  • yay p0rn hider!

  • What's the music in the background?

  • @PianoScience Goodnight and Go by Imogen Heap

  • i have Lion installed, and i miss Spaces and Expose so hard, i find them way better than Mission Control :S

  • ppl are just jealous. can't stand the fact that apple is the best :O

  • 0:18 I see WoW icon :-)

  • lol. "A space for play! So you can play WoW and... ahem have you heard of our new feature Stacks?!"

  • windows 7 e o melhor sistema operativo

  • I don't understand why anybody would prefer this over exposé

  • "Only in Leopard"

oohhh i remember those days when we all thought that there'd be Illuminous instead than Aqua LOL

  • I hate that windows don't have it inside XP or Vista.

  • There is an addon called "Desktops", but it's primitive and it sucks.

  • @1337sweden they do. its called desktops and its been around. theres also a good client called dexpot which does spaces and an expose feature.

  • "Only in Leopard"?

This was available in Unix window managers for years.

  • hahaha, somebody voted down your comment. I think you've ruffled the feathers of the fanboys

  • You are correct, and I've been using them since the early 90s. It's not a true statement. That being said, the implementation in OS X is bar none the best I've used, and every time I move to a Linux, Solaris, or Windows machine, I long to have Spaces back.

  • @outzider You know Linux has been doing this for years, right?

  • @crispyfritters I'm quite aware. I'm also aware that other *nix have been doing it for longer than that. I'm saying that OS X's implementation is currently the best one out there, but the compiz implementation is skirting on the edge of overtaking it. :)

  • @crispyfritters nobody is saying that macs did it first, it's just a first time in mac os. phones had "multitasking" also before iOS 4, but iOS 4 does it the best. as spaces do.

  • It is easier to do it in Linux, and it has more ways to do it (3Dcube). What were virtual desktops in 1985? Why didn't they do it earlier? Offcourse , Linux is opensource.. "Let's take it and make money on it." I think that this is disgusting.

  • You better watch your mouth. CDE made virtual desktops in the early 90s, BEFORE LINUX DID. What is CDE? A destkop environment made specifically for UNIX. What is Leopard? UNIX. What is Linux not? UNIX. Therefore OS X has more of a right to use multiple desks than Linux because of their UNIX base.

  • LOL. geek wars.

  • More like me raping noobs at their own game.

  • Comment removed

  • "Only in Leopard"

Apple loves to lie, don't they?

  • they sure do

  • They are saying its only in Leopard and not earlier versions.

  • Go Imogen Heap! :D

  • "Only In Leopard".... Wow, now I wonder which features of KDE 4.2 or Compiz Apple will steal next...

  • Way to go Apple, catching up with OS features Linux had a decade ago...

  • I never said linux had it first, so maybe you should learn to read before you tell people to watch what they say.

  • Let me refraise then. Way to go Linux, after a decade you finally caught up with... oh wait Linux is still missing 90% of what all modern OSs these days have. My bad.

    /trollin

  • all you need is sPACes;-)

  • go apple

  • looove this song and mac!

  • "Say Goodnight And Go" by Imogen Heap...

  • How simple and cool can this get.

  • lol i bet they acctually used like a MacBook pro to shoot the video.

if they did this on macbook it would be pretty laggy

  • no way it never laggs in a macbook because im using one right now with spaces

  • I use 9 spaces. 1 for general chat and email. 2 for browsers. 3 for terminals. 4 for music stuff. 5 for Textmate and other coding stuff. 6 for SVN and other log viewers. 7 for Photoshop and other graphics stuff. 8 for WoW. 9 for VNC to my office PC.

  • spaces is stolen from desktop manager which was ten times betters but since I upgraded to leopard it does not work

  • spaces is stolen from linux. Linux had it a while ago.

  • For one thing, linux doesn't have spaces, because it's

    1) a kernel, not a windowing system (you meant "X"), and

    2) They're not called spaces and work differently.

The general idea is the same, however, and predates at least back to 1985 when Andy Hertzfeld made the "Switcher" (for Mac).

  • its not called "X" either... either X11 or Xorg.

whatever mac calls it is not an argument about it

    being a different feature.

  • Of course, I'm not making the argument that calling something by a different name makes it different, that would be silly.

My point was that the features are related (both are implementations of virtual desktops), but not identical, so this is a hard case to just scream theft.

