A big thank you from the Netherlands! Installed my brand new tonearm in one go, no problems whatsoever thanks to your very informative video. Saved me at least 50 euros.
@fiat131abarth1 No problem, I'm just glad to have been a help. and I'm happy when I hear that people are using my videos and successfully repairing there decks.
I am having issues with my ground on my technic..in scratch live..the signal bar is red..i got it internally grounded after n it still has bad signal...what can it b?
Great vid. One quick question, is it possible to change the tube of the tone arm without de soldering the circuit board? Thanks again for the great tutorials.
@DJSTEVIET1 HI VIPERFRANK JUST WANA SAY LOVE YA VIDEOS THEY HAVE HELPED ME MORE THAN YOU KNOW,MY 1210 MK2 DECKS ARE MY PRIDE AND JOY BUT FOUND IT STRANGE TO LOVE SOMETHING FOR SO LONG BUT KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT THEM TILL I SAW YOUR EXCELLENT VIDEOS,WENT STRAIGHT IN AT THE DEEP END AND FOLLOWED YOUR VIDEO ON CHANGING THE COMPLETE TONE ARM AND TO MY AMAZMENT YOU HAD ME DOING THINGS I THOUGHT WAS IMPOSIBLE.ALSO DONE YOUR PLATTER CLEANING ONE WHICH BROUGHT BK THE SPARKLE AND ALL OF UR SET UP VIDEOS
@DJSTEVIET1 B4 I GO WHEN I BROUGHT A NEW COMPLETE TONE ARM THE WIRES WERNT VERY LONG SO WHEN I FOLLOWED YOUR VIDEO ON REPLACING IT YOU STATED YOU HAVE TO UNSOLDER THE TINY WIRES FROM THE OLD ARM THEN RESOLDER THE NEW ONES ON,I OBVIOUSLY COUULDNT DO AS NEW WIRES TO SHORT SO I CUT THE OLD WIRES BY THE ANTISKATE BUTTON AND DONE A TIGHT TWIST CONNECTION TO THE WIRES ON THE NEW ARM WHICH WAS VERY DIFFICULT BUT IS NOW COMPLETE,DO U THINK THAT CAN AFFECT THE SOUND QUALITY,ALL JOINS ARE TAPED SEALED
I will be putting this bit of knowledge to use soon. My girlfriend just dumped both my 1200's. Luckily only one was damaged significantly, the tonearm bearing assembly will need replacing. You have demystified this process. Great videos, Many, many, thanks.
this video was a bit fiddly. nah jk. thanks for this dude. I have replaced somethings on tech 1200s but never a tone arm. my buddy dropped on of mine and the arm is all bent now. now because of your awesome tutorials, I shall attempt the job.
I can not thank you enough! Back in '95, I flew to NYC with my decks and the arms got completely screwed up. Once I got back home, I replaced them myself, but they never were the same. Anti-skating was off and I was always having grounding hum issues. I took them apart with the help of your video and realized I put the bloody wires through the wrong hole, and they where tugging on the arm. Now, they sound and operate like brand new! 15 years I had it wrong! Thank you, thank you! You ROCK!
I was close to forking out £100 for a specialist to do this for me. Instead I bought an £8 soldering iron, and followed this vid. Thanks for taking the time to post this, it's a great tutorial. I salute you sir.
i ordered the rca/chip board i have to replace on my 1200 it was only 35 bucks it looks sorda easy to do but those wires for the tone arm are mad skinny...do u have a video on that replacement.. ur videos are real helpful detailed step by step . !
Great tutorials! What if my only problem is the counterweight won't thread onto the back of the tonearm, it's just really loose? I know I wouldn't have to do all this, but how would I remedy a loose counterweight/tonearm combination? I think my problem is with the bottom part of the back of the tonearm because there is nothing to grip the grooves of the counterweight. There's a little bit going on on the bottom part of the back of the tonearm, what should I mess with there?
can anyone tell me how to remove the tonarm lift lever? it looks from the service manual like the black plastic end piece unscrews from the metal lever... but i can't make that happen / don't want to force it. i have one with a snapped lever and one i can replace it with if i can remove it from the donor tonearm... it's the one thing i can't find discussed anywhere.. great videos these . thank you.
Super clear and most informative, your approach seems to be the best as far as making it easiest to work on the wires since I just received my replacement tonearm and the wires are indeed super thin.
@slick3rick Just a little follow up. Just finished the process about to plug it back in just wanted to add that if you accidentally/stupidly (like me) forget to tape the wires, a dentists hook is a perfect tool to guiding those hair fiber thin wires through were you need them to be to solder them into the circuit board.
Hey man, this video is absolutely great! I just got off the phone with a repair company in Brooklyn, and the dude was a real dick when I asked him if it would be hard to do it myself. Checked out this video and the next step is ordering the part! Thanks alot mate nice one!
if i only replace the "tube part" with the 2 locking screws. can i use the already soldered original wires and thread through or do i still need to solder?
My first comment on youtube... and it is overwhelmingly positive - nice one! I've had my 1210s for 15 years and the tone arm has been loose (it rattles, but does not cause issues with the sound) pretty much all that time. Before I dismantle the unit, can you tell me if this is likely to be an easy fix e.g. a loose screw? Thanks again for the video!
Excellent, thanks for this, really came in handy, another video I've looked to of yours!
Bit of info for you, the 1210MK3's can use the 1210MK2 tonearm.
Might have different coloured cables like mine, but there was only one difference, the new one had a brown cable, which was the only different colour, which was where the green cable was.
@psykick77 hi there, you will find it quite hard to find a hole tone arm assembly new because its not a standard replacement part, you will have better luck finding one second hand, the price will vary depending one the condition, age .ect but your looking at any thing form £30 - £100 for a really good condition one.
what I did to get that part was to buy a knackered 1200 that had a good tone arm, cost me like £60 and had some other spare parts left over.
This is a excellent video. Can you make a video to show how you can change the tone arm wires. as I would like to replace the old ones withsilver wire
Frank! ok now i replace my tonearm and i assembled everything as in your instruction video and now the antiskate is off ! is there a way to adjust the internal antiskate hook-ish (thing?) to get the antiskate working again ?

