@trainmaster844 the diesel was for when #90 would start pulling up a hill, to give assistance. They didn't want to put to much wear on the engine by single handedly pulling it. The diesel only offered assistance when nessesary.
@PereMarquette1223 - I truly understand what 8618 was for, but the original question I was responding to was asked why there wasn't a caboose on the rear of the train.
I don't see a need for a caboose - since the diesel is bringing up the rear, they've got a crew to help #90 and check the train if any faults occur. No need for a caboose.
13 freight cars and 4.... Centerbeams?!?! I had no idea centerbeams could make that turn... @PereMarquette1223 thanks for the info on the freight yard, had no idea that was coming :P
@indie1361 She's been down for a federal mandated rebuild for quite some time, she's currently in pieces. I've seen vids of the Strasbug railroad that shows her cab out in the yard.
It is really interesting to actually see SRR haul freight! I've known this since my first visit in 1978 but never actually saw it, other than in photos. A rather impressive freight for a line only 4 1/2 miles long! There's actually enough room at the end of the line in Strasburg to park that long thing? Great catch!
@DuesyJ29 Actually, she did pull trains with that many cars back in Loveland, CO. However, the cars now are almost 20-30 ft. longer. She would've had a hard time pulling by herself, especially on that grade.
@PereMarquette1223 Locomotives got bigger and more powerful over the years, and that enabled them to pull larger cars. Putting your product into a larger car rather than putting it into many small ones was cheaper, so freight cars got longer.
@TVRM610 Strasburg is building a freight yard next to their passenger yard to accomodate all of the increased freight traffic. Lancaster County gave them 1 million in funds.
@Strasburgfanatic It's not that hard if you know what you're doing. Plus, the 90 has a wide firebox that differs from let's say a keyhole "narrow" firebox in which the latter, from personal experience, is much more challenging to fire correctly.

Good stuff, the only thing I want to know is how many traffic violations did you commit beating the train from carpenters to fairview? But seriously you're always putting out the best, keep it up
Great video! 90 looks great with the new headlight style. Also the dark coat of paint looks really sharp. The stack talk was great in this video the revamping they did definitely helped! Thanks for sharing!
High quality footage... beautiful morning light... freshly overhauled 90 hauling the most it has in a long time. There's no reason why anyone shouldn't like this video
Nice to see a steam engine pulling freight!

@WDI2008 - They had diesel #8618 on the back - no need for one.

# 90 could pull that on her own, why did they put the switcher on?
ELMSLines 6 months ago
@ELMSLines 90 can only haul about 1500 tons the train was over 1500.
LycoValleyRRFan 6 months ago
@ELMSLines Also there is a grade too.
LycoValleyRRFan 6 months ago
How did you find out about this freight run. Do they announce it on twitter, facebook? Even one with the switcher as power would be rare.
indie1361 6 months ago
Those same tank cars were sitting at Strasburg when I went there last weekend.

See the old lady walking her bike up the hill at 8:34, imagine what she thought when she saw #90 go by and it had freight cars behind it.
PereMarquette1223 6 months ago
Who delivers the freight to the siding along the Amtrak's northeast corridor? Does NS have trackage rights?
PereMarquette1223 6 months ago
How do you like that. At 10:25, the last two hoppers are UP hoppers.
PereMarquette1223 6 months ago
Man, you can tell #90 is giving it all she's got.

Nothing better than seeing a steam locomotive doing what it was built to do.

#90's working all out in this. That diesel was there to keep her from wearing her self out. that grade is a real piece of work.

steam pulls freight once again. awesome. stupid diesels..... this is railroading.

would have been great if that purple piece of junk dodge wouldn't have been parked in your video at Carpenters

At 3:15, that would've been awesome if an Amtrak train would've gone flying through

Should of left that diseaseal at home. 90 coulda pulled that on herself.
