@kemetman512 and @crut5 Fact of the matter is, Diana got the solo career and Florence Didn't. Florence could have been successful but ABC were just not interested enough. They thought they could make a quick buck from her Supremes past but Motown wasn't about to let that happen. And let's get real to the the fact that although Florence and Diana were very talented, they weren't the only one's in the group. What about Jean? Surely she was competition for both of them?
There are actually three "lead" vocals on YKMHO: Diana was double-tracked and then combined with a third track of Florence singing lead. The saltiness of Florence's voice is easy to pick out, and the occasional lack of perfect synchronization between Diana's and Florence's leads was intentionally left in.
this is just Diane 'double tracking' herself!!Oh...here we go...'the girls' have started...!!They really double tracked Diane's voice the whole way through this!!
florence ballard couldn't upstage anybody and she sure as hell couldn't Diana Ross. sometimes i wonder where some of you people buy your brains from--Walmart, i guess.
We come from reality every program and or special acknowledges that Florence was a voice ot be admired. This comes from her peers.Even Di said that Florence had this great incredible powerful voice in interviews. There are several celebrities whose voices I or you might not care for .Thats my opinion and like an asshole everybody has one.
@crut5 What are you...releated to that no talented bitch ass Ross. Or are you related to that thief...that charlatan....that criminal Gordy???????? Florence had more talent in little finger that Ross had in her miserable excuse of a life!!!!!!
@kemetman512 ---You got loads of class, that's obvious from your termonology. And you are very intelligent and knowledgable. Of course, Diana Ross has no talent! Her career has proven that! And for sure, Florence Ballard was much more talented than Diana Ross. Heck, Florence's stellar career with The Supremes, and most certainly afterwards, proved that. Thanks for so eloquently setting straight. You are a credit to your group.
@crut5 With the right producing team, Diana did sound great. notice how her hits stopped comming continuously after HDH quit producing the group. HDH knew how to make her sound better, wrote songs for her sound. Michael Messer and Ron Miller were able some the 70's. But her constant hits stopped when HDH, quit Motown. Her solo career, she had 6 number one records. During the HDH run, she had ten 1's and 4 top ten, during a 3 year period. in the 70's, she was hit or miss.
@kemetman512 why do you waste your time talking bout the 60's .50 years later dang let it gooo. im pretty sure diana ross aint losing no sleep by people like u.
@tony3918 LOOOL! Don't waste your time...pride can be an unbreakable force of negativity, sometimes. Some people get a point in life where they think that either they're to old to change or that making a change with make them look weak. So, I'm starting with the man in the mirror and making the change for myself! *WINK! WINK!* MJ Reference!
There is a version I found on the "Billboard R & B hits of 1967"...where the mix includes Florence's vocals as a basic duet with Ross. Mary wilson wrote about this in "Dreamgirl". Gordy killed it!!!
That version can be found on The Motown Story The First Decade. It's my fav version of this rock song. Few black artists did rock - Jimmy Hendricks, Tina, and here are The Supremes rockin' it.
Too bad this is'nt the other version with Mary & Florence on the whole recording, giving Diana Hell on the backgrounds. that one is ThE BOMB.. Check it out on the tube.
I don't have this acapella I only have the one without flo and mary but my god flo is blowing in this with only diana you can hear her echo relally loud how she SING "KEEP ME HANGIN' ON" =D
Diana's voice is overdubbed - two overlapping tracks of her singing two separate times (notice sometimes she varies between lines, or wavers a little bit from herself). There was an more backup vocal of Flo that was later dropped because she overpowered even Diana's two "voices". This recording inspired the Dreamgirls scene "Heavy, Heavy", where Effie's voice overpower Deena's. Notice the song similarities - speed up this song a little and you can sing "Heavy, Heavy" to it perfectly.
This should be required listening for anyone interested in singing pop/soul music, as her clean vocals are certainly a Master Class, if ever I've heard one!!
Nah, Flo & Diana, The Best, Mary was just there to Humm, Clap & do The 4 Tops

@RedRoosterRoad And don't get me started on "SCHERRIE"! Homegurl could slayyyyy her competitors!
As far as I'm concerned, the Supremes were host to some GREAT vocalists throughout the duration of the group!

Can you share mp3? The only version i've found on the internets has the backing vocals really low in the mix.

Mary's singing the backup with Flo. There's a karoake track available (no lead vocal) where her voice is more recognizable than here.
