Good grief I forgot how much I loved Laura Branigan's voice. I actually became really depressed and felt like someone punched me in the gut when I heard she had passed away. Her physical self may be gone but her voice and music will live forever
Gloria is a classic That will live on forever!! I never even heard Manchester's song and I am sure will never hear on the radio!! And who was a "one hit wonder" They are all great singers and had great careers. But at least give it to a song that was played on the radio!
Melissa got the award since she was snubbed from winning a Grammy for Don't Cry Out Loud which became a classic! The song was a departure from her heart and soul approach to her music. It was a great pop song that was a blessing and a curse for her. A very underated singer/songwriter.
That was truely a competitive moment in Grammy history! All great ladies!
@hairdisc Yeah, its a transfer from an old beta tape to VHS to a digital mini tape to MPEG... if I'd known back then how much fun it would be to see old recordings I'd have taken better care! Anyway, even though the Grammy voters do tend to reward for past performance, I think Melissa's song and performance were the best of the bunch -- though Gloria would have been a good choice too.
@markdc20005 I would have voted for Laura. Melissa's song was good but smothered in tech effects. I think she won as payback for losing for "Don't Cry Out Loud," even though Donna Summer should have won over Dionne's schmaltzy song. The big upset to me was that Barbra Streisand was snubbed a nom for her bravura version of "Memory," which was a big album hit not a singles hit.
At the time. Gloria was dismissed as a Donna summer imitation. It wasn't until Laura started getting more hits that the critics became more kind to her.
I think she should have been nominated and won the following year for "Self Control", by far her best performance.
Man that was an extremely tough call. All those songs and ladies are winners in my book, maybe they should have given them all a plaque that read "Great Job, Ladies!"
YEAH I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU THE GRAMMYS OSCARS EMMY AWARDS ARE NOTHING THERE ARE NO GOOD ENTERTAINERS AND SINGERS ANYMORE ITS ALL COMMERCIAL SUCCESS
WOW! Donna, Laura, Linda, Olivia and Melissa? Some of my favorite ladies, this was when REAL MUSIC won Grammys, now all the crap we have is Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas :(
It was the best SONG and vocal delivery out of the lot. Then again she never had any other song that came close to the brilliance of "You should hear". ONJ, Laura and Linda were all better when you look at a 10 year period. ONJ being the best by FAR.
Laura Branigan Should've Won, 4 Grammy Nominations But Never A Single Win, And 'Gloria' Wasn't Even Her Biggest Single, Nor Was The Album It Was Featured On.
After Heart Attack all went down big time for her, left the record industry for some years to have a child and even when she returned back she lost MCA records, her hits stopped, and went from record to record company,in fact i thought Geffen would bring her up high again, nope.Oh well, she still remains one of our favorite when she sings the old stuff to us.
Gloria deserved it, but I think that You Should Hear How She Talks About You was the second-best song. OLJ was nominated solely on merit imho, Heart Attack was godawful....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wow, I remember this mediocre song.. barely. Pretty awful choice. Manchester's song was the worst of the lot along with that embarrasing Heart Attack song by Olivia Newton.
Laura' Gloria clearly the best followed by Linda's Get Closer.
Juice Newton ruled the charts during this time....She should have won. She was not only having pop hits, but also country hits as well. "Angel of the morning, Queen of hearts, Sweetest thing, Loves been a little bit hard on me, Break it to me gently. All pop/country hits.
yeah....look at her chart history. she had alot more hit singles during this time than Melissa Manchester. Juice did receive the best female country vocalist that night. I love Melissa as well, but Juice had quite a bit more chart success during this time frame.
dont underestimate this song.True , gloria seems to be the obvious critical choice 20 years later, But i was around then and i really remember well the huge impact this song had and the video. This era was the pinnacle for creating popular and sentimental experiences and this lady became extremly famous just by this one thing.
Omg, look at Laura B. Laura, rest in peace. We miss you. She was such an underrated beauty. Those eyebrows, eyes and lips. Wow. I had such a crush on her. Love ya Laura. Thanks for brining so much happiness into my life as a child lipsynching to your records. :)

I think Laura's song has aged well while Melissa song is dated and nostalgic but it took 5 or more years to realize that fact. However, I have to say Patti Austin was the best female vocalist of 1982 but she sang duet with James Ingram of Quincy Jones compo with "Come to Me".
You can hear it from the audience when Gloria and Laura Brannigan were announced. I like all of them but I would have to give the Grammy to Laura Brannigan RIP Laura Thanks for the music
Whoever voted on this must have been smokin' some serious weed!
I'm the biggest Laura Branigan fan in the known universe, but I'd pick Juice Newton's song! (Sorry Laura.) I like Olivia and Linda too!
I have all of Laura's albums, and Gloria is far from being my favorite. Not that it's bad, but alot of Laura's songs are MUCH better, especially from Touch.
To me it's not so much Laura gave us Gloria, bit Gloria gave us Laura! :) :)
I know many have commented on how Laura was better deserved on the win. However, to look in hindsight, I consider this lineup of nominees to be giants. No lie, I have all five of these artist's greatest in my music library.
Linda Ronstadt should have been nominated for the the Get Closer album, the same way she won for Hasten Down the wind. Her Get Closer album was THE BEST pop vocal album released by a singer, as a whole. Technically, vocally, engineering, precision it was the best. If so, she would have won. However, they were all good nominees that year and all deserving
I saw this on t.v. when I was a kid, and I was upset Laura Branigan didn´t win, I knew all the others nominees, but Melissa E. I still don´t know who she is.

