Donald Byrd is a LIVING LEGEND. Perhaps one day, he will be spotlighted and showcased by BET or TV ONE. He's always been big in DC, so, perhaps the lady leader of TV One may give him his props on her show. At least a one-on-one interview would be a good thing for this cat. LIke Quincy, he's done all the decades, 40s to now -- and significantly, a major contributor. Hail to the Byrd. by teacawks@yahoo.com ... in Augusta, Georgia.
Think these are the words: Ahhh…The places and Spaces I’ve been (repeat), Well…The Places and Spaces I’ve been, Do so many things for all the life I’m living, Guys on the West side, who’re on the South side, All you have to do is East side. Bet-cha don’t lie, Guys who’re on the East coast, who’ve never seen the coast, People getting’ high…Hiii, Oooowhooohh!! (repeat), Done (or does) a lot of living, seen a lot of life, Takes a little while, then you’ll understand (repeat and fade)
Love this! Known about Bryd for a while but just recently getting SERIOUS about collecting his music. Just listened to album P&S. I will really like to get the lyrics to the tune Places & Spaces. I can understand some but want to know all the words. Anyone help me out!?
A brother in the Air Force turned me on to this back in 1976. Of course the Blackbyrds, Return to Forever, Weather Report and Ramsey Lewis followed. The jazz, R&B, Soul and even Rock & Roll had creativity. Wonder if that Golden/Silver/Bronze age of music will ever return. Guess we're now in the throes of the Copper age of music. Incredible post.
@drzmudee good for you... been dancing to this tune for years and have many Donald Byrd LP - go buy them all and while you are at it anything by Larry and (the late) Fonce Mizell who worked with him a lot :))
My senior year of high school, my father use to take me to school and play this song EVERY MORNING in the car on the way, this as our Morning Anthem Jam lol. It make me feel in a good mood too.
completely forgot about this side, so happy I found it my girlfriend use to listen to this contstantly, brings back happy memories when life was a little less hectic!!! shout out to Rockaway Park.
LA back in the in 70's at the park before the drive by shooting. All you can hear was this song jamimin while having your car wash.at Will Roger Park.
This song and the album it was on was considered a masterpiece then and still is. I have no idea why one person would dislike this incredible contribution to fusion jazz.
At age 55, I still get goose bumps when I listen to this CD.
@doc2skate You see the jewels in the doctor's music. These ain't simply words, lyrics. This here's truth, wisdom. Dr. Donald Byrd really has crossed a lot rivers, seen a lot of land. The brother is a true renaissance man, so accomplished in so many areas. His collaboration with the Mizells was a gift to humanity.
@roryrook Great catch there. "Crossed a lot of rivers, seen a lot of land" is actually what they're singing in that final fade. I need to get that stereo system featured in that car commercial. The sounds on this computer need some work.
@charlesawilliams The other backing musicians were Larry and Fonce Mizell, Harvey Mason, and Skip Scarborough to name the prominent ones. Fonce Mizell (along with Berry Gordy, Deke Richards, and Freddy Perrin) were called The Corporation, the quartet who penned many of the Jackson 5's early hits. Skip Scarborough collaborated a lot with EWF.

@MOREHOUSE80 They need to hear real music, I think I was in the 5th grade when this came out, my moms had alot of Donald Byrd's albums back in the day. I had my son listen to it too when he was little!!!
Brings back so many memories, the music, the people, the dance moves (when dancing was dancing), the sweaty night clubs, the happiness.... the places and spaces I've been!
This is probably the best of Donald Byrd's Music, It's a Master Piece! It's filled with Color and a beautiful Melody, so open & airy, You can close your eyes, and literally FLY..! An Artist can "Paint" to this Music...
aside from the fact this is some of the greatest music of the 70's the connections of the Donald Byrd band span decades and is musical heritage that culminated into the peak of american popular music and then decay into hip hop.
Eldorado rag top down, babe in the passenger seat, picnic basket in the back, Byrd in the deck, heck, bring the german sheperd too! Better put that basket in the trunk now.

As a young British backpacker in 87 travelling through the states, came across a fantastic record shop called groove merchants in Haight Ashbury San Fransisco who introduced me to the amazing Donald Byrd, talk about an epiphany, hope the record shop is still there, truly a music heaven
