Personally I prefer the Santana version of the song simply because it was the first version of this song I heard and I've always loved it and I'm used to it. But it doesn't really matter if you prefer the Zombies' or Santana's version - they're both great artists, done great versions and you can be sure that regardless of your preference you're one of the decreasing number of people in the world with a great music taste!
Jesus! In 1977, there was a Santana sighting?! Wow! Well, I like the effort they put in this attempt to equal The Zombies; Don't think they succeeded, but, at least this was a memo to people that Santana wasn't dead, and that was what was going on here.
@TheGranule Santana was not singing. Carlos Santana is a guitarist and his band is called Santana regardless of the line up. I think Greg Walker was singing on this version. There is a huge divide over which is the better version The Zombies or Santana, I guess for many it depends which version they grew up with. I think they are both great versions.
BESOS A TOD@S
Said this on another thread for this song, but Carlos Santana has really made this song his own, it's probably better than the original the guitar work on this is just brfilliant
They are two individual songs.. Friday night disco down in St Just ( lands end).same words...different makeup... but both truley Awsome... rock your socks off and nothin like it x
@webgeek6 Also Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of George Harrison's Taxman. If you've never heard it it's here give it a listen. I would say yes it's better than the original.

I love both versions, this one is a bit more smooth and mellow. The Zombies version we can all just jam out to it. They're both good.

@webgeek6 certainly not. It's imo 1 of the best (maybe the best) cover ever, but no one stands above the original of The Zombies!

one of the coolest guitar solos ever !!

If there was any cover that completely swallowed the original, this was it.
webgeek6 2 years ago 12
You're right! It's very rare for a cover of a well known hit song to surpass the original but in this case this pummels the original!
