so the extention of the apps have to be capital...and it has to be named a certain way like SNES.ELF instead of Super Nintendo.elf ??...and do you just add _BG or _COV behind the directory of the elf like the code of the game

Not really. But I would recommend having a mod chip for convenience .But only if you're willingly spending money on a soldering iron + solder to install the modchip. You'll also need a Philips screw driver to open up your PS2. The other way is to simply use an exploit(which also require money) in order to make your harddrive work.
