  • I think that if Wizards unbans Stoneforge, Jace, preordain, and ponder, basically make Caw-Blade legal in Modern, all the turn 3 combo decks will be in check, because Caw-Blade stops combos (well Jace does anyway)

  • dismember was made cuz of twin haha lol

  • who is the guy who is very funny?

  • Why am I watching this? I don't understand anything. Intriguing though

  • swamp, dark ritual, lilliana, discard a reanimator target, pass. :)

  • David Williams ftw

  • deadmau5 :)

  • Is the track that played after the Intro a song that I can find anywhere?

  • "i think it's hilarious that we they have to ban blazing shoal. But they hafta do it." hahahahaha this was hilarious.

  • Dismember is a great spell but its not ban worthy come on pros.

  • Almost feels like The Magic Show from before. Great show!

btw, you should try to bring Drew on to the show more, he whine in an entertaining way. =)

  • Good update just wish there were more

  • For some reason I love to hear Drew complaining.

  • lol i love that Drew guy, hes right about everything he says.

  • The only "free" (free as in no mana) spells were the Pacts (slaughter, negation, titan) and the Pitch (FoW, pyrokinesis) spells.

  • The only "balanced" free mechanic I can think of is pitch spells, because they force inherent card-disadvantage for playing them free. However, that is also debatable considering how powerful Force of Will is, and of course today's banning of Blazing Shoal (though that is because Infect became a mechanic and the card was a dollar bin rare before that).

  • Well, so much for Mental Misstep.

  • PT Belcher. lol

  • drewbitchinglikeanemokid.vid

  • I think Cascade is the closest they've gotten to a free spell mechanic.

  • why no new spoilers??

    its spoilerseason!!!

  • In reference to "free mechanics" the guy forgot to mention stuff like Convoke and Cascade.

Convoke was not busted simply because of the cards it was printed on, plus creatures being more vulnerable in general. Affinity and convoke are essentially the same mechanic, just different tools. That being said they aren't technically "free" (Aside form affinity since it's on a bunch of colorless stuff too). Reducing a mana cost I think is a fair way to make spells above the curve.

    Cascade was decent.

  • rich hagon dancing at the end was pretty bouse.

  • As soon as "Animal Rights" by Deadmau5 started playing, I came. Everywhere.

  • Thumbs up if you know the Deadmau5 song at 11:45!

  • Drew, you forgot Delve!

  • Press 3: Drew Levin himself will tell that things are just fine

  • Drew forgot suspend. That was pretty fair

  • @tzheihoh You pay mana for suspend, though.

  • @tzheihoh You pay mana for suspend, though.

  • I think they picked the only 4 people that actually didn't hate double faced cards to do this interview. They suck.

  • Shoals seem like a fair mechanic.

    Well not with Infect.

  • Does Drew like the change or not? I'm not even totally sure.

  • LSV "I'm actually not unhappy with another awesome counterspell" I am so shocked. For reals.

  • Haha Ali aintrazi is awesome.

  • Thumbs up if you heard Deadmau5 from 11:45 to 13:00 :)

  • Very Very good show thank you very much

  • People are stupid.

  • innistrad lilians looks like a female version of John finkle

  • This is a very VERY informative video... For Magic R&D.

  • Rich Hagon is hilarious at the end

  • Noooo! don't ban blazing shoal aw sad face

  • Fairest "free" card? Cloud of Faeries? Yeah, that's saying something.

  • @CptAwesumo disrupting shoal is pretty fair (and pretty bad.)

  • @sakonhagakure And that's why everyone wants it banned. How embarrassing for Magic...

  • jeeez, drew sounds like chapin

  • Dismember isn't that bad for constructed, it's not perfect, but eh. I think this video has alot of solid disapproval of certain things, but also alot of useless bitching. Things aren't as bad as Drew Levin says, but Modern could use some tweeks. Big surprise, a new format has a few quirks that need to get punched out (like Blazing Shoal, Vesuva and possibly Goyf and Preordain, though doubtful) What makes the format sick for combo decks though is that your deck only needs to be 5 cards

  • @wynzerman No it's awful for constructed. Any card that makes /5 creatures unplayable is bad.

  • @Stillson14 That all depends as well, it's bad for Standard- certainly, but 4 life isn't anywhere near as "free" as advertised, and in larger formats it is competition with cards which essentially do the same thing in just about every color but for more mana but no life-loss. The real problem it presents is in standard because it ruins Infect decks since 4 life isn't much of a loss when your opponent isn't winning by knobbing down your life

  • Drew doesn't even sound mad. He sounds just like Chapin does when he gets really into it. I don't know why people are saying that he's mad or butthurt.

Also, he isn't whining or crying. He's presenting arguments and isn't blindly running his mouth. There's a very clear difference between the two.

  • Evan, thank you, top quality show, right here :D.

