is a group of battalion, so its still a unit..

i think but the ritish armmy dont use side arms that much, beacause are rifles are cut down and ccompact. not like the m16 which is bulky and long. the only regiment that uses sidearms on a regular basis is the SAS. because their special forces which puts them in more dangerous places and because the also use the
no, most of the boys are getting issused side arms when they go to afghan just because some of the contacts are so close the pistol is easier to manouvere at close range. Side arm traing has recently been introduced into RM training
The britsh army use side arms, but only when mounted on top of APC's on the 50 cal, becuase the SA80 would be to big to pull through the hatch if a target came to close to shoot it with the 50 cal, therefor a side arm is used becuase its compact and easy to pull out.
Wanted to join Royals in 1992. Passed POC, failed AIB - too head strong, too aggressive and too argumentative. Recommended I join Paras. Did and on leaving trained as a Barrister! LOL! Finest lads on earth in Paras and Royals.

all i can say is all catbadges do there bit. i can see theres arguements between paras and all other catbadges as usual. i only did 8 weeks training in p-coy. and flunked out with medical issues. but... some of the stuff i've seen and heard of what they do should earn an element of respect.....like back in the days they were travelling over marsh land and used there ankles as platforms to fire mortars at the enemy. each mortar braking there ankles into bits from which it was fired. only thing ill say is 60% of sas troops have servied in a para reg not 60% of paras become sas. people trying to make out paras are better then marines because alot go sas but if you look at it logically if your a para the next natural step is sas as your already para trained and are a skilled solider same with the marines and sbs its a natural step up because marines are already amphibious trained. AND if your goin off battle honours the rifles are the best.
the Rifles aren't 'Best' they may have more battle honours because they have been around for longer in some shape or form, but since world war two Para Reg and the Marines have been the go to units when Britain has needed fighting forces due to the harder and more skilled training the receive all the way through their careers, have worked with many other regiments, i.e. Rifles, Guards, Jocks and they are not a patch on the average Para Reg soldier, they would admit it themselves!

you're only 12. it's good to have aspirations. but trust me,these videos show nothing of the hardship you will have to endure to become a royal marines commando. its not like shooting a gun in a game. you rely on many different things. there is no god mode.
not trying to put you off, just saying that to become a royal marines commando, you have to be in the top 5% of all soldiers in great britian. that's the type of level required. I'm in the 42 commandos.

Yeh before I signed up I was in the army cadets. It did help me learn parade and basic knowledge of navigation and radio stuff. But mentally andphysically you have to be prepared. those are the hardest parts. Joining the Marines was the best choice of my life, good luck lad.

@laikhambrgr your in the 42 commandos... its very tough my friend who is one of the fittest and strongest men i know, literally runs 8 miles every morning and can bench 120kg with ease didnt make it in the 42 because he couldnt take the mental side of it... never the less he is now serving with reme going to afgan soon. so my hats off to you and all the british troops

@laikhambrgr nah dude you have to be in the top 5% to be in the sas or sbs. not quite that low for a royal marine. theres a lot of athletes out there who can run 1.5 miles in under 12 and a half and then another 1 in under 10 n half. just not every1 wants it as there career path. but yep if ur a marine ur the most elite soldier put on earth so respect.

@samtyler1988 anyone can run that distance in that time, its piss easy, basic fitness. but not many people at all can go through the shit you get in training, and you get alot of shit, and its given just to make you quit. no1 could crack the commando tests with the level of fatigue the recruits have. out of the 56 that started training with me, only 15 of us made it.

PARAs got chosen to be SFSG simply because they are running out of roles for them to do and there was a real danger of them being disbanded. The Royal Marines are a far more capable force because they have the infrastructure and support to be self-sufficient... and are now seen by the MOD as THE main frontline troops for the UK. Not knocking PARAs at all here, but this is all plain fact. BTW bootnecks can also be drafted to SFSG. And the SBS are the real shocktroops of SF. Facts.

With in 1 Regiment you have attached soldiers from R.E.M.E, Signals, Med Corp etc etc.
So Its more commonly known as a unit.

I understand what you mean but A full battle group could be classed as one unit. and within that battle group there are many different Regiments. a Unit is a group, a regiment is a group of battalion, so its still a unit..

i think but the ritish armmy dont use side arms that much, beacause are rifles are cut down and ccompact. not like the m16 which is bulky and long. the only regiment that uses sidearms on a regular basis is the SAS. because their special forces which puts them in more dangerous places and because the also use the
m16. that and other rifles :)

no, most of the boys are getting issused side arms when they go to afghan just because some of the contacts are so close the pistol is easier to manouvere at close range. Side arm traing has recently been introduced into RM training

The britsh army use side arms, but only when mounted on top of APC's on the 50 cal, becuase the SA80 would be to big to pull through the hatch if a target came to close to shoot it with the 50 cal, therefor a side arm is used becuase its compact and easy to pull out.

Wanted to join Royals in 1992. Passed POC, failed AIB - too head strong, too aggressive and too argumentative. Recommended I join Paras. Did and on leaving trained as a Barrister! LOL! Finest lads on earth in Paras and Royals.

all i can say is all catbadges do there bit. i can see theres arguements between paras and all other catbadges as usual. i only did 8 weeks training in p-coy. and flunked out with medical issues. but... some of the stuff i've seen and heard of what they do should earn an element of respect.....like back in the days they were travelling over marsh land and used there ankles as platforms to fire mortars at the enemy. each mortar braking there ankles into bits from which it was fired. only thing ill say is 60% of sas troops have servied in a para reg not 60% of paras become sas. people trying to make out paras are better then marines because alot go sas but if you look at it logically if your a para the next natural step is sas as your already para trained and are a skilled solider same with the marines and sbs its a natural step up because marines are already amphibious trained. AND if your goin off battle honours the rifles are the best.

the Rifles aren't 'Best' they may have more battle honours because they have been around for longer in some shape or form, but since world war two Para Reg and the Marines have been the go to units when Britain has needed fighting forces due to the harder and more skilled training the receive all the way through their careers, have worked with many other regiments, i.e. Rifles, Guards, Jocks and they are not a patch on the average Para Reg soldier, they would admit it themselves!
