I know I'm a month late to the BBQ but this was a great vid and something a lotta folks don't think about. I don't remember the names but there are several programs you can buy that basically give you a bunch of realistic targets you can print out out on your own printer for very cheap. Cheaper Than Dirt used to sell one IIRC.
One thing that i did that helped me adjust to having a gun point at me was I played airsoft. I played it competitively for several years but my fist time staring down a "gun" barrel, I froze, but my opponent did not have the same problem. But i will say that this is a very good video in how is shows some of the downfalls of people training with guns for self defense.
I do this in my bedroom mirror and yeah something is scary about it. You want real! check out those 911 calls on you tube of people using there guns when bad guys break in. Good reality check!
I don't have any training so every little bit helps. Thanks Bro.
For this reason airsoft is a great training tool when understanding its limitations. Additionally print off some pictures of various peoples faces at different angles off the internet and post it on your silhouette. This will help you practice aiming for the brain stem when a well aimed shot is needed, and adds a HUGE realism to your practice. Additionally, you have to see the threat to engage it, so be sure you look to the left AND RIGHT of your shoulders and always know whats going around you.
If the average person, who is the average voter and the majority of voters, sees someone do something really, REALLY stupid with a firearm and then decides to go watch MORE videos of guys doing stupid crap, then listens to a gun control advocates argument then its not far fetched to think that maybe this guy would vote for gun control if given the chance. IF enough people feel that way and ARE given the chance we could have another TEN YEAR "assault weapons" band like from 1995-2005.
I have to disagree with some stuff in the video, likethe idea that doing things unsafely can never have consquences to our rights. How do people think we got to the point of having the assault weapons ban or even the balisong knife and switchblade ban? Its because the average person saw those things a lot of was convinced that they were dangerous and thus they were made illegal. Theres no reason the same thing cant happen today, especially with obama in office, hes pushing for bans as we speak.
Jeff, you really annoy me and I think your channel peaked a year ago but I do have to pay you a genuine compliment: you look great. You've lost a lot of weight and I hope it continues. Health is important and I wish you continued success.
if someone has gun on you and yours is in holster nothing will get you killed faster then attempting a draw.train to survive. First hands then knife then gun. Action always beets reaction.

@1999danie You don't need a knife in school. period. end of discussion. And if you say you won't bring it to school then what are you using it for? half your time is school, 25 (at least) is home, and the other 25 is miscellaneous. more than seventy percent of the time you have no need for a knife. If you get beat up in school then fight back, tell teachers, don't be in the same area as the other people. Simple. You don't need a knife to oppose a bully. At home there are plenty of cutting...