    Thank you, so much.

  • Gerry Thompson will always be the MTG curmudgeon poster-child, but Drew Levin is taking that title away from Gerry. That or Drew seriously needs some therapy.

  • dismember

    (B) (B/P) (B/P)

    was that so hard?

  • @ColywogGamer There's a reason why it's competitve, people get all the necessary cards and spend alot of time on grinding and making decks work, of course price is an obstacle believe me (I'm 15 with almost no source of income) but I do play competitively it is a challenge but honestly I have heard this way too many times. There's a price to pay to go competitive, it won't change.

  • If you are casual but wish you had a chance to compete in protour thumbs up my other comment

  • So I have a question. I don't buy specific cards and just kind of make decks out of the stuff I get in packs. Granted, I do buy a lot of packs, but how is a semi casual person like me who wants to try to win with what I get supposed to do well against these decks one person thought up and everyone else bought. It just seems like these tournaments are a little unfair to people who don't have $100+ to spend on a single deck, and it reduces varitey. Maybe its just me, but has anyone else seen that?

  • Jesus Drew, could you be anymore butthurt?

  • @DrMetropolis So what if he's butthurt? He's right, which is what matters.

  • I'd like to make Drew butthurt, if you know what I mean.

  • I don't think I've heard anyone bitch about something quite as much as Levin in my entire life. if you really don't like playing against those types of decks..... Play those types of decks. Until new bannings, quite whining, and join the winning team instead of crying that your Zoo deck didn't get there,

  • WOLFGANG GARTNER FUCK YEA

  • Drew Levin may be right but he sounds like a dick, Kibler may be wrong but we could have a drink.

  • This video was egregious.

  • Michael Jacob with no hat?!?! THIS IS MADNESS!!

  • They did make a balanced free mechanic: Convoke. It was just so poor that no one really considers it anymore.

  • @LotusPaintball chord of calling was an awesome card for quite a long time.

snuffout was balanced and free though.

  • Thumbs-up for being down with the mau5.

  • lately the magic show has been getting worse and worse every episode... this episode is a definite exception. loved it

  • He missed cascade as a free mechanic that was fair.. oh wait it wasnt.

  • Can unbanning mental misstep be good for modern?

  • @electricturf

I think scrapping the entire ban list would be great for modern. had they stuck with the community cup ban list people would've ported some decks from standard and legacy to modern and i doubt we would be stuck with a combo format. Granted we'd see alot of caw blade vs jund or faeries affinity but i'd rather have that then the 100 flavors of combo decks that infest modern today.

  • Great show Evan :D

What was that song at the end?

  • here's an idea pros.instead of adding to the ban list (which is making alot of people in my area not want to play modern) how bout you scrap the ban list and allow control to have a presence in the format.

  • Fantastic Show Evan!

  • Interesting how Evan's best shows don't feature him at all.

  • Would have loved this ep had all the Drew Levin stuff been cut. Stick to the engaging pros, Evan. Otherwise, great ep.

  • LOL @ Drew I love him

  • One of your best shows Evan. Aced it.

  • To everyone saying Drew is crying, how exactly is he wrong about the Modern format?

Also, I think the pros are overrating Liliana. Only Brad seems to get it right.

  • @clnolen Didn't say he was wrong. Just whining about it. None of the other guys were btching like Drew.

  • pretty good track choice

  • Thank you for 11:45 "animal rights" I guess next up is Ghost'n'Stuff!

  • Wow.. cry a little more Drew. Holy crap.

  • lol get drew levin a tissue and some tampons. Hes upset that these guys aren't SCG noob players he can beat on.

  • Wow Michael Jacob without a beanie?

  • Drew might be bitching nonstop, but we all know he's right: free spells are ALWAYS trouble when have generic effects.

  • @manudosde He forgot to add in Cascade to his list of free spells. And yes that was busted also.

  • @manudosde I agree with that, but he doesn't need to cry so much about it.

  • Grats on getting an interview with Drew Levin mid-tilt

  • Someone has no idea what tempo means.

  • i prefer this ti crap legacy where blue IS degenerate and you play blue or you don't win as much.

  • @Nyzzeh

really? That's why Zoo and various death and taxes decks are tier 1 decks in legacy? as well as bw stoneforge?

  • @sakonhagakure bw tier1? death and taxes? lol tier1 decks all play blue except maybe zoo and maverick

  • Reprinting force of will would fix modern.

  • Thanks for spoiling the Scars-novel for us!

  • is that the vampire hexmage original art, looks amazing!

    want!

  • Solid Episode. Dismember is bad (for the game).

  • "I like to sing-a, about the moon-a in-a June-a and-a Spring-a."

~Richard Hagon on the intricacies of the Modern format.