hi there, sorry for taking so long to reply, the tone-arm lift lever, well its not vital i don't remember the last time i actually used mine to be honest you just kind of get used to lifting it buy the handle on the cartridge but its still nice to have even if you don't use it much. but your turntable will work fine without it, some turntables dont have one. a couple of people have asked me to do a video on how to replace it so first chance i get ill do a video.

However, I have one question I changed my tone are, but the colors are different from the original which was Blue, Red, White, Black and green. I now have Blue, Red, White, Brown and Black. Do you know how this should be soldered onto the board?
nice one, so much easyer, i wish i watched this yesterday when my 1200 was in pieces all over the kitchen table. also that one screw next to the pitch that has the earth cable, is there anyway to remove that screw because i used a electric screw driver and the head of the screw snapped right off.

is it possible to throw off the anti skate when replacing the tone arm ? i think thats what i wound up doing when i replace mine today.
ecampo5 1 year ago
I would like to add some info.
Often after a long time of use the soldering on the edge of the arm on the cartridge fixation is oxyded.
This creates contact failure on the cartrige.
A dissassembling of the tonearm is then required.
If you do this, I would recommend to change the wiring of the tonearm wich is übercrap.
I replaced those with quality mogami cables and the enhancement is simply astonishing.
Even if the linearity of the horizontal movement of the tonearm is slightly altered.

Where can you find that complete assembly with the height adjustment and everything in the US???
DJMGM88 2 years ago
Great !
A good Idea would be to solder a thin wire to the wiring of the tone-arm to replace and use it as a guide for the new wirings.
When I did this I used a toilet paper roll in the center of to stabilise the turntable .
You can then work on a table.
Also the soldering part in the tutorial is a bit light IMO.
My Advices
Don't overheat while soldering.
Use decent solder.
Clean connections by removing old solder.
Beware the soldering part is not that easy for noobs.