That was awwsome man. I am a big fan. Me and my sparing partners practice with paint ball or be be gun. With Proper Gear! That way is a great way to practice how to take out a person with a gun when you are with out.
At my indoor range this lady looking at a rental pistols slowly muzzled me straight across my head. I mean I was one foot to her left waiting to pay my lane fee. I quickly took a few steps away while giving her the kind of look that kills. Her response was '' oh it's not loaded". I wanted to say look *itch I don't know that, don't ever point a guy at anything you don't intend to shoot. But her male partner and the clerk took care of it for me. It did piss me off but I'm no gun safety nanny.
These are excellent points, thanks for sharing. Recently my family re-evaluated our home defense set-up and started taking a more realistic view of potential situations. Scarily enough this led to making many changes that better ensure our safety and ability to respond to a life threatening situation. Now is the time to start thinking about how things will really be. Be safe everyone.
Jeff, what you said about shooting a target is very true. Being a LEO, I can assure you shooting at and being shot at is totally different than being at the range. I recall the first time I was shot at. I was mad to think someone would be doing this to me and of course I fired back. We practice in the Alley as we call it. Different targets as people in true life size. They pop up or slide across and a gun is pointed at you. Wish everyone could use it at least once. Happy shooting and be safe.
i also agree with shooting silhouettes i hate when im looking up a video on youtube to see a gun breakdown or field strip and i come across airsoft crap from a 13 year old kid dont get me wrong he has his place on youtube but they need to say airsoft in the title. (but to my point) go buy two little pos airsoft guns at walmart load up on bbs and have a full scale gunfight with someone and get used to running shooting ducking shooting reloading shooting. its not real but its better than nothing
I believe you should only practice shooting about 25% of the time with a two hand grip. You need to learn to shot with each hand unsupported and independent. If you break an arm (been there, done that) you may go several months unable to shoot with two hands. I think (my opinion only) a person with an arm in a sling may be a more appealing target for the average thug.
Lol on the 80's targets. The one i see the most: guy with sunglasses, mullet and toothpick in the mouth. woman with acid wash jeans, shoulder pads and high hair as hostage. Or ski mask man.
Good points. Circular targets are really only for competitive shooting and to test accuracy with different sights and barrels and such. For shooting practise it would always make most sense to use a picture of what you are training to shoot - a person for self defence, a deer or duck for hunting practise, etc.
Good video, the way I practice at a static indoor range is to pull from various holster and unload. There is no other way to train at the static range because statistics show that gun battles last less than 5 second. Train to get as many on target as fast as you can from a your carry position.
I would just like to mention as a film professional, that not only will you not see a gun straight at the camera on youtube, you will also not see it in the movies or on television.
It WAS popular in the 80s to print those sorts of targets. Also, you couldn't print a depiction of a criminal nowadays without being politically incorrect and upsetting the ethnic group, political group, religious group, or whatever group you depicted.
besides, u have to prepare yourself to shoot someone, not a target, a real person. i think real size pictures with "full-body" people aiming at you is the best target for practice. that's cuz in real life you may not want to headshot and kill your "opponent", but maybe shoot his leg, so you defend yourself without killing. that's a good way to train and be ready to knock down an agressor
LTC. Grossman talks extensively on this prior to the Korean war only 10 to 15% of soldiers actually fire their weapon to kill so the army started using human silhouetted targets. Korea the active shooting numbers went up to 50% plus and Vietnam the active shooting went to 95%. Fear is a lot of the reason people fail to engage but also all but about 2% of us value human life and have reservation about killing our own suspicious. Except that 2% that doesn't have that glue. Good video Jeff
excellent points man, marksmanship is fun, but for most of us, self defense is much more practical and useful. I think it is irresponsible to be a gun owner and especially a concealed carry permit holder and not practice all the time. if you have a CCW, it's your duty to be ready, to practice, and to take it very seriously. I just can't believe it when people who carry every day, both cops and civilians, only go to the range less than 5 times a year.
Great video CL as always! thats one of the biggest reasons why I won't join a regular or "conventional" gun range, way too many restrictions. You must train and shoot like as if your on the street carrying concealed and there is a threat, off balance maybe, heavy or restricted breathing and so on. It's not much good training with you sitting on a nice bench with gun and ammo laid out in front of you. Glad to see your making more gun related videos.
There was assault recently. Allegedly, while investigating burglar alarm on his garage, a old dude (63) got jumped from behind by three around 20 of age, got cut, was thrown to the ground and got kicked. Still laying pulled out gun, shoot one dead and one minor wound. The two living suspects escaped. Both dead and the wounded were on suspended sentence. Now the man and his family receives murder, rape and arsony threats. thats also reality of self defense.
@thebuffalochicken - you shoot to stop the threat. Period. If you go into a courtroom saying you shot to kill you will end up in a jail cell. You shoot until there us no longer a threat.
lol...those guys are always from the 80s...they should make a modern one with a dude with an iphone in one hand and his glock in the other with earbuds in his ears
You only draw if you intend to use it and shoot center of mass with the intent to KILL. Otherwise you Run.You never shoot to stop, you shoot to kill. Your firearm is your last resort. But never draw unless you are going to kill!
If you try pulling a gun on someone when you're already being aimed at, 95% of the time you're going to get shot. That's pretty stupid advice Jeff, no offence man.
@GhilliedUp If push comes to shove, you can get shot anyway. You might as well accept the fact, that if you are in a deadly confrontation that you may end up injured in the situation.