  • OK for everyone that's bitching about modern, why not listen to what everyone else has thought about it except this biased TMS? Have you actually played the format? Build decks? Brainstormed how to beat them? Heck, why not trust LSV and hear what he says about the format at CFB?

  • Seriously the best Magic show yet. Love the interviews. That, and drew making eyes at wotc every time. XD

  • Wow. Drew Levin just bitches... and bitches... and bitches...

  • i get so excited when i see the credit screen and there is still time left on the video

    *BONUS FOOTAGE*

and like always i enjoyed the bonus

  • The pacts are probably the only time they got free spells right, followed by suspend, then hideaway (which isn't really free), then shoals.

  • Who is Drew Levin and why does he cry so much?

  • Drew tries too hard to be gerry. Good show this week, more innistrad spoilers!

  • Modern:

Turn 1: infect guy= Inkmoth Nexus, Vector Asp or Glistener Elf

Turn 2: Win with Blazing Shoal (remove any CMC > 9 red card ex: Progenitus, Reaper King, Dragonstorm, Greater Gargadon) Gitaxian Probe thins and let's you see if they can stop you, Slaughter Pact removes a blocker if any. Mishra's Bauble and Street Wraith help you play a 48 card deck. You dont even need most of the cards i listed since these are just a few options for a turn to win!

  • Am I the only one who finds Drew Levin to be funny?

  • @battlexon yep.

  • Out of all the "free" mechanics that he listed, i'd say storm is the fairest out of the bunch.

  • Most broken to least:

    Affinity

    Storm

    Phyrexian

    Urza Saga Untap Mechanic

  • Drew Levin bringing the MTG real talk.

  • Drew is keeping it real.

  • Drew Levin speaks for me!

  • I just love Drew Levin's humour and sarcasm.

  • Drew Levin...the new cranky old man, Sry, Gerry, you're dethroned.

  • Evan, please add Kibler's shuffling clip to the magic show intro montage!

  • Drew seems so butthurt for like 3/4s of the questions. I do agree with him though, WotC has botched pretty much every "free" mechanic they've tried.

  • if only drew levin were half as cool as he thought he was

  • Oh, and yay Deadmau5. XD

  • Storm is a perfectly fair mechanic, it's just enablers that make it degenerate.

  • Wizards banned StoneForge Mystic just because Caw Blade got to the point where it just became either pro- or anti- decks in the tourneys. But when you see 5 of the top eight Blazing Shoal and Progenitus, how are you suppowwed to win in a game of chance by turn three? You need low level counters to balance that out. Mental Mistep is a one-drop stopper and Valakut Takes at least a few turns to get going. Now we know, so please, either don't let this format break or don't complain when others do

  • NO CHAPIN!?!?!? >:(

  • OMG, I really like your show but this is soooo not true. The first part was just bitching about bannings. And they shouldnt ban anything. Maybye Emrakul.

PS: Why didnt u ask LVS about the bannnings, I know for a fact that he dosent want too many changes.

    The rest was ok.

  • drew levin eats dicks

  • drew levin seems like a dick

  • @donotfeedthetroll he knows what hes talking about though.

  • @donotfeedthetroll Drew definitely comes off as a person that always thinks he's right...thus he'll be perceived as a total a-hole. That said, i didn't find anything wrong with what he said here...just how he said it.

  • Easy. Affinity was by far the most broken then storm. Strangely phyrexian mana is probably last on that list.

  • I really liked this show. It has the feel of the good ole' days of TMS. Spot on good sir.

  • Pacts were quite fair. Shoals were somewhat fair because they sucked. I really like the counter one because the removed cards converted mana has to be EXACTLY the same mana cost as the spell your trying to counter. More balanced then FoW or MM. But come on, anything free in magic is too good. Moxs, affinity, smother/submerge, fow, storm, hypergensis, dredge anything free has problems.Anything that accelerates also has problems. Magic is a race, and if you can do something faste/free its too good

  • I was seriously surprised when people didn't expect stupid combos with infect and double twin. Like seriously, no one expected a combo format? It's the last extended season without thopterdepths or elves. only now, "Btw you guys, we banned all the good blue stuff"-Wizards

  • The sheer amount of Mental Misstep in Legacy and Dismember in Standard shows what's wrong with this.

Phyrexian mana is a fine free mechanic; the problem is the cards they were on. Without Misstep and Dismember the mechanic is neat but safe and doesn't damage any formats.

  • THe modern format doesn'T seem as fun as legacy, not as wide open...more broken (do you realise that!?!?) ... and dark confidant goes up in price and it doesn't make the top 8 as a central card of every deck?!?!? I don't like modern...

  • I loved how this show is more deep into the game. I Would interview those guy anytime to answer my question. I love it! YOu know Even, I want to speak to you someday... :P

  • I was disappointed to see the top decks at Philly were pretty much all Splinter Twin combo, Storm combo, Blazing Shoal + Infect combo, Affinity, and Zoo. The Infect deck was clever and I was impressed you could make good Affinity without Artifact Lands, but overall I hated the sea of combo. Weird that it seems with all the initial bannings they need to probably ban more stuff...

