I think that if Wizards unbans Stoneforge, Jace, preordain, and ponder, basically make Caw-Blade legal in Modern, all the turn 3 combo decks will be in check, because Caw-Blade stops combos (well Jace does anyway)
The only "balanced" free mechanic I can think of is pitch spells, because they force inherent card-disadvantage for playing them free. However, that is also debatable considering how powerful Force of Will is, and of course today's banning of Blazing Shoal (though that is because Infect became a mechanic and the card was a dollar bin rare before that).
In reference to "free mechanics" the guy forgot to mention stuff like Convoke and Cascade.
Convoke was not busted simply because of the cards it was printed on, plus creatures being more vulnerable in general. Affinity and convoke are essentially the same mechanic, just different tools. That being said they aren't technically "free" (Aside form affinity since it's on a bunch of colorless stuff too). Reducing a mana cost I think is a fair way to make spells above the curve.
Dismember isn't that bad for constructed, it's not perfect, but eh. I think this video has alot of solid disapproval of certain things, but also alot of useless bitching. Things aren't as bad as Drew Levin says, but Modern could use some tweeks. Big surprise, a new format has a few quirks that need to get punched out (like Blazing Shoal, Vesuva and possibly Goyf and Preordain, though doubtful) What makes the format sick for combo decks though is that your deck only needs to be 5 cards
@Stillson14 That all depends as well, it's bad for Standard- certainly, but 4 life isn't anywhere near as "free" as advertised, and in larger formats it is competition with cards which essentially do the same thing in just about every color but for more mana but no life-loss. The real problem it presents is in standard because it ruins Infect decks since 4 life isn't much of a loss when your opponent isn't winning by knobbing down your life
Drew doesn't even sound mad. He sounds just like Chapin does when he gets really into it. I don't know why people are saying that he's mad or butthurt.
Also, he isn't whining or crying. He's presenting arguments and isn't blindly running his mouth. There's a very clear difference between the two.
Gerry Thompson will always be the MTG curmudgeon poster-child, but Drew Levin is taking that title away from Gerry. That or Drew seriously needs some therapy.
@ColywogGamer There's a reason why it's competitve, people get all the necessary cards and spend alot of time on grinding and making decks work, of course price is an obstacle believe me (I'm 15 with almost no source of income) but I do play competitively it is a challenge but honestly I have heard this way too many times. There's a price to pay to go competitive, it won't change.
So I have a question. I don't buy specific cards and just kind of make decks out of the stuff I get in packs. Granted, I do buy a lot of packs, but how is a semi casual person like me who wants to try to win with what I get supposed to do well against these decks one person thought up and everyone else bought. It just seems like these tournaments are a little unfair to people who don't have $100+ to spend on a single deck, and it reduces varitey. Maybe its just me, but has anyone else seen that?
I don't think I've heard anyone bitch about something quite as much as Levin in my entire life. if you really don't like playing against those types of decks..... Play those types of decks. Until new bannings, quite whining, and join the winning team instead of crying that your Zoo deck didn't get there,
I think scrapping the entire ban list would be great for modern. had they stuck with the community cup ban list people would've ported some decks from standard and legacy to modern and i doubt we would be stuck with a combo format. Granted we'd see alot of caw blade vs jund or faeries affinity but i'd rather have that then the 100 flavors of combo decks that infest modern today.
here's an idea pros.instead of adding to the ban list (which is making alot of people in my area not want to play modern) how bout you scrap the ban list and allow control to have a presence in the format.
OK for everyone that's bitching about modern, why not listen to what everyone else has thought about it except this biased TMS? Have you actually played the format? Build decks? Brainstormed how to beat them? Heck, why not trust LSV and hear what he says about the format at CFB?
Turn 1: infect guy= Inkmoth Nexus, Vector Asp or Glistener Elf
Turn 2: Win with Blazing Shoal (remove any CMC > 9 red card ex: Progenitus, Reaper King, Dragonstorm, Greater Gargadon) Gitaxian Probe thins and let's you see if they can stop you, Slaughter Pact removes a blocker if any. Mishra's Bauble and Street Wraith help you play a 48 card deck. You dont even need most of the cards i listed since these are just a few options for a turn to win!
Wizards banned StoneForge Mystic just because Caw Blade got to the point where it just became either pro- or anti- decks in the tourneys. But when you see 5 of the top eight Blazing Shoal and Progenitus, how are you suppowwed to win in a game of chance by turn three? You need low level counters to balance that out. Mental Mistep is a one-drop stopper and Valakut Takes at least a few turns to get going. Now we know, so please, either don't let this format break or don't complain when others do
OMG, I really like your show but this is soooo not true. The first part was just bitching about bannings. And they shouldnt ban anything. Maybye Emrakul.

