Those dictionary writers really fucked English. Instead of making conventional, easy-to-understand spelling, because of them the written language has stuff like 'tion' to make the 'shun' sound, CK at the end of words, because just K isn't enough, GH and PH instead of just a simple F, and some words spelled completely different from how they actually sound, like 'colonel', which is probably the worst case. Ironic how one of the most spoken languages ever has some of the worst spelling conventions
@BigDogJang0 The "gh" sound was actually pronounced differently before it's more conventional use in modern English. Words like cough, laugh, enough, and brought are all synonymous with their German and Dutch cognates where the spelling and etymology is very similar. Enough (Ger = Genug); Laugh (Ger = Lach); Brought; (Ger = Bracht); etc. ;) And words that use "ph" are generally words absorbed from Greek or Latin into the Germanic languages.
I have just found this awesome poster, this poster shows our early English heroes from the 'Adventus Saxonum'499 AD and warband leaders Hengist and Horsa, through to King Harold and Hereward 'the Wake' ,all depicted against the backdrop of a dramatic cliff side setting. and below a corresponding description, Little has been done to make ourselves or our children proud of our own English heroes. This poster puts that right at last. you can get it at wyrdart (.) co (.) uk <remove brackets.
And then, two more dictionaries came along: One is white and lavender, the other's bright yellow and deep red. Both were founded by a chicken.