So sad that Laura Branigan didn't win... She deserved it! Her vocals on "Gloria" are much stronger than Melissa's vocals on "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," IMHO
The real female pop greats of the 80's were the following: Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, Pat Benatar, Donna Summer, Heart, Olivia Newton-John, the Go-Gos, Blondie, The Pretenders, Tina Turner, Joan Jett, Joan Armatrading. Cher, Bonnie Raitt, and the Bangles. You sitll hear their music on the radio and see it in the records stores.
And, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna paved the way for poorly behaved "divas" including Mariah & Whtiney. Although these 2 women had decent voices, both Whitney and Mariah's music and styles have been mostly bland, histrionic and forgettable. It's really a shame.
Yeah, justjackjordinjustin, you're right, it was a shame that only a few years later things did change for female pop vocalists. Cyndi Lauper came along and and sang and acted like an 8 year old clown, and Madonna came soon after and acted like Cyndi's little sister with a bad bleach job. Both of these women became greats in their own way, but only after many years of practice and maturity in order to improve their careers from their lousy beginnings.
Looking back performance wise, it probably should have gone to the Late Laura Branigan.. Oddly enough sounding similar to Donna Summer's alto voice in "Gloria"--but i think Melissa was a Clive Davis artist and i believe she was overlooked for "Don't Cry Out Loud" years before..Pat Benatar Was the Hottest at the time, but she was in the Rock field..Later:Tina Turner's comeback, Cyndi and a savvvy gal named Madonna.. Changed Everything!
Dude, you're not smart enough to know what you missed. These shows had talented artists who could perform live. Your generation's performers lip-synch, blab/rap, & need back-up dancers to get them through their performances. These shows' performers were gorgeous (Donna, Linda,Olivia etc) & talented. I'll take them over Christina, Britney, Mariah, Whitney, Justin, and any crappy rapper or hip-hop artist anyday.
why do linda and laura look like they're embarassed or somethin and laura got a long face here LOL not like the faces she sports on self-control appearances
ARGENTINA
Linda Ronstadt's "Get Closer" was totally under-rated and should have been an even bigger hit than it was. She was really fighting for her career in rock and pop music then, and at least she was nominated for a grammy. I like every single one of the nominees - LOVE Olivia, and was glad Manchester finally won something after all those years. But Laura Branigan deserved it.
Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer, Olivia Newton-John, and Melissa Manchester had been around for along time and still looked and sounded great, and were only in their early 30's. Its amazing how much more talented they were compared to the Mariahs, the Whitneys, the Britneys, the Jessicas and the Christinas. Pop music females are a sad lot nowadays.
Don't forget Juice! She continues to tour 100+ days a year, is releasing a Christmas album this year and won last year's online poll for winner of the "hit Me baby one more time" 80s competition.
Seeing all these nominees back then makes me realize just how BAD music is today. Take me back to the 80's! These ladies put out great music! Olivia looks sensational here.
That was such a rip off...Laura should have won. I really like all the nominees and songs, but Laura kicked the crap out of all of them. Such an iconic song and performance! I think more people remember "Gloria," rather than any of the others.
Actually that was when music was good...you should of been honored to have been able to of seen it. Maybe when you grow up you will live and learn. The singers represented here could far outshine any female vocalist today.
I have to agree (And I am not even a huge Laura fan...!) Gloria was a defining song of the 80s.. the others were catchy but didn't have the lasting impact Laura's song did. Plus she sang the heck out of it.
As much as I love Linda and she is one of my altime favorites...I have to agree with you. She was one of the best female vocalist then...God rest her soul.
Branigan should have won!

It's really a shame.
nrthdude1 4 years ago
Yeah, justjackjordinjustin, you're right, it was a shame that only a few years later things did change for female pop vocalists. Cyndi Lauper came along and and sang and acted like an 8 year old clown, and Madonna came soon after and acted like Cyndi's little sister with a bad bleach job. Both of these women became greats in their own way, but only after many years of practice and maturity in order to improve their careers from their lousy beginnings.

Laura must won it!

Changed Everything!

what the heck is that melissa song, she's even gettin helped by a guy doin the vocals .
gloria is the toughest song to sing of all the nominees and laura was the newest of em all. duh!!

I completely agree with you!!

OMG could that award show look anymore boring i'm glad i was born later because i would die watching that award show for 3 hours

Actually that was when music was good...you should of been honored to have been able to of seen it. Maybe when you grow up you will live and learn. The singers represented here could far outshine any female vocalist today.
nytbrd 4 years ago
Sorry...but it should have been Branigan's year.
blumaxjav 4 years ago
I have to agree (And I am not even a huge Laura fan...!) Gloria was a defining song of the 80s.. the others were catchy but didn't have the lasting impact Laura's song did. Plus she sang the heck out of it.
markdc20005 4 years ago
As much as I love Linda and she is one of my altime favorites...I have to agree with you. She was one of the best female vocalist then...God rest her soul.
