Often times, New fans=new demands, and any artist who is all about pleasing the fans wont hesitate to "give them what they want", neglecting the old and few for the sake of the many new...has happened to alot of my fave music makers. The fact I have accepted is this: Mainstream music sucks because people just have no taste. Will never change. Period.

It's easy to associate the term "mainstream" with music that doesn't require a lot of time and skill to make, because that's what most mainstream music is these days. But when something becomes mainstream it pretty much just means it's really rare for someone to not know about. Like, Justin Beiber. (Sorry for the overused example.) If someone told you they didn't know who he was, that would be really out of the ordinary.