You must act based upon how you feel the situation is going. There are many criminals that will shoot you regardless of what you do...
You should show us some real life situations and how to handle them. A few days ago at night I was chased and almost attacked by two people and although I always carry a knife for self defense I had no idea what to do and how to react in the heat of the moment. Same for a gun if the moment comes how do you know when its right to use your weapon?
I have to admit it was pretty darned funny when you pointed out that all the human target pictures were taken in the 80's because it's absolutely true, haha.
lol.. I dont mind seeing a gun in a camera.. infact, I pay good money in the movie theatre for that exact pleasure. What would be cool is to shoot the gun into the camera.... setup the camera at the range and shoot right past it :D
For some people it is just hard to accept the fact, that civilians are allowed to carry loaded weapons in their house. For someone like me who comes from canada, there is no need for firearms at a civilian level. But yes i do agree with you there are some people who are anti-gun and don't no shit about firearms
@18002779904 No need for guns at a civvie level? Thats bullshit, it's a hobby for me, a very expensive one, and if someone comes into my house and I can get to my gun, they will get shot.
@18002779904 no need for firearms at a civilian level..man thats great to hear that theres a place where there is no crime, no worries of rape or being attacked in your own home or most of all that theres a goverment that the people dont need to fear and fully trust .
@glock10mm Welcome to Canada. I mean there is obviously crime here too, but i can walk through the streets without a firearm because canadians dont feel the same insecurity level as americans do.
me and my friends shoot staggered around eachother with cross fire and all sorts of that kind of crazy shit cause its real, thats how it would end up being in the real world. we all carry and are well trained and i would trust any of them with my life. and after all that its still un easy to look up and look down jeffs kill shot lol
jeff your video is simple yet very useful i am a gun owner and i carry mine the shooting while knowing what it feel like to have a weapon pointed at you is super useful now i practice with pellet guns with my buddy's and safety gear i know a pellet gun is not a real gun but when hit it can hurt and the only way to be safe is to know your gear and do ur best to control how you react
It runs two ways. In Norway last year there was a terrible massacre. The guy was a nutcase and was into guns. That is a fact. had someone at the scene had a CCW, could they have stopped that man? Think about it. Gun's are here, in the real world, like it or not. He had gun's. The only thing that could have stopped him sooner is someone else with a gun. It is the way it is. The cops stopped him, 2 hours late!
I'ts a good thing! We outshoot the rest of the world, we know guns and we are ready. Quit preaching and join those who fight for freedom. If that is no good for you, then go beat yourself with a stick, enjoy the hell out of it. Then get a gun and learn something about it!
excellent point Jeff...I own many guns and looking at the video I was taken aback.... many different purposes for guns, but for me defense is number one
Good point bro. That's good to incorporate into training. Thanks! Some people may not like it, but heck, even if just one person took your opinion and learned something from it and eventually saved his or her life upon encountering a defense situation. I'd say, keep doing what you do and do what you have to do. Good luck and stay safe!
@Tecanuva no but maybe you're neighbor does or that guy in front on you in line at target. you just don't know. didn't you're parents ever say "better safe than sorry"?
@Tecanuva well you obviously don't like Americans so I'm not gonna just waste my time on some asshole who thinks their country is better than ours. what are gonna say now? "oh typical American to swear off someone" go back and hide in you're fucking hole you maggot
@Tecanuva oh yeah keep insulting the USA and it's people, it won't fill the hole in you're life. now if you want to keep rambling on about your anger (or jealousy as it seems) toward us you go do that but this is my last post you you cause you clearly aren't worth even a nanosecond of my time anymore cuz i actually have a life. and you aren't allowed to post back at me and yes because i said so and i wonder what it would make you look like if you did
@Tecanuva It's hardly about people with guns, a person aiming a gun at you is just the given example. It's about target identification, in general; whether it be a gun, knife, or an improvised weapon. You'd have to be very naive to think everything would be ok if we just banned all weapons. All you'd do is make a lot of defenseless people, as not everyone will conform to those laws, and would find it much easier to take advantage of people.
@Blakobness Target identification? You're saying words but I highly doubt you know what those words mean. Like I said before, weapons are illegal in australia so technically we are all "defenseless", yet I don't see anyone being taken advantage of
@Tecanuva I'm betting 50 that Blakobness knows what he's talking about when he mentions target identification. That's actually an easy one, such inane rhetoric makes you look ignorant.
@Tecanuva Then you're just turning a blind eye to the issue. Crime rates in Australia may be lower than in many countries, but they obviously still happen, as shown by the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. And, illegal or not, people do still find ways to get weapons in your country.
@Blakobness All this talk about defensive, gun defense etc. Yet in terms of first world countries, its mostly USA that has this problem and no other country. Just look at homocide rates by firearm -index online.
@finnsia Well of course, the US has an estimated 270,000,000+ privately owned guns as of 2009. Oddly enough though, when you look at overall violent crime, the UK is much higher even with their gun prohibition.
@irishScott2 I highly doubt scandivanian countries in addition to japan and hong kong being on the list. As for the UK, its fucked and has been for quite a while, even before those ridiculous riots.
@finnsia I don't deny that the US has one of the highest homicide rates in 1st world countries via firearms, but again I have to mention that people will use any means available to do harm unto others. While places like Great Britain have bans on firearms, they have knife crime instead. The issue doesn't go away just because you take one means to an end away, people just find another way.
I totally agree with you man. I have always said the same thing and some people still get so crazy about it. Thanks for the share!

