  • Monsieur Wilde certainly knew some of the ruling family matriarchs, as he did depict them so well in his Lady Augusta; whose wisdoms and views are very resolute. Though the story of Monsieur Ernest-Jack have been lost and found, making him an agreeable member of the upper classes is somewhat too much designed the play works out quite well still, mostly to the warm but tired luxury verses of Monsieur Wild. While I don’t think one should recommend that way of thinking.

  • I can't believe this version with the formidable Wendy Hiller's 'parcel' isn't available in DVD!

  • lady bracknell is a BIIIIIIIIIIIITCH!

  • @bh5496

As even Lady Bracknell ironically said, being considerably advanced in years is no guarantee of respectability of character.

  • So campy and great! Jack's reaction is perfect!

  • 8:12

  • There isn't a single character in this play that I don't want to punch in the fucking face.

  • AAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGUUUHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to do this play at my school, and I'm Jack. And the girl playing gwendolen is freaking ugly!!!!!!

  • If one could consider Edith Evans' Lady Bracknell as Greco-Roman.. then Wendy Hillers' is Renaissance-revival..

  • I know a lot of people worship Edith Evans' Lady Bracknell, but really I love Hiller's interpretation.

  • poor jack...I feel like kicking that old lady!!!!

  • poor jack...

  • "A HANDABAG?!" haha Lady Bracknell is hilarious XD

  • Gabrielle Drake is gorgeous

  • they dine with us...or come in the evening at any rate...

    subtle funny lines!!

  • "You can hardly imagine that I and Lord Bracknell would dream of allowing our only daughter, a girl brought up with the utmost care, to marry into a cloakroooom and form an alliance with a paaarcellll?" *bursts out laughing* My favourite line, I think. ^^

  • I can imagine what effect it would have if an Englishman came to the USA and spoke like this!! He would be .. well laughed at or... I love because I love the British accent and intonation.

  • @bitbech thats not a british accent its english go to scotland and its a fucking new language up here

  • @bitbech You do know that English people don't actually talk like this... don't you?

  • The line is immateh-rial.

  • ig NOR ance

    hahah

  • "To lose one parent is a tragedy, but to lose both would be seen as a carelessness."

    " A Hah-n-duh-baaaaag?"

  • Simply love it!

  • "...reminds one of the worst excesses of the French revolution, and I presume you know what that unfortunate movement led to?"

  • I talked like this at my school for a day and got punched in the face.

  • @jpoon919 I try to talk like this every day. soooooo amusing.

  • @jpoon919 thats swak..i would what would happen if some one really had an acsent like that at your school...but thats so stupid why would someone punch you in the face for the way you tallk? Now thats shallow

  • @jpoon919 I would do that.

..except I take theater, and we're reading this

so instead of looking like a retard speaking like a british person from victorian times, I'll just sound like an over enthusiastic student of perhaps the most boring class at school.

  • Ha Ha - "Rise, sir, from this semi recumbent posture. It is most indecorous"

This play is overflowing with Great lines.

  • A HANDBAAG!

    haaa her one was rubbish!

  • Whoa! Love the scene where Earnest proposes to Gwendolen! Gwendolen is simply hillarious & the actress who plays the role is excellent! Absolutely love this drama!

  • that was the crappest 'a handbag' ever!

  • Is there any working video of the 1952 version? The one in the description's been removed. =(

  • her handbag line wasn't as funny as Edith Evans' but still ok i guess, thanks for sharing

  • stuffy ass people I swear :p

  • The young actress is the sister of the late, great Nick Drake.

  • The acting in this version does a disservice to the play. I feel awful saying this, but the Lady Bracknell here is dreadfully acted. The actress tries to act the role as Dame Edith Evans (note her intonation) and varies from this original poorly when she does.

All the actors are rather too stiff in their portrayal. This is a poor execution of the play and an unfortunate pain to watch.

I highly recommend what I believe is the best version put to film -- the 1952 with Michael Regrave as 'Earnest

  • Lady Bracknell here wasn't dreadfully acted. Wendy Hiller did a fantastic job - she was a very good actress and its the law that Lady Bracknell should be like that!

  • yes. i agree. though i thought gwendlon was done wuite well.

  • ...Belgrave Square. Why would you kill Lady Bracknell? She's the funniest character in the play!

  • I would take Aunt Augusta to Belgrade Square and take a shotgun to her head.

  • "...marry into a cloakroom and form an alliance with a parcel." Best line in the play, and still makes me laugh out loud. What a genius Wilde was.
