tsdobbi, What a foolish person. When animals kill, it is instinctual, as some are carnivores and need certain nutrients. Sometimes animals kill to defend themselves or their young. As humans, we are omnivores....we do not neccessarily NEED meat. Animals kill based on instinct, and what they need. Yes, they suffer, yes it's sad, but we as humans can find other options,,, so why not!

That's one of the reasons I don't fish anymore. I still eat fish. I'm not a vegetarian or anything. But people always say that a fish's mouth is hard and has no feeling in it. The problem is that a lot of times a fish will swallow a hook, and then you're yanking him out of the water by his guts. Tell me that don't hurt!

I really like fish, I have them as pets and become really sad when one gets sick or dies. I certainly wouldn't fry them up to eat. It is not cruel if a bear eats a fish since a bear cannot be expected to perform agriculture, open large wallmart/tesco stores with various choices of vegetables. A bear scavenges and hunts to survive and has no secondary option. Humans have a developed society with agriculture, marketing and most importantly- A CHOICE! A human can survive healthily with veggie food. If ur in a jungle starving, eat fish, snakes, rabbits or whatever by all means, that is the vegetarian logic.
Yes, there are many people who eat fish and claim to be vegetarians. This is because in some regions of the world fish is considered an agrarian product. They believe the fresh fish is grown by them(in a way it is). That's what i think I heard anyway. Officially however, they are meat eaters and not vegetarians. Not even meat eaters, I guess we should call them fish eaters.
scientists also say that fish have too small of a brain to feel pain...they do however react to pressure. when fishing, you will notice that if you give the fish slack, they don't even notice that they have a hook in their mouth. they only react when you put pressure on the fish and reel him in. in other words...don't worry

actually harvesting fish can be good for alot of lakes and streams.. for example my lake is filled with walleye and the perch population has significantly fell due to the walleye feeding on the perch. the lake has a 0 limit to walleye but recently the government has introduced a tag system for walleye. hopefully the perch populations can rebound all in all...selective harvest is a good thing...not to mention that fish are very healthy to eat and is good for your brain

It's interesting that a good many people, in the USA at least, are appalled by the puppy mill industry. Maybe not enough to actually DO anything about it, but they certainly look aghast and/or indignant when confronted with it. Yet, they have no problem with animals being tortured within the factory farming industry. They happily pile pork chops on their plates with no thought to how the pig suffered. The conditions in factory farming facilities are no less horrific than those in puppy mills.
So why is it acceptable to treat one type of non-human animals with such flagrant disregard but not acceptable to treat another type of animals the same? How do people compartmentalize like that? Is it just that dogs are cuter than chickens and cows or something equally shallow? I don't know.

That's one of the reasons I don't fish anymore. I still eat fish. I'm not a vegetarian or anything. But people always say that a fish's mouth is hard and has no feeling in it. The problem is that a lot of times a fish will swallow a hook, and then you're yanking him out of the water by his guts. Tell me that don't hurt!

I really like fish, I have them as pets and become really sad when one gets sick or dies. I certainly wouldn't fry them up to eat. That said, though, I very much enjoy eating wild fish every once in a while, and I'm very grateful to them for being so delicious and healthy. Double standards, I know, but that's life.

You never saw her dripping with jewels or for that matter ever even dressed up. It wasn't her thing. Family and love was.

It is not cruel if a bear eats a fish since a bear cannot be expected to perform agriculture, open large wallmart/tesco stores with various choices of vegetables. A bear scavenges and hunts to survive and has no secondary option. Humans have a developed society with agriculture, marketing and most importantly- A CHOICE! A human can survive healthily with veggie food. If ur in a jungle starving, eat fish, snakes, rabbits or whatever by all means, that is the vegetarian logic.

Yes, there are many people who eat fish and claim to be vegetarians. This is because in some regions of the world fish is considered an agrarian product. They believe the fresh fish is grown by them(in a way it is). That's what i think I heard anyway. Officially however, they are meat eaters and not vegetarians. Not even meat eaters, I guess we should call them fish eaters.

scientists also say that fish have too small of a brain to feel pain...they do however react to pressure. when fishing, you will notice that if you give the fish slack, they don't even notice that they have a hook in their mouth. they only react when you put pressure on the fish and reel him in. in other words...don't worry

actually harvesting fish can be good for alot of lakes and streams.. for example my lake is filled with walleye and the perch population has significantly fell due to the walleye feeding on the perch. the lake has a 0 limit to walleye but recently the government has introduced a tag system for walleye. hopefully the perch populations can rebound all in all...selective harvest is a good thing...not to mention that fish are very healthy to eat and is good for your brain

I'm a little confused what the goal is here (seriously).
Every day, millions of fish are bitten in half and swallowed alive by whales, sharks, and other fish. MILLIONS. I'm sure that is also very painful.
Are we to stop that as well? I don't see how one can stop the vast majority of "fish suffering". By comparison, mankind does very little to the world's fish population.
Any ideas? I'm willing to listen.

It's interesting that a good many people, in the USA at least, are appalled by the puppy mill industry. Maybe not enough to actually DO anything about it, but they certainly look aghast and/or indignant when confronted with it. Yet, they have no problem with animals being tortured within the factory farming industry. They happily pile pork chops on their plates with no thought to how the pig suffered. The conditions in factory farming facilities are no less horrific than those in puppy mills.

organic is a preference- but since not always available or affordable- it's not a must. this has nothing to do with the definition of veganism though. Veganic organic gardening is an ideal- (gardening without manure- & considering all the living organisms) if that was what u meant? when it becomes readily available that's what I'll get. Id like my own garden too. But now I do what I can- what's possible in my situation. That's what veganism is about. There's no "must", only choices.

This is BS, if you are to criticize people for killing fish, you might as well criticize the entire food chain. I live in southern Alaska, and every day we see Eagles snatch salmon out of our streams with their talons, pull out their eyes and dissect them while they are still alive and flapping.
Before you accuse humans of being cruel, observe what happens to those fish when they are being prayed on in the wild, and maybe you will find that it's not as bad as it seems.

we dont have to protect most insects because they take good care of themselves. but then again humans dont exploit them as much like they do with cows, chickens, fish, pigs etc. If they were to disappear from nature maybe they'd get more respect- I dont find them especially cute- but I won't step on one on purpose either- or use products containing insects. Veganism means respect for all animals-regardless of their cuteness factor, or their size. That's not really going overboard, is it?

im sorry, luvsirpaul. it's just that i know many idiots who use that as an argument and they're completely serious about it. if an animal doesnt speak english, then it cant feel pain. or their pain simply doesnt matter.