Looking down the barrel of a gun from the wrong end, does, in fact, suck.

Or ski mask man.
satorres82 1 month ago
Good points. Circular targets are really only for competitive shooting and to test accuracy with different sights and barrels and such. For shooting practise it would always make most sense to use a picture of what you are training to shoot - a person for self defence, a deer or duck for hunting practise, etc.
jaseth1337 1 month ago
Good video, the way I practice at a static indoor range is to pull from various holster and unload. There is no other way to train at the static range because statistics show that gun battles last less than 5 second. Train to get as many on target as fast as you can from a your carry position.

I would just like to mention as a film professional, that not only will you not see a gun straight at the camera on youtube, you will also not see it in the movies or on television.
iamtheraven2011 1 month ago
It WAS popular in the 80s to print those sorts of targets. Also, you couldn't print a depiction of a criminal nowadays without being politically incorrect and upsetting the ethnic group, political group, religious group, or whatever group you depicted.

MrColt45acp 1 month ago
besides, u have to prepare yourself to shoot someone, not a target, a real person. i think real size pictures with "full-body" people aiming at you is the best target for practice. that's cuz in real life you may not want to headshot and kill your "opponent", but maybe shoot his leg, so you defend yourself without killing. that's a good way to train and be ready to knock down an agressor
1SANTISTA1 1 month ago
@1SANTISTA1
Anyone worth shooting, is worth shooting in the center of mass, which is what you should be aiming for.
Legs, arms, head, are very narrow targets. With adrenaline rushing through you and nerves, you are much more likely to miss the small targets.
C.O.M. is easiest to hit, being the largest target area.
Shooting someone in the leg, especially if they have a gun as well, would be foolish.

If you try pulling a gun on someone when you're already being aimed at, 95% of the time you're going to get shot. That's pretty stupid advice Jeff, no offence man.
GhilliedUp 1 month ago
@GhilliedUp If push comes to shove, you can get shot anyway. You might as well accept the fact, that if you are in a deadly confrontation that you may end up injured in the situation.
You must act based upon how you feel the situation is going. There are many criminals that will shoot you regardless of what you do...

You should show us some real life situations and how to handle them. A few days ago at night I was chased and almost attacked by two people and although I always carry a knife for self defense I had no idea what to do and how to react in the heat of the moment. Same for a gun if the moment comes how do you know when its right to use your weapon?

For some people it is just hard to accept the fact, that civilians are allowed to carry loaded weapons in their house.

Tecanuva 1 month ago
@Tecanuva Because you're all supermen and if you have a gun pulled on you and you get shot, the bullets will just bounce off.
Is that the logic you are going for?
illogicalmethod 1 month ago
@Tecanuva It's hardly about people with guns, a person aiming a gun at you is just the given example. It's about target identification, in general; whether it be a gun, knife, or an improvised weapon. You'd have to be very naive to think everything would be ok if we just banned all weapons. All you'd do is make a lot of defenseless people, as not everyone will conform to those laws, and would find it much easier to take advantage of people.
Blakobness 1 month ago
@Blakobness Target identification? You're saying words but I highly doubt you know what those words mean. Like I said before, weapons are illegal in australia so technically we are all "defenseless", yet I don't see anyone being taken advantage of
Tecanuva 1 month ago
@Tecanuva I'm betting 50 that Blakobness knows what he's talking about when he mentions target identification. That's actually an easy one, such inane rhetoric makes you look ignorant.
illogicalmethod 1 month ago
@Tecanuva Then you're just turning a blind eye to the issue. Crime rates in Australia may be lower than in many countries, but they obviously still happen, as shown by the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. And, illegal or not, people do still find ways to get weapons in your country.
Blakobness 1 month ago
@Blakobness All this talk about defensive, gun defense etc. Yet in terms of first world countries, its mostly USA that has this problem and no other country. Just look at homocide rates by firearm -index online.
finnsia 1 month ago
@finnsia ya but look at how many foreigners or aliens are committing homicide in america.... americans are a minority in america now fyi...
oogiesmuncher 1 month ago
@finnsia Well of course, the US has an estimated 270,000,000+ privately owned guns as of 2009. Oddly enough though, when you look at overall violent crime, the UK is much higher even with their gun prohibition.
irishScott2 1 month ago
@irishScott2 I highly doubt scandivanian countries in addition to japan and hong kong being on the list. As for the UK, its fucked and has been for quite a while, even before those ridiculous riots.
finnsia 1 month ago
@finnsia I don't deny that the US has one of the highest homicide rates in 1st world countries via firearms, but again I have to mention that people will use any means available to do harm unto others. While places like Great Britain have bans on firearms, they have knife crime instead. The issue doesn't go away just because you take one means to an end away, people just find another way.
Blakobness 1 month ago
