@NasaNerdAlert yes it "popped" on and off that's one of the reasons why I had to put the vent holes in the sides, otherwise I would have suffocated... lol
That is awesome. I wanted to make one (not Apollo era) and had no idea how to go about the helmet. The acrylic globe thingies were a great idea, I'll try that... Thanks for posting these videos! :)
Most places that I've seen which sell globes of this size only have them with holes in the 5-6" diameter range, which is far too small for an adult's head to fit through. Did you cut the neck hole to be larger? How did you keep the acrylic from cracking?
@markt1964 and @redCat777 - To cut the neck hole, I used the box it shipped in as a jig then marked a wider neck opening with a sharpie. I used a dremmel with a cutting wheel set at the lowest speed. Acryllic when it heats up will 'melt' more than it will 'cut'. It took multiple passes along the same line until I scored it deep enough to penetrate all the way through, then I just snapped it off where the blobs of melted acryllic reconnected across my cut
so, I can't find a globe light that has a wide enough opening to put my head thru, did you saw the hole bigger for that as well? This is really cool by the way
@Finnstudios --- Oh, I get it now, you are one of those people who don't understand it's a Halloween costume. I won 150 bucks in an online contest with this homemade costume, had my picture on the front page of the newspaper, and was a finalist in the Conan O'Brien Halloween Contest. So, I think it was good enough for Halloween, but you are right, it was not good enough to fool anyone at mission control..
@Seven, I used a dremmel with a cutting wheel attachment. First I'd use a sharpie to mark the line I wanted to follow. Then I'd cut about a 1/2 inch smaller than my estimate. I had to make multiple passes to get it to go all the way through as the thickness varies. The jig I used to hold the sphere while I cut it was the box it came in crammed with crumpled newspapers. This allowed me to spin it but also allowed enough friction to hold it steady.
I like the idea of gold window tint but again 100% authenticity was not the goal of this Halloween costume, it was more the spirit of an Apollo suit in the end. Also, Would you experiment with tint on the only globe you could get? I wouldnt... :)
For anyone who wants to buy the helmet, you can go to Amazon or 1000bulbs. They both have the acrylic globes. I recommend using a 16", it's much closer to actual size.
I made the helmet from an acryllic streetlight globe, (Amazon) black felt, white denim, 2 sink strainers, a piece of foam (to keep it from rattling on my head), 1 tap light, velcro, white scotch tape, white duct tape, spray project glue, double sided sticky tape.
hello i am making a costume for my son for school project and your video is just awesome could you please tell where to get the globe and how much it cost please
Did the helmet actually connect with the neck ring on the painters suit?

This is pretty awesome. The only changes I would make, are to the helmet. I would add more cloth to give it a thicker appearance.

@seeit360 I didn't mean to offend, you did a good job.

@Finnstudios No offense was taken, trust me, but most of the comments I get are from NASA groupies, who think I was making it to go into space. :)

Silly question, I know, but what tool did you use to cut the streetlight globe? Was it a band saw of some kind?
Thanks!
