The only "free" (free as in no mana) spells were the Pacts (slaughter, negation, titan) and the Pitch (FoW, pyrokinesis) spells.

The only "balanced" free mechanic I can think of is pitch spells, because they force inherent card-disadvantage for playing them free. However, that is also debatable considering how powerful Force of Will is, and of course today's banning of Blazing Shoal (though that is because Infect became a mechanic and the card was a dollar bin rare before that).

In reference to "free mechanics" the guy forgot to mention stuff like Convoke and Cascade.

Convoke was not busted simply because of the cards it was printed on, plus creatures being more vulnerable in general. Affinity and convoke are essentially the same mechanic, just different tools. That being said they aren't technically "free" (Aside form affinity since it's on a bunch of colorless stuff too). Reducing a mana cost I think is a fair way to make spells above the curve.

Dismember isn't that bad for constructed, it's not perfect, but eh. I think this video has alot of solid disapproval of certain things, but also alot of useless bitching. Things aren't as bad as Drew Levin says, but Modern could use some tweeks. Big surprise, a new format has a few quirks that need to get punched out (like Blazing Shoal, Vesuva and possibly Goyf and Preordain, though doubtful) What makes the format sick for combo decks though is that your deck only needs to be 5 cards

The real problem it presents is in standard because it ruins Infect decks since 4 life isn't much of a loss when your opponent isn't winning by knobbing down your life

So I have a question. I don't buy specific cards and just kind of make decks out of the stuff I get in packs. Granted, I do buy a lot of packs, but how is a semi casual person like me who wants to try to win with what I get supposed to do well against these decks one person thought up and everyone else bought. I think scrapping the entire ban list would be great for modern. had they stuck with the community cup ban list people would've ported some decks from standard and legacy to modern and i doubt we would be stuck with a combo format. Granted we'd see alot of caw blade vs jund or faeries affinity but i'd rather have that then the 100 flavors of combo decks that infest modern today.

Turn 2: Win with Blazing Shoal (remove any CMC > 9 red card ex: Progenitus, Reaper King, Dragonstorm, Greater Gargadon) Gitaxian Probe thins and let's you see if they can stop you, Slaughter Pact removes a blocker if any. Mishra's Bauble and Street Wraith help you play a 48 card deck. You dont even need most of the cards i listed since these are just a few options for a turn to win!

Wizards banned StoneForge Mystic just because Caw Blade got to the point where it just became either pro- or anti- decks in the tourneys. But when you see 5 of the top eight Blazing Shoal and Progenitus, how are you suppowwed to win in a game of chance by turn three? You need low level counters to balance that out. Mental Mistep is a one-drop stopper and Valakut Takes at least a few turns to get going. Now we know, so please, either don't let this format break or don't complain when others do

Pacts were quite fair. Shoals were somewhat fair because they sucked. I really like the counter one because the removed cards converted mana has to be EXACTLY the same mana cost as the spell your trying to counter. More balanced then FoW or MM. But come on, anything free in magic is too good. Moxs, affinity, smother/submerge, fow, storm, hypergensis, dredge anything free has problems.Anything that accelerates also has problems. Magic is a race, and if you can do something faste/free its too good

The sheer amount of Mental Misstep in Legacy and Dismember in Standard shows what's wrong with this.

Phyrexian mana is a fine free mechanic; the problem is the cards they were on. Without Misstep and Dismember the mechanic is neat but safe and doesn't damage any formats.

I was disappointed to see the top decks at Philly were pretty much all Splinter Twin combo, Storm combo, Blazing Shoal + Infect combo, Affinity, and Zoo. The Infect deck was clever and I was impressed you could make good Affinity without Artifact Lands, but overall I hated the sea of combo. Weird that it seems with all the initial bannings they need to probably ban more stuff...

thats protecting herself AND providing card advantage. also, when you use her you will probably inevitibly run some number of flashback cards (that are in the new set), meaning the cards that you discard will have use later in the game. also, knowing that you are discarding cards means you can build your deck around it by using things that benefit you when they are in the graveyard, or things that you want in the graveyard, etc.
