Its amazing to see how much storm coverage has changed. Now they would have the helicopter up, and several trackers on it. Lot less hype with storms back then, I honestly think May 3, 1999 though terrible changed a lot in the way weather is handled on the air now, and that is a good thing
Close, but not quite. Mike went to KFOR in 92/93 (ironically replacing Wayne Shattuck, who hired Mike at KOCO) and was replaced by Rob Roseman initially, and then later Vince Miller (formerly of KFOR and The Weather Channel). Rick showed up in late '94.
Great stuff. Fascinating to see how severe weather was covered back in the day. That was an amazingly hi-resolution radar image of the hook echo in Canadian County... but such low-tech mapping software :) county lines and no towns labeled!
Imagine if that supercell were occurring in the same place today... they'd be flying helicopters near it (well, 4 and 9 would, at least) and going wall to wall.
The reason the hook shows so well is because it was right in the line of sight of the radar beam. It was also a very strong mesocyclone. The radar wasn't that bad, but it was old even for 1990.
well you do have a point there with payne.

@Momoftwinsplus1 Yes it is, but I like it a lot better if they didn't use helicopters.

@prcsouthwest Yes but he wasn't teamed up with David Payne & Jim Gardner yet, you can't have Freak out Four without them three together.

Mike Morgan left KOCO Channel 5 to go to KFOR NewsChannel 4 in the 1993/1994 timeframe, and was replaced by Rick Mitchell.

If I remember, this is the same night that Stillwater got sideswiped by a tornado.
