Was just laughing at how disinterested the rest of the band was, here David is, very well educated, unlike some of his peers were before their musical careers(Chester at Burger King at Corey cleaning up crap with a GED), so his band mates would naturally appear to care very little about politics.

David is an articulate guy, so he expresses himself well, from what I understand he likely leaned Republican after 9/11, and he lyrically expressed his sense of betrayal with "Deify" and has shifted.

I love David, but I would expect some more informed responses about politics (although this was a short interview) from a political science major.
