  • wow nice work man!

  • what clay are you using?

  • Whoa!!! very amazing!!!! I would like to learn on how to make those kind of stuff. thanks so much for sharing this video.

  • How many pounds of clay is that?

  • Slower isn't good.. More time allows your lubrication (water) to saturate the clay.. Faster. A pot this size shouldn't take more than 90 seconds..

  • @cravenoriginal 90 seconds for a 6lb pot....LOL !!! Do me a favour !

  • @kokaly15 when pulling up, try to push inward with your outer hand and bring it to a cone shape

  • Awe S Om. : ) (and it's nice to see you using plenty of water. Not really into the "dry" throwing techniques. )

  • Can someone help me? It seems when I try and make taller pieces of pottery, I'll start to pull up the clay, and once the pull gets to the top, my piece begins to get wider. I want to be able to bring the clay up straight and evenly before I start to make the shape.

  • @kokaly15 right so i have this horrible habit when i throw as well. it means that while pulling up your outside hand is higher than your inside. and u probably dont even realize ur doing it. you MUST keep ur fingertips (or knuckles if u used them) even as u go up. u just have to concentrate on keeping ur pressure even and ur fingers straight.

    Happy Throwing (:

  • Y is it off center?when I make my pieces they are not off center at the top.in this video the top is off.I some people like it like that because it shows it man made is that y?

  • @ceramicleaner Slower wheel maybe .... and really try to exaggerate the "narrowness" of your vase (because it will always be wider than want it) ? This guy obviously knows better than I. : O

  • Amazing. That's all I have to say. I know for a fact it takes slot of practice to get to that level. Can't wait till I can throw again. Keep up the good work.

  • Hi Dan, thank you for sharing.Great demonstration, as with other comments, you make it look so easy. Can I ask you what type of clay do you use,and what temperature did you fire the piece at? Any chance you could show us how you glaze your pots and what the finished pieces look like? Many thanks-Paul

  • you make it look so easy... if only it were!

  • hey, it seems that when i pull, at the top of the pull my hands sort of slips off the pot, making it uneven. any suggestions?

  • when i pull, it seems like my hand sorta slips as i get to the top of the pull, making the pot uneven. any suggestions?

  • How much clay are you using?/What kind?

  • I am having alot of trouble throwing walls i need to know a new technique. Have any ideas?

  • This is just stunning, amazing skill.

  • Oh my gosh, watching you is amazing o___o

I threw for the first time today in my ceramics class, you make it look so easy. I hope one day to be as amazing as you!!!

  • Hey Dan! I'm a Highschool student whos just started throwing in my cermics class when i stumbled upon your videos. You are a straight up boss! I have to ask though, how are you pulling the clay up straight up like at 2:00 in this video????

  • What type of clay is this?

  • dud is dan like over 6 feet tall?? cus im about 5' 11" and i cannot reach that far down into a large piece

  • dude is dan like over 6 feet tall?? lol!!

  • @trillfire I'm 6 feet and half an inch.LOL

  • best 6 minutes of my life

  • Yo Dan, I've got trouble bringing the clay up, and if I get it to the height it needs to be, I've still can't figure out how shape the cylinder without generating a wable which makes it ugly. Any suggestions?

  • Beautiful pots, great videos, thanks for the demos and inspiration!

  • How many pounds of clay did you use?

  • Ok tomorow i will attempt atleat a 10 incher. i have only been throwing for 2 weeks so i am a big rook but you have inspired me to go for it.

  • The pull at 1:45 is just ridiculous

  • Most excellent Asian lady **busizz4me.info**

  • you sir are a master, I have just taken an interest in ceramics my senior year of highschool. I love it. I am currently taking ceramics 1 and 2 meaning as im learning it i have to put it to creative use =P. I am applying for louisville art school soon and i need to get a portfolio together. The best way to do that is to pump out pieces on the wheel, I have had trouble but I am getting better. Anyways great video and beautiful technique.

  • This guy is strong.

  • Hi! Great video! Watching you doing it is such a pleasure. It seems so easy also, but when I'm trying to do it myself - it is not! haha. the tallest pot I ever made was 15 inch but i've spent almost an hour and it did cost me a lot of sweat to get there. Sometimes I'm really losing my patience, but after reading one of your comments I think I will go for it too. Greetings

    Joanna

  • amazing u r so talented

  • hi dan - great video - thanks. could i ask what sort of clay you are using, what weight you started off with and what your finished height was? cheers, azu

  • Hi Dan, you are an amazing potter. It all seems to happen so easily for you. What is the clay you are using? Earthenware or Stoneware?

  • Thank you so much for sharing, I've not seen anyone center like that before. I can't wait to give it a go!

  • how do you get even tops on your vases without cutting it?

  • hey' just asking, is it true that people who handle clay have hands that are really smooth? :x

  • so good i wanna be this good

  • Dan! i need your help!

As of late i've been throwing a lot taller pots but have trouble after they get past 12-13 inches high. Here are my problems

    1) after they get that high and i try to pull up the clay, no clay comes up! the bottom just stays as thick no matter how many times i try and pull up!

    2) my base gets thinner and thinner with every pull but stays the same thickness.

I need help any ideas on how to fix this problem??

  • @jonkasper9 Hi,I'm a bit confused.

If the base gets thinner then I'd have thought it would be getting taller.

Try using your knuckle to undercut the base and use this to lift.

Once you've done this 2-3 times you'll get the clay as tall as possible.