By the way: Is there anything that the Windows and GNU/linux camps have ever invented instead of copied and improved from Xerox, Apple and BSD (and possibly others)?

  • Yes, useful window managers for example (like fluxbox or awesome wm) and probably many other things. But if not, why would be it a problem? You think, the knowledge is only for comapnies not for everyone? If an idea, a solution is really good, everyone _should_ copy and use it.

  • Of course I'm not saying information is just for companies, this can be seen by the inclusion of BSD.

And yes, copying and improving a design is good, otherwise we would be in the stone age.

My point however was that the MS and GNU/Linux teams are quite focused on improving and extending rather than finding new solutions to problems, like Xerox (PARC anyone?), Apple, and BSD do, so screaming theft about 'spaces' is quite a misinformed and altogether silly thing to do.

  • ROFL its not stealing when Apple steals Xerox's virtual desktop concepts or interface. When Apple does it, its called borrowing, innovation, or creating "NEW" solutions. LAWL Thanks dude, haven't laughed that hard in awhile.

  • It looks like you misunderstood my post.

    Let me summarize:

    1. Multiple people here claim Apple 'stole' spaces from linux.

    2. My reply to this is that Apple did not 'steal spaces' because they already had virtual desktops back in 1985, when the word 'linux' did not even exist (and, again, linux itself is not relevant here, X is).

And now for you especially punktdawg, notice that I do not claim other parties did steal spaces or that Apple has not stolen anything else.

  • "only in leopard"? Only xwindows has had it forever...

  • hell ya man fucking apple stole all that stuff they got from Linux just like Microsoft vista

  • Please realize that while you may have seen this first on linux and later on Mac, virtual desktops have been around at Apple for more than 22 years.

Back then, linus hadn't even started about copying the BSD design and calling it linux.

  • Only in leopard? B$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xD

  • Rip-off of Compiz fusion! Also, this is only effective with Mac Pro.

  • ...and ive come to reality. ITS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR NOT ENOUGH POWER!

  • Very true. For the same price, I can get a more powerful windows machine, and put linux on it and destroy both Mac and Windows.

  • just like what i did

  • thats too cool... im now thinking about a mac again...

  • how come microsoft couldn't think of any of this?

  • They need to be as different from Macs as possible, which means fumbling up the stuff they steal from OS X, and leaving out anything important or meaningful.

  • i tried this at a mac store and it confused me... there were like 3,000 spaces and none of them had anything on them.

  • Uhh... you can only create up to 16 spaces. And you can configure the amount by rows and columns(say, 2*2 or 3*2, etc), so it's pretty easy to set up less spaces in case too many of them confuse you. It's quite a neat feature mind you.

  • Linux have programs like this. Compiz-Fusion but Mac Os is good very nice system

  • @Faghill1994 Im used to using Spaces under Mac Os. I also have a notebook with Linux, but I am unsucessfull at using spaces there. There is a similar icon on the left "linux dock" but I havent figure out how to use, can you help me?

  • "only on leopard" my ass!!!

  • Linux user right? Yeah, that's exactly what I thought when I saw Spaces previewed a while ago.

  • WoW represent!

  • i am trying to get spaces to work but its not on my desktop

  • sorry i mean its not on Dock so idk where to find it

  • First off you need to go into System Preferences and turn it on (its under Expose and Spaces or something like that) and then all you need to do is to go into your Applications folder, find the App 'Spaces' and drag it to your dock.

  • System preferences ---> Exposé & Spaces ---> Go to spaces and enable them

  • and no, I never said the spaces concept existed on mac for the first time, of course not.. And yes, I know you can, just let us enjoy our first "Intel years", it's really been great having the best of both worlds;)

  • Yes, well said, "many of the things". But I think you gave a bad example with chess. Have you checked out the similarities between macs version and windows version? they are too many and too obvious, and i just cant figure out why.. was it so difficult to intruduce some changes..?

  • Pretty cool, very similar to Compiz-Fusion's Expo plugin, though. Not that it's a bad thing, really.

  • i would say very bad. first people cut up microsoft for copying mac, and now mac's are copying linux. at least microsoft has been copying off it's own league (proprietary software)

  • Agreed. I personally think the whole "OMG VISTA COPIED OSX" argument is stupid anyways (as its the end product that counts), but I dislike the hypocritical/ignorant accusations of many (not all) Mac users.

  • Funny how he says "only on leopard" at the end.