Pacts were quite fair. Shoals were somewhat fair because they sucked. I really like the counter one because the removed cards converted mana has to be EXACTLY the same mana cost as the spell your trying to counter. More balanced then FoW or MM. I was seriously surprised when people didn't expect stupid combos with infect and double twin. Like seriously, no one expected a combo format? It's the last extended season without thopterdepths or elves. only now, "Btw you guys, we banned all the good blue stuff"-Wizards
The sheer amount of Mental Misstep in Legacy and Dismember in Standard shows what's wrong with this.
Phyrexian mana is a fine free mechanic; the problem is the cards they were on. Without Misstep and Dismember the mechanic is neat but safe and doesn't damage any formats.
THe modern format doesn'T seem as fun as legacy, not as wide open...more broken (do you realise that!?!?) ... and dark confidant goes up in price and it doesn't make the top 8 as a central card of every deck?!?!? I don't like modern...
I loved how this show is more deep into the game. I Would interview those guy anytime to answer my question. I love it! YOu know Even, I want to speak to you someday... :P
I was disappointed to see the top decks at Philly were pretty much all Splinter Twin combo, Storm combo, Blazing Shoal + Infect combo, Affinity, and Zoo. The Infect deck was clever and I was impressed you could make good Affinity without Artifact Lands, but overall I hated the sea of combo. Weird that it seems with all the initial bannings they need to probably ban more stuff...
When did Liliana generate blockers? She does nothing to protect herself, nor does she generate card "advantage" you each discard a card, so you are both at a -1.
@EnderDragon -2: Target player sacrifices a creature.
thats protecting herself AND providing card advantage. also, when you use her you will probably inevitibly run some number of flashback cards (that are in the new set), meaning the cards that you discard will have use later in the game. also, knowing that you are discarding cards means you can build your deck around it by using things that benefit you when they are in the graveyard, or things that you want in the graveyard, etc.
@EnderDragon Well, the same thing has been written by so many writers over the week, and wotc pretty much knows the feedback. Also, I'm assuming that everyone was asked the same questions, yet LSV's section on modern was cut out(prolly cuz he is actually in favour of such a format, with good reason)
I really liked this episode. I'm all about talking to players and opinions.
I love playing mtg and talking magic theory. At the same time I love the flaming on the game and the complaints about busted stuff. I like the episodes better when there are complaints about the game rather then talking about how good it is.
@piplup10203854 no, they need to find a shoal and a 9 drop plus a counterspell if you have anything. ITS NOT THAT EASY.. which is why ONLY 1 deck made top8, on the back of sam black's limited prowess..
@DoomDG I am not saying it is easy I am just saying I agree with him that's all and I believe he said "your sorcery and removal is dead all your guys who don't fly don't matter, untap land blazing shoal your dead."
4. Phyrexian Mana - I'm agree with Kibler that the mechanic is a great tool on things that feel like artifacts, and even for simple effects. The only offenders here are Misstep and Dismember
3. Storm - Storm is more fair because most storm decks are basically Belcher decks
2. Urza untap - This is so broken it would be #1 if not for,
1. Affinity, the mechanic that killed competitive play, even after banning many of its key pieces
Does Drew Levin write for SCG or CF. I will now be following him like a hawk. He hit the nail on the head with Modern. A week after it came out online, I shit you not I played 21 games against Twin and 2 against UR infect. I hate this format so much.
Ahaha Drew. I wonder how long it took him to come up with those metaphors, he usually doesn't have such crisp and angsty lines when talking on GGs live.
Drew Levin is completely outspoken, but when it comes to eternal formats, he's incredible, and more importantly, he's right. Keep him around, Evan. Better yet, let him guest star with Gerry anytime Legacy/Modern comes into the picture.

This is such a biased TMS... Have you interviewed ANYONE who supports the format? As opposed to getting so many different people to harp on it..
DoomDG 5 months ago
@DoomDG While that may have some truth to it, it is the sort of thing WotC needs to hear, or nothing will ever be done about it.
EnderDragon 5 months ago
@EnderDragon Well, the same thing has been written by so many writers over the week, and wotc pretty much knows the feedback. Also, I'm assuming that everyone was asked the same questions, yet LSV's section on modern was cut out(prolly cuz he is actually in favour of such a format, with good reason)

I really liked this episode. I'm all about talking to players and opinions.
I love playing mtg and talking magic theory. At the same time I love the flaming on the game and the complaints about busted stuff. I like the episodes better when there are complaints about the game rather then talking about how good it is.
Is that weird?

at least theres good music :) also i want to hang out with brain kibler.

I agree with him on the Inkmoth Nexus. You got one turn.
piplup10203854 5 months ago
@piplup10203854 no, they need to find a shoal and a 9 drop plus a counterspell if you have anything. ITS NOT THAT EASY.. which is why ONLY 1 deck made top8, on the back of sam black's limited prowess..
DoomDG 5 months ago
@DoomDG I am not saying it is easy I am just saying I agree with him that's all and I believe he said "your sorcery and removal is dead all your guys who don't fly don't matter, untap land blazing shoal your dead."
I just said I agree.
piplup10203854 5 months ago
Alright Drew, challenge accepted.
From least to most offensive:

Ahaha Drew. I wonder how long it took him to come up with those metaphors, he usually doesn't have such crisp and angsty lines when talking on GGs live.

of course they do this when im not back home in Philly

Drew Levin is completely outspoken, but when it comes to eternal formats, he's incredible, and more importantly, he's right. Keep him around, Evan. Better yet, let him guest star with Gerry anytime Legacy/Modern comes into the picture.
