I really like Rick Steves, and normally he's very good. But I was disappointed that he never learned how to pronounce Tallinn properly. I was also disappointed that he never showed us the REAL Estonia, which is found outside of Old Town Tallinn. Why didn't he go to Tartu, Parnu, Haapsalu, Saaremaa? If you only visit Old Town, you haven't seen Estonia! He should have devoted the 30 minutes to Estonia and split it with Finland.
actually I'm surprised to see matryoshka doll costumes walking the streets of Tallinn. It's just too random, the only reason for there being a market for these dolls in Estonia is that foreigners are to ignorant to see the difference between Estonian and Russian culture and buy them because they are near Russia and think these are part of Estonian culture aswell. It's like selling Swiss knives in Munich - they are from a close place, but have nothing to do with the local culture.
Talinn was one of my favorite stops on a tour through Scandinavia, St Petersburg and then south, a few years ago. I wandered the olde town streets at night and felt that I had traveled back in time.
Rick, great video as usual. One question, do Karel and Simon ever hold seminars on videography for people going on vacation. With the advent of tiny, hand-held video cameras, many with 1080p capabilities, I think it would be cool to get a primer from your guys on the best techniques to capture quality footage while traveling.
Nice presentation, as always! Free Market Tallinn is where people of the Nanny State Nordics go to drink and shop -- especially shop for alcohol, which the Nordics tightly regulate.
Yes, I know, some see Estonia as part of the Nordics, but I see it as central European. Nevertheless, as w/ Finland, Estonia supported Germany's steadfast effort to save Europe from Ilya Ehrenberg's genocidal Bolshevik onslaught.
Unfortunately, Estonia was not successful in WW2. But, now the economy rises. Bravo!