  • Yes, I also think that it's the final product that counts, cause everything in computers world is based on something someone else has done.. But one thing is to use a general concept like spaces (that existed on mac a long time ago, in Desktop Manager, for example) and include it on the new OS,

  • and other thing is to copy things ust as they are, like vista has done with some stuff.. but then again, everything comes from somewhere, and has long as I can run any OS I want on parallels with my macbook, i'll be just fine, and we'll all be friends;)

  • True but one can consider many of the things in Vista to be "copies" of general ideas. Chess, live thumbnails, live searching (which I actually dislike the idea of in some ways), etc. are rather general ideas. Also, keep in mind on my PC, I can run any OS that I could on a Mac; it would merely be illegal for me to run certain ones (aka Mac OSX) XD.

  • Also, do you have any sources that the concept behind "spaces" existing on Macs before it existed elsewhere? From what I know Amiga was the first to implement the concept in 1985 and the X Window Manager has long provided support for multiple/virtual desktops.

  • i'll buy the new mac only if it comes

    with quality games

  • Then it's good thing that gaming on the mac is starting to take off.

  • who cares if it came from other systems. If you have it, you have it. It still has a different style than beryl. Windows doesn't have anything similar to this...

  • There have been 3rd party programs that provide multiple desktop features for a while though they aren't near as good as Beryl/Compiz Fusion.

  • i agree

  • Haha, Vista doesn't even have spacing. You're just mad 'cause the mac has completely beat the pc in every single way.

-It's cheaper (it really is now)

    -It's faster

    -It's more secure

-It's more advanced, and yet easier to use

    -It works

  • Vista does not have spaces at all! Haha, what a dumb ass.

  • hahahahah lol

    wheres the games!!!

  • lol, we are talking about spaces here. Way to debate, noob.

    Children play games with consoles.

  • Warcraft was running in one of he spaces.

  • Battle of OSzzz.. I imagine MMA fighters fight for their favorite OS, I bet all computer nuts would buy UFC tickets. Linux freaks, Windows Nerds, and Mac Geeks would be sitting there yelling.

  • this is not new. linux os have this kind of feature..

  • But they are not user friendly and are still in mostly in testing.

  • Mostly in testing? Are you stupid?

And there are Linux distros that are just as user friendly as OSX. It's all what you're used to.

  • I've tried many Linux distros like Unbuntu, Mandrake and Suse. All I found lacked driver support for my hardware and having to open the console type in shell scripts and enter in as a root user just to install my graphics drivers is not something I think of as user friendly. Also most of the software available that runs on linux natively is either in beta or lacks support.

  • You had to log in as root to install video drivers? Not in the last 6 months you haven't!

  • when does leopard come out?

  • The 26th of October.

  • "only in leopard" LOL

  • And you've been an asshole since birth.

  • this is a cheap ripoff of beryl for linux, or yod'm 3 for widows

  • Oh, shut up, linux fanboys.

It's kind of getting to the point where you guys say everything sucks. I personally like Linux, but people like you tend to sway me off.

  • actually i don't like Linux but still, apple is talking about how vista copied them while they're copying linux

  • "vista copied them while they're copying linux"

Transparency was in OS X but in 2001. I'm not sure if Linux had transparency, or even Beryl for that matter, but it IS an innovation from Apple..

The only thing I see here that you can debate is if Mac "copied" Spaces. Although, spaces was on os x tiger as a add on..

Also, OS X does it using 3D mode something that does NOT come standard in Linux. This must be an add on. This is very debatable.

  • So what if spaces was in Tiger? it has been in Linux since the early 90s.

Compiz does come standard in the current version of Ubuntu, you just have to enable it.

  • Multiple workspaces has been on linux since the 90's.

  • exactly. So has UNIX. And what surprises me is it took till now, considering the fact the Mac OS has had a UNIX core since 2000, too add multiple workspaces

  • noob

  • thats the lamest thing i seen. If i was playing world of warcraft i wouldnt be writting a email at the same time.

  • your lame for playing world of warcraft.

  • i dont but that was a bad review its a gimic (btw i play runescape lol but i quit till i get a job-.-) also im getting a job to by a macbook

  • Well they're making a point. Can YOU make custom email, edit Movies, and Play WoW at the same time? WOOT

  • ummm i can do that on windows already

  • hahahahahahahaha. funny.

  • It's called multi-tasking.

I'm not going to get into an argument here, flame all you want.

  • meh
