My father went into the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 after graduating as a chemical engineer from U of Toronto. He was not a pilot but repaired and flew in them. I read if one had a 3 minute head start an ME109 couldn't catch them. Had two Rolls Royce Merlin engines --what the Spitfire had. Some of the wood was balsa which I imagine kept it light.
My father helped to build Mosquito wings in North London during WWII. He bragged about the all wood plane and was proud to be part of its manufacture
This might sound ridiculous, but I once read an article that proposed that the De Havilland Mosquito, though claimed to be made of wood, was actually made of metal like any other plane, to trick the Germans into wasting millions of Deutschmarks and years of research trying to develop a German equivalent out of wood. Sounds to me like something the English would do.
My Grand father [ Doug Hunter ] was the Engineering Director for DH in Canada he came to Canada in 1939 to build the Mosquito I have hundreds of photo on the build plus all of the test's that were done Thank you ever so much for uploading this video
This plane was called "The Wooden Wonder". There are 2 films made of the exploits of this wonderful plane. One is the famous film--"633 Squadron"--the other is a film called i think "Mosquito Squdron". It was one of the fastest planes in the war and was much loved by it's pilots.

Being labour intensive it the manufacturing process employed a lot of people.

although wood can be heavier than alloy and other metals wood was not in short supply in wartime, also it was much easier to make
