Marian is a fantastic pianist, a virtuoso really. Yet he is not really supported well by his bassist brother, who has a tendency to play flat. Uggh! Not to mention the lame drummer.
I haven't read any nit-picking--just pretty thoughtful opinions. I agree that while he has chops up the wazoo, he doesn't swing (the whole group doesn't) and he's pretty unmusical, IMO. Virtuosity doesn't equal taste (or feel). In fact, sometimes it's a substitute for taste. When you have chops like this, it's easy to dazzle. That doesn't mean the player is doing anything especially interesting. I watched a few other clips of his, he seems to play this way all the time. Flash gets old quickly.
Uh...no...terms like "swing" are subjective. Anything that involves "feel" is highly subjective. Different musicians play w/ different rhythmic emphasis, place beats in slightly different places, and so on. Likewise, different listeners (or different players) react to these individual variations in feel in different ways. So, do you think this group swings?
look, there is no discussion, marian is basicly know for two things.. One: he has an amazing technique. Two: he swings like there is no twomorrow... I am a big oscar peterson fan, and there is no denying marians playing is similar. Oscar was called the swinging techniquan and I think marian falls under the same category...
An excellent pianist but I couldn't help thinking "This has already been done" by Oscar." But it's a good example of how 2 piano players can be monsters but for some indefinable reason one can get your foot tapping but the other one will have you stompin walkin.
While I deeply wish I had the technique I sure would not want to wish to lose the inner connection to the "story line" of jazz and blues to which this pianist doesn't have much reference at all.
However, I believe he would be better supported by a drummer who would switch to sticks as the groove gets more intense (he does that FAR too late in the game) and PLEASE buy the bass player a better pickup/mic system- there's just just clicking noise coming from his axe - not one discernable note.
To build good technique Oscar practiced a lot of Hanon and Czerny studies.
Also you need to know how to approach the instrument but the improvisation ability is built by yourself by trying to emulate such greats but the technique is not very difficult to build.
this guy is pure technician not much originality one thing whoever wrote singing in the rain got the idea from grofe and this tune from grand canyon suite
Im trying very hard to love the speed and virtuosity of his playing, and for some parts I do, but over all I can only give this a B+. A machine guns only purpose is to riddle something with bullets. Id like to enjoy the music before I die. Take me there slowly or more slower. There was once a time when all I wanted to do was play like this. Dont try it too often. You might miss somethng.
Just wanted to mention, "On the Trail" is by Ferde Grofé -- from his "Grand Canyon Suite." Although Oscar did kind of "own" this tune in the jazz idiom. :)
What wonderful playing...yes, a lot of notes...but that's what he's doing. Nit-picking about a performance like this tells us more about the nit-picker than the player! Just enjoy it and marvel and the musicality. And maybe practice a little more???
wow, definitely a lot of nit-picking out there. This guy is incredible. Sure, he sounds like he's channeling Oscar Peterson, but...years ago, supposedly, Phil Woods was playing at a club when a heckler shouted, "You suck! All you're doing is playing like Charlie Parker!" After the set he walked offstage and pretended to hand his sax to the heckler. "Here, " he said, "YOU play like Charlie Parker."
This Guy is a monster. He's got the most chops I've heard in a long time. Let's face it, Oscar has influenced nearly every piano player who has heard him. You don't have to nit-pick about 'grease' or style. I happen to like fast chops. TeTe Montiliu was my favorite for a long time. Now it's this guy. I am a professional keyboard player and I don't nearly have the chops to criticise this dude. He's a monster.
How about "On the Trail" from Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe, not Oscar Peterson. There is nothing wrong with being influenced by the masters, Oscar by Art Tatum and this gentleman by both Oscar and Tatum. The problem I have with the performance is the bass player. His time is not solid and his taste and note choice (lines) is not always great. This drummer was not in the recorded sound until the very end. This guy has a lot of chops and clearly loves jazz. Good for him.
Randy, thanks for replying to my comment above. I understand what you are saying. The only thing I have to add is, you love Oscar Peterson and Marian obviously loves him too! If Marian can emulate Peterson, that is an accomplishment on its own merit! He has monsta status in my world. There's a drum teacher out there named Thomas Lang. AWESOME drummer. If you can play like him, you're one bad drummer in my book. Yo Randy, emulation is a good thang! Thanks again.
Marian plays flawlessly great though not very original.. He's doing the same thing classical pianists do.. Instead of Bach or Debussy he's reciting the repertoire of Peterson. To me it's too premeditated and more of a piano recital than a jazz performance.. It lacks spontaneity..
So Randy, which part of this video were you listening to to come up with that conclusion? I am assuming you are an accomplished jazz pianist that understands spontaneity completely. Don't be playah hatin' Randy. This guy is really phenomenal, well practiced and well rehearsed. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Actually I'm a drummer.. I like this arrangement and grew up listening to Oscar.. Just making the point that it sounds to me like Marian is trying to emulate Peterson at the expense of being loose and creative.. The man obviously has the chops to perform Peterson's repertoire.. Still more like a piano recital than a jazz set..
My fave in this style is Johnny O'Neal. He has the creative chops, is loose, and has the grease..

It is very clear from you comment that you have no idea what swing is. Things either swing or they dont, it not a matter of oppinion...

You are the master of the keyboard together with Art Tatum.
It really swings when you play, it is too good to be true.
You know when to explode with passages of fire and when to take it easy as a soft wind breaze.
