Before the war, there were loads of Germans in these villages. We attended school together. When the war started, they acted like gods; they'd slaughter you & be happy about it... as the old Polish gentleman described it solemnly.

That's what group ideology, superstitions, & herd mentality do to people: such nonsense, when they converge in the hearts & minds of the masses, drive people -- who behave like herds -- to do things they won't do otherwise...
