@EbClectic to call it crap would be discrediting the number of casualties claimed by the ship. and the amount of allied firepower it took to take it down [and still, apparently, the hull was relatively intact when it sunk. apparently it's own crew scuttled and abandoned her to avoid letting the Allies claim her and use it against them].
The allies' ships were formidable, yes, but the Bismarck had the advantage.
@RPGTKingpin actually there were at least 3 seperate penetrations of the main armor belt on Bismarck. All of her turrets were knocked out of action and at least half the 5 inch turrets have penetrations as well. Bismarck was already listing heavily when the crew set the scuttling charges. She was well on her way to the bottom. The only reason she didn't explode like hood is because the crew put the boilers out and the fire didn't reach the magaizine.
@LYinKansas 5 months ago I probably knew that. but at this point I've forgotten most of the information I knew about the Bismarck aside from the fact it was one of the most formidable warships of WWII :P
@RPGTKingpin Yeah I know I'm just saying she wasn't the end all be all. She was designed for commerce raiding with the firepower and armor to destroy escorting warships along with the convoy too. Fighting other battleships though was never part of the plan. The Royal Navy was just too damn big.
@mcintoshdev alot of the tech generated during WWII, Axis or Ally, resulted in notable technological advancements that led to us reaching the level we're at today.
the Nazis were horrible, I agree. but so were the Russians [in fact, they were WORSE than the Nazis. people just don't notice it because they're too distracted by the Holocaust], and every other major power in history, if you want to get technical. that is no reason to discredit them of the technological successes they produced.
@koop5365 nah. the incident that wrecked the rudder was a different battle. a while afterwards. IIRC, that blow was caused by a Swordfish Torpedo Bomber launched from the Ark Royal 2 days after the Hood was obliterated.
There was a WWII recreation party the other day in England. One guest dressed as a Nazi officer. The police were called and he was ' spoken to '. Are we just going to erase this period from history because it may cause offence? Future generations will ask "who did the allies fight against?". The reply "Erm, not sure. We have no record of that!!"
Question. I'm making a Diorama of a beach, and a dock for the PT 109 in 1:72 Scale. I'm going to make it look like the Pt Boat is resuplying. @MrSartak1977 I am a student of history. The Bismark was a great piece of machinery. So was the Tiger 2 and the Me262; however, they were used by men I disagree with strongly. That's why I'm glad it was sunk.
No wonder Hitler was reluctant to let her loose during the war- she was probably the most beautiful looking warship of the war in the Alantic. The pacific honours would have to go to the Yamato
Seas Fleet standard instead of the Nazi flag. Captain Hans Langsdorf (sp?) of the Graf Spee did exactly that. There was no love between many of the surface commands of the Kreigsmarine and the political organizations of Germany at the time since they were sent to sea unprepared for war and told their leader exactly that.
