A great example of classic old Aussie/New Zealand rock. A really good band. Stephen Cummings does sound a bit like James Reyne but both bands (The Sports, Australian Crawl) were excellent in their own right.
This video sort of makes me sad. I love the song, but the actress was killed in a car accident, wasn't she? Either way, knowing she passed away, it's a little sad.
@THeMaskedBlogCritic yeah... the last piece is a rare out-take (one I luckily, against the odds, manage to obtain)... it is sad watching her having a laugh with the ever-awkward Stephen Cummings, showing her real self. Her last movie was called 'Going Down' which has a good soundtrack, mainly music of Aussie bands during that time period. She was dead before the movie's release. Worth checking out.
@nzoz1980 and @The MaskedBlogCritic - you're both only half right...Its not 'the main actress' who is the object of Stephen's affections in this clip, who was killed... Its the actress wearing glasses, who appears briefly near the end of the clip. (Standing up, hanging on to Martin) Her name was Vera Plevnik, and she had appeared in 'The Sullivans'
@valbean06 OH SHIT!!!! And here I am putting up that lovely ending bit and it's not even the right person...
To the 'main actress' I am sorry if I caused you and your loved ones any confusion, distress or what have you ... I really wish Stephen Cummings said something when he went looking through my Sports uploads...
@plangers1 . . . indeed it was, as was the one on the Goldy opened by Men At Work . . . played there hundreds of times with the best from here and o.s . . . . played the last night less than ten years later . . . it's now a shopping mall . . . who'd have thunk it on the Coast !!!
I always thought music vids really exploded when MTV came on the scene, but this and some other Sports vids date before its launch (MTV was launched in 1981)? I know some music vids (as we recognize them) came out as early as the 60's, but but these seem tailor made for the channel. Ahead of their time I guess. ♫
@motownmaniax No, MTV was launched because of the amount of promo-videos that were being made and often stored away. That's just one of the reasons why MTV existed.
Also, it's worthy of note that the first video-clip to be played on MTV was The Buggles 'Video Killed The Radio Star', which had been directed by Australian film-maker Russell Mulcahy - who also did 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', 'Hungry Like The Wolf', etc. Video-clip making was practised in Australia and UK prior to MTV.
Australian TV show 'Sounds' with Donnie Sutherland, not only launched the career of Russell Mulcahy (the show's assigned film-maker for hit songs that had no footage), but was also the role model for MTV, as it has been noted that MTV producers/directors flew to Australia to take note on how 'Sounds' was made, a year prior t MTV's launch. All notes that were taken were used to formulize MTV. I have a channel titled 'welovedonnie', which is based on 'Sounds'.
@nzoz1980 Exactly oz. There were even music videos in the 60's (not sure that's what they called them, though). Many probably think MTV was some stroke of genius but I looked at it as a natural evolution. The last few years people have been making homemade music vids and flooding them on channels like this. And the sophistication and presentation have gotten expotentially better -- amazing. Who knows what the next 20 years will bring. ;-)
@motownmaniax i hope that it'll come to the point that bands can run themselves - make their own CD's, their own videos, their own merchandise, without any middle men and there wouldn't be a resistence towards them... I hope YouTube is the beginning and these record companies wouldn't be so potent.
They must have done great shows on the Gold Coast - someone mentioned seeing them at Bombay Rock (Surfers Paradise) - I saw them at the Coolangatta hotel back in about 1980 - great gig. So many good shows at the Goldie back in those days.
@davidg5969 Ha mate I remember bombay rock glad someone else does seen lots of great shows there from man at work to the oils Angels and so many more also there was the play room another great place for live bands. Last time i was up on the goldie bombay rock was no more very sad to see.
Yeah, I love the Sports but I'm glad they finished at Sondra. Many tracks from Sondra sound much like early-80's middle of the road Adult-orientated pop... nearly as romantically-sweet as Chris Deburge, but also stail. Listen to Sondra while watching the Dudley Moore movie 'Arthur on silent and enjoy the desperation of a single-dateless middle-age man looking midlife crisis in the eye. Well, that's how I feel when I hear some tracks from Sondra.
Agreed. I have the Sondra album and it is just ok. It would have been good if they had have gone back to playing their more edgier stuff but that was unlikely to happen I suppose!
Agree, first listen and it is competent but uninspiring. If I was 25 years older would probably have bought the album, played it twice and kept it in my collection almost never played again. Sad about Vera Plevnik - 27 is way too short; will always be knocked about by Lauren who I got on well with dying before our 10yr high school reunion.
Vera was an actress who was most famous in The Sullivans. She died in a car accident at age 27. She has been in a few movies, won a logi (i believe) and was on her way up... very sad! She seemed pretty cool!
Thanks for the heads up. I never watched The Sullivans. I've got the Mushroom gig at the MCG in 1998 on DVD. Mr Cummings was in great form there too. Albeit having problems with the microphone during the set. LOL
Thanks for the clip, it's extremely good quality for 1980!!!
stone gone classic - like plenty others by this wonderful little ozzie band of the late 1970s & early 1980s. To think now you can book Steve Cummings to play at yr party!!!
2:20 Gee glad I looked at this clip now and realised Vera is the lady here that tragically died. Still, it's sad though -daz in oz