As I can't see what you're doing I can't really suggest anything else sorry.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • @youdanxxx Hey yeah i can't really see what im doing wrong either. But i will try and use my knuckle. And i guess i said wrong with my base, what i meant is that it gets smaller, of narrower i guess. The thickness stays the same but it just gets narrower.

  • @jonkasper9

be shure you are pushing out from the inside with enough pressure or try making a ring @ the bottem with your finger( that works the best for me)

  • I've been throwing for 15+ years and have come into my own nicely. Great videos and helpful to watch another potter with different throwing techniques. I don't do as much with big pots but got into bottles, platters, pitchers and some large sculptural teapots. Amazing to see such size with 5 lbs...and quickly.

  • Awesome work! I think you could take a course for that in college! If you can I definitely will! Thanx for the video!

  • ma człowiek talent :) tylko czemu taki smutny :)?

  • Comment removed

  • dude, you forgot the handle.

what kind of person does that!!??

  • as you expand the clay like that it gets dry, you def need that water

  • I don't believe you need that much water.

  • Nicely done friend!

Thanks for sharing your talent. You work wetter than I I I do but your results speak for themselves!

May you never get an air bubble!

    Dave

  • pretty gott play on words with the air bubble :)

  • you for got the handle

  • y would you put a handle on that?

    it would look ugly :/

  • yeah it would look pretty ugly

  • dude you're so good haha.

  • what type of wheel do you use??

  • i noticed you rarely use a rib, is there a reason for that?

  • great vid man. Do you have any tips on how to get more height out of single pulls? Because it takes you only a few pulls to get to your desired height. I can get the height, but it takes me so many pulls and so much time that by the time im done raising, the clay is weak and soft.

  • Try to use your knuckle on the outside and you can really lift up a lot at one time.

Be bold, just go for it !.

  • I enjoy how you center, so unique.. I use timseepots method of centering. Or rather, i use tsp's method for a quick, basic centered mound and then switch to your's to clear it up..

What I wanted to ask was what was the tallest vase you ever threw?

Oh, and how do you raise the clay with only your fingers? When i try, I always tear it ]: So, I use a sponge instead, but I want to find out how to at least do it with the finger method. Can you help me out?

  • When I raise it I'm using the pads of my fingers on the inside, and the middle knuckle of my index finger on the outside.

Just keep it really wet and practice with your knuckle and you'll be surprised how easy it is to do.

The tallest vase I've thrown is probably about 2ft 6" ,about as long as my arm.

    Cheers,Dan

  • Hi Dan... Great video. Please consider moving your camera so we can see your right hand as you throw... Thanks.

    Michael

  • You make it look so easy! I threw on the potters wheel for the first time to day and centering the clay was the hardest thing to do!!!!! after i centered it i was good to go, but....man, you make it look like a walk in the park lol

  • very well done, sir. I have been throwing for a while now, but i can't seem to succesfully make anything with more than 5/6 pounds of clay because when i do the pull it tends to bowl outwards and wobble on the top, and the base gets thick. any suggestions lol?

  • I'm only a sophmore in highschool, but these are some tips i could see would help the problem:

    go slower.

the clay could be too wet which makes it weak.

when you make the cylinder, pull from the bottom up constantly. before I start the cylinder I push in at the bottom, which makes it almost a mushroom-cloud shape, thick at the top, then I work it taller.

And GO SLOWER. :) that's the best advice I've gotten from y teacher. lol

  • I would suggest that to stop it bowling outwards 1st slow your wheel down and 2nd make sure you collar the top in before lifting like I do which helps to counteract the centrifugal force wanting to throw it out widely.

If you get a wobbly top then just use a needle to cut the uneven part off and carry on.

If you look at some of my other vids I get a wobbly top and do likewise.

So basically I'd slow down the wheel, collar the top before lifting and dont worry about the base being a bit thick.

  • thanks a lot man the tips are much appreciated

  • how many pounds or kg of clay is that and what type of clay?

  • About 5 lb of Stoneware clay.

  • thank you...your my inperation....il try to see

  • good work....i want to do desame but i dont have wheel....is that machine is expensive?

  • You should be able to pick a second hand one up pretty cheaply.

  • I've found that second hand wheels are actually hard to come by. Few and far between here in new england. Check out the Shimpo VL Lite. I bought 2 as student wheels and are a good deal (I think)

  • i have one of these also, it is a fantastic wheel and is better than the 1,000 dollar ones at my school

  • how much is one of those wheels?

  • 500-1000 dollars

  • How would you trim that pot with it bieng so tall and having a rim like that??

  • Because it's thrown on a bat I trim it next day like it is,not upside down like people who throw and cut off.

  • your god

  • even if i could make something that big, i would ruin it right at the end. "yes i'm done!!! let me just smooth out this one spot and the--- *flies off the wheel*... O_O"

  • i like the wheel you use mine its very quiet mine is NOISY it sounds like an airplane

  • holly crap you can pull like a beast! was that vase like super thin?

  • do you know how many pounds you started with?

  • roughly 5 lbs.

  • Sweet,amazing work dude.

  • Nice work...I know I couldn't throw such a huge vase...Props to UK pottery

  • i guess you wait till the pot is relatively dry to move it?

  • I throw the pots on bats so I can take the whole pot off the wheel on the bat as soon as I've thrown it and then turn or trim it the next day.

If you throw on a bat you can just take the pot off as soon as you've made it unlike folks who throw directly onto the wheel head and cut it off.

    Cheers,Dan

  • your work is beautiful. how long have you been throwing??
