I'm pretty sure that the issues with this song are caused more by bad recording quality than by lack of digital enchancement. For example, in studio the guitar is recorded by plugging the amp straight into the recorder instead of micing it as a mic will inevitably horribly distort the sound of a guitar. Im not sure about Axl's voice.

Guitars are never recorded straight from the amp, they are almost always mic'ed. Overdriven/distortion tone sounds terrible straight from the amp, really buzzy, so you want the frequency attenuation of the speaker cab and the microphone itself. No mic will 'horribly distort' the sound, there are a huge number designed specially for the job.