  • When did Liliana generate blockers? She does nothing to protect herself, nor does she generate card "advantage" you each discard a card, so you are both at a -1.

  • @EnderDragon -2: Target player sacrifices a creature.

thats protecting herself AND providing card advantage. also, when you use her you will probably inevitibly run some number of flashback cards (that are in the new set), meaning the cards that you discard will have use later in the game. also, knowing that you are discarding cards means you can build your deck around it by using things that benefit you when they are in the graveyard, or things that you want in the graveyard, etc.

  • Nice lighting bro, were you filming to get the "horror in the shadows" feel? it worked.

  • You didn't interview Jon Finkel? :(((((((

  • The Magic Show #243 - Drew Levin buttsore about scrubbing out PT Philly

  • @RPrajzner

God he fucking pissed me off to no end.

  • lol at LSVs glasses shadow mustashe. or however you spell that.

  • 4:35

  • This is such a biased TMS... Have you interviewed ANYONE who supports the format? As opposed to getting so many different people to harp on it..

  • @DoomDG While that may have some truth to it, it is the sort of thing WotC needs to hear, or nothing will ever be done about it.

  • @EnderDragon Well, the same thing has been written by so many writers over the week, and wotc pretty much knows the feedback. Also, I'm assuming that everyone was asked the same questions, yet LSV's section on modern was cut out(prolly cuz he is actually in favour of such a format, with good reason)

  • Popular curmudgeon. =D

  • Cascade must be the fair free machanic!

  • @nickjoeb Hypergenesis...

  • Love the ending.. Thank YOU for watching.

  • 1 CMC Answers to Blazing Inkmoth (in Technicolor)

    White: Condemn, Path to Exile

Blue: Nix, Spell Pierce, Unsummon, Twisted Image

Black: Disfigure, Darkblast, Peppersmoke, Virulent Wound, Stabbing Wound

Red: Gut Shot, Lightning Bolt, Magma Spray, Shock

    Green: Oxidize, Nature's Claim

    Hybrid: Scar

    Artifact: Pithing Needle

It took me less than 15 minutes to come up with this list

  • pact of negation, spell pierce, muddle the mixture.

  • Comment removed

  • I really liked this episode. I'm all about talking to players and opinions.

I love playing mtg and talking magic theory. At the same time I love the flaming on the game and the complaints about busted stuff. I like the episodes better when there are complaints about the game rather then talking about how good it is.

    Is that weird?

  • at least theres good music :) also i want to hang out with brain kibler.

  • I agree with him on the Inkmoth Nexus. You got one turn.

  • @piplup10203854 no, they need to find a shoal and a 9 drop plus a counterspell if you have anything. ITS NOT THAT EASY.. which is why ONLY 1 deck made top8, on the back of sam black's limited prowess..

  • @DoomDG I am not saying it is easy I am just saying I agree with him that's all and I believe he said "your sorcery and removal is dead all your guys who don't fly don't matter, untap land blazing shoal your dead."

    I just said I agree.

  • Alright Drew, challenge accepted.

    From least to most offensive:

    4. Phyrexian Mana - I'm agree with Kibler that the mechanic is a great tool on things that feel like artifacts, and even for simple effects. The only offenders here are Misstep and Dismember

    3. Storm - Storm is more fair because most storm decks are basically Belcher decks

    2. Urza untap - This is so broken it would be #1 if not for,

    1. Affinity, the mechanic that killed competitive play, even after banning many of its key pieces

  • @ashiinu37 I want to know why he forgot cascade

  • Thanks for the coverage Evan, I really enjoyed this episode :)

  • I liked Erayo...

  • Does Drew Levin write for SCG or CF. I will now be following him like a hawk. He hit the nail on the head with Modern. A week after it came out online, I shit you not I played 21 games against Twin and 2 against UR infect. I hate this format so much.

  • @jrckr1 SCG Premium Writer.

  • Ahaha Drew. I wonder how long it took him to come up with those metaphors, he usually doesn't have such crisp and angsty lines when talking on GGs live.

  • of course they do this when im not back home in Philly

  • Drew, you mad bro? :P

But in all seriousness, I think he nailed it here.

  • Thank you Evan, for bringing back the old intro style :D loving the coverage and glad to see you're back on track!

  • Drew Levin is completely outspoken, but when it comes to eternal formats, he's incredible, and more importantly, he's right. Keep him around, Evan. Better yet, let him guest star with Gerry anytime Legacy/Modern comes into the picture.

  • problem with modern?

    just 4 letters B Y O S

  • @tito9090 thats for Build Your Own Standard
