So awesome seeing this video, I was on the USS Midway in Yokosuka Japan from 89 till she left in 91. AWESOME Ship, awesome crew, and Japan was an amazing place to live.
Thanks so much for this video !! It brings back many wonderful memories of the 3 1/2 years I spent on the Midway as a boiler engineer and my party times in Yokosuka lol. I plan on visiting her in San Diego with my kids. Thanks for doing your part in keeping MIDWAY MAGIC alive.
OMG, my husband was one of decommissioning crew. I remembered that day very well, my kids and my parents were there too when Midway left Yokokuka Base. We visited Midway museum in San Diego later and took a cruise to Mexico with old crews in 2005.
I can't thank you enough for sharing this historic video footage. Midway and Yokosuka was my home away from home from 1986-88.
Of the 4 carriers I served aboard, Midway was my first and by far the best of them all. She had the best crew and the best air wing, and we worked really well together to get the job done. I truly believe that was part of the "Midway Magic".
I hope someday to get down to San Diego to walk her decks and passage ways again. I'm so thankful that they didn't scrap her.
Hey, no problem! I was a kid when it left Yokosuka, then when we moved to Bremerton, WA a year later, it was the first thing I saw when we arrived...it was a huge surprise becuase I wasn't expecting to see it there.
i never served on the Midway i served on the Coral Sea unfortunatly they scrap her but at least they kept the Midway so i hope one day to walk her decks and feel a little part of my ship is still alive tru my sister ship
@Eagle13Eric You will love the midway in San Diego. I have been there twice. She is all cleaned up and looks fantastic. I can't imagine what that would be like for you. Walking around a ship you actually served on!! WOW.
@Eagle13Eric@Eagle13Eric I was born in Yokosuka and unfortunately remember none of it because I was so little when we left. My dad was on the midway also for quite sometime. I must have been a year old when we left. I am now 21. Time flies. I was fascinated to see this video because I haven't had the chance to visit Japan yet and I need to. I saw the Midway in San Diego this past summer and it made me feel so at home, and I'm not really sure how, but I can't wait to go to Yokosuka someday
@ilovegod89 I hope you will have your wish (to go back to Yokosuka) someday. I'm sure much has changed since i was stationed there... but hopefully you will get a realistic glimpse of what your Dad and I experienced while living there. Japan is a fascinating country. The majority of Japanese citizens were very honorable hosts to us sailors and i am forever grateful to them for the kindness, generosity, and integrity that they showed me and my shipmates. Good luck in achieving your goals...peace.
@Eagle13Eric I only served on one, and this was the one. I got to see her when I was in San Diego earlier this year. I didn't get a chance to do the tour, but I will be headed back there this summer, and it's going to be the first thing I do after I check into the hotel.
I was on there for Desert Storm, the fire, and the Pinatubo evolution.
@cubdukat Probably my biggest regret (re: my time in the Navy) was that i transferred back to the states because i thought i was "in love" with an American girl I met in Tokyo. I was young and dumb and allowed my hormones to dictate my decisions. The camaraderie that I had (while on Midway) and mistakenly chose to sacrifice was far more valuable than the 3 yrs. I spent with this girl. In hind sight, I should have re-upped, stayed in Japan, and left the fickle girl... live and learn lol ; )

This was my "home" for over three years. We could, and we did, out fly and out sail any super carrier in the fleet. This was MIDWAY MAGIC!!!

I rode aboard this ship as a child, on the "Tiger Cruise". I was in Yokosuka in the late eighties/early nineties. Oh how I miss you.

Posted below, echo your sentiments about the scraping. A lucky bunch we are to have walked those decks.
