@hnksnw says, "It's just throne out there, it's not melodic or anything. It's just rambling notes. That's why I never liked bluegrass."
Your comments show your complete and utter ignorance of music of ANY kind. This planet is filled with angry people, (who can't spell) ranting at others on Youtube sites, TRYING to put them down, so they can feel better about themselves.
BTW, if the ice pick in the ears don't work, try a rapidly, rotating, red, hot ratchet wrench up your rosy, red rectum.
you mean "thrown out there"? lol. you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. you dont have to like bluegrass, but if you are any kind of musician, there is no way you can just gloss over the skill needed to pull off those runs.
It's not melodic ? You must really get a battery for you hearing aide! Look at all of the hundreds of old fiddle tunes ? Those are not melodic ? Come on. You must be some young kid that has no musical knowledge.
Oh what a man you are. Did I touch a nerve because you know nothing about melody's ? You are clueless as to what music is if you think bluegrass fiddle tunes have no melody.
@hnksnw Sort of like when you throw out the wrong spelling of words? I hate when letters just get THROWN around. And I'm sure if you had Bryan's ear, you wouldn't think that. Check out when he plays on Mark O' Conner's 30 year retrospective. If that shaz isn't melodic, then I don't know what is.
Look up chris thile and bryan sutton, then decision at gladyfork. Thile and Flinner are two of the smoothest mandolin players I have ever heard. ENJOY
Yeah I bought it. It's definately worth it. It completely enhansed my right hand technique and knowledge of the fingerboard. Though, be prepared. Sutton isn't quite as good as Kaufman when it comes to talking. His train of thought is hard to follow sometimes.
I have the video... and I LOVE it! I have learned so much from it and it has helped my technique so much. I would suggest it to anybody wanting to learn guitar.
Playing fast isn't the point. That's athletics, not music. The point is to play fast, and clean, and musically. Then it's exciting, breathtaking and beautiful. Otherwise it's just noise. People like Sutton and Doc Watson are famous not because they play fast, but because they play well.
You're right as too many people think fast = good. Even Steve Kaufman says the most important things are timing, rhythm, and TONE. However, being able to play these old fiddle tunes up to speed while flat-picking takes speed to do so. Sutton and Kilby just happen to be two guys who can play fast but maintain great timing, rhythm, and tone. That is what makes them great guitarists and separates them from the wannabes who try to play fast and mute most of what they try to play.
yeah dewrite, you can watch old footage of Cody, Chris Thile, Josh Williams and Michael Cleveland playing together. Pete Wernick arranged the "youth all-stars" for festivals when these guys were kids.
I saw a clip of that ages ago but, unfortunately, I think it got pulled off of Youtube as I haven't been able to find it since. They just wore it out in that clip though.
Cody is one of those guys who just "gets it." Maybe if I had started playing at a younger age than 36, I would be in that crowd but I doubt it. There was a local girl like that who at the age of 9 was playing Chris Thile licks note for note but then gave it up if you can believe it to play bass. A good friend of mine (a fiddler) is like that in that he can figure out an instrument in no time. My brain just doesn't work that way, unfortunately.
This stuff is so great. I live in NYC and we have great jazz players up here.. some really incredible players. But i think all of them could really learn a lot from these guys. Bryan's right hand is so hig level and requires so much skill. Until you try to do what he's doing, no matter how good you are, you don't fully appreciate how good this technique is.
What you have to understand is that nate36 is one of these idiots (flamers) who is such a dim-witted child that he has nothing better to do than to post crap like his comment just to try to tick people off.
Then buy the DVD! It is one of the best teachng DVDs ever made with real content on how to play better. Most videos only contain the artist showing you how they play tunes. Bryan talks about how he approach rhythm and lead and provides great tips on playng better all around guitar.
I've watched the available clips and seen them live but Ricky seems to keep Cody in a box most of the time. He'll let him cut loose a few times during a show but Ricky has about forty eleven folks on stage with him so you never really get the full effect of how impressive Cody is.
Ricky himself is a master musician and amazing band leader. If you let the flat pickers take over the song, you can loose the melody really quick. But everytime Ive seen Ricky he lets Cody take a break on just about every song. One thing is for sure, he can't hold back Jimmy Mills, thatguy is an animal . I think Cody Kilby is the best flat picker out there today that I have ever seen in person. He is just phenominal. I saw him on a tv show onetime, and I understand where your coming from
When I saw Ricky play live last summer, I sure don't remember Cody taking breaks on every song. Many don't know that Cody is as proficient on the banjo and mandolin as he is on the guitar. Tim Stafford (Blue Highway) told me he worked on a project recently with Cody on banjo and said Cody was incredible.
That's true. Tim has a really unique sound. No other guitarist sounds like Tim Stafford. You're right on the second count too. I've talked with Tim a lot and we e-mail pretty regularly. You won't meet a nicer guy. He's also sharp as a tack. He completed all of his course work for a Phd. in history (and even taught at the college level) but chose music instead. I think that's one of the things that makes him such a good song writer.

3) Someone who doesn't know how bad his posts make him look.
