wonderful book indeed, through silmarillion, i learned that kings of arnor,gondor/men descended from elros including the aragorn and the dunedains. The second edition edited by Christopher Tolkien(J.R.R. Tolkien's son) was a great edition of the book.
Listen to "Nightfall On Middle Earth" by the metal band "Blind Guardian". Does a near perfect retelling of the Silmarillion up through the fifth battle. It's the reason I ended up reading the book.
I was going to nitpick but decided not to since it's so hard to concisely talk about everything in the book and you actually did a pretty good job.
...
...
OK so I actually can't stop myself from nitpicking just a little. It wasn't most of the elves in the west; it was just most of the Noldor. But I see why you simplified it.
Nicely done, and neatly links various parts of Silmarillion to characters and events in Lord of the Rings. Not much on the 2nd Age, which is also bridge between the two, but of course one can't cover everything in a short video. Maybe for a sequel? Also heartening to see such interest in the actual books on Middle Earth. The LOTR film trilogy made such an awful B-movie mess out of Tolkien's great classic, I hope someone will someday make a new film to erase the nightmare of that Orcish mockery.
Nothing will ever compare to the books benbarfuss, however I think the films were good in their own right. They were an adapatation and not meant to be a carbon copy of the books.
I think PJ did a good job, but everyone has a right to their own opinion.
I have read the book (LOTR) several times and sure the movie doesnt follow the books exactly BUT is still a great adaptation.. It says in the opening credits "based" on Tolkiens book...
I read The Hobbit weeks ago and then started reading The Lord of the Rings. I'm still reading it and have thought of the Silmarillion, but after seeing this wonderful piece that you've put together I realize that now I must read it. Thanks so much for such a great contribution!
I want to heartily thank you for putting this together. For years I've had great desire to read this book and learn about Middle-Earth's vast history, but have been far too busy with college work, ROTC life and... playing Lord of the Rings Online ;)
Holy god, i have not read the silmarillion and this story is more epic than LOTR, and i knew gandalf was old but not that old, i am awe struck, amazed just amazed.
I read the book Silmarillion a couple of years ago. It's written almost like a history book (sounds boring but for some reason I kept reading and finished it in a couple of days)
I couldn't convince anyone of my friends to read it. Glad to see others like yourself share the same interest!
Imagine a movie based on Elven city of Gondolin or the Island of Numenor. That would be magnificent.
big fan of the book so I have to point out something. Olorin is not Gandalf. Gandalf, being of the order of the Istari, appeared in middle earth much later then the events discribed in the Quenta Silmarrilion. Yes, the Istari may be maiar sent by the Valar, but if you read the last paragraph in the anulindale, what JRRT was hinting at is that Olorin is actually Tom Bombadil "The fatherless" he who was first. The description fits Bombadil better than Mithrandir.
Nicely done, I agree with "WINGSDIPEDINBLOOD" The only tolkein book they give us in highschool to read is the Hobbit, which I read so far 9 times!!!
It's funny how Enetar (or Sauron) got easily seduced by Morgoth, maybe he did it willingly, so that he would rule anyway... Other from that there was no way for Morgoth to return no matter what, He was locked in the void there to rot and to torture all the evil souls that came to him, unlike this rule, When Sauron was destroyed in the....
Sauron was easily seduces because he was a maiar of Aule . And the book says that Aule was closest to Sauron and that the only diference was that Aule wasn't jealous of the other valier their works and he didn't want to be this great tiran . (Morgoth actaully tried to seduce Aule as well but it didn't work )
The Silmarillion was Tolkien at his best, especially "Beren and Luthien", and "The Voyage of Earendil". The tragedy of Turin must be included in this splendor as well. Not to take anything away from the "Lord of the Rings", but "The Silmarillion" surpasses all literature. Granted, it helps to add the writings of the "Unfinished Tales" and "The History of Middle Earth" to add to the details of this wondrous drama, but Tolkien's true epic and beauty lies within "The Silmarillion".
the greatest thing that took place in my veiw was when the host of the Valar came and did battle with morgoth and his host... there could be no movie to describe this battle. and there never will be. sigh...
Because practicly there is no battle... As soon as the Valar step on the ground of Middle earth, it begins to shake anad all of Melkor's beasts are destroyed...
All this talk about maiar... are we forgetting the more GREAT things that occured? the creation of the silmarills is in itself a huge magnificent story. so powerful and mighty they were... and not Gandalf-not Sauromon-not SUARON-AND NOT MORGOTH,the most powerful of the greatest vala(as melkor ne way) could claim title as there maker... but an ELF.that shows u how badass the elves where.but maia-they where hardcore and know this-Suaron was the greatest of ALL maia, witch morgoth indeed beheld.
wow that wasnt so short... but hey old tolkien couldnt finish the silmarillion and i cant finish this bottle of wiskey so where all on the same elvin shit that will nevr spring a leek(hicup) NE WAYZ its pure like this Morgoth wanted to frak up all the good things-he accomnplished much... but to say feanor exacted morgoths will is mirror-matched because the dark lord went and got himself kicked outa the door of night(the whole picture)BOOYA and thats the next them to tolkiens world-C U There!
im drunk again so ill make this short. Fingolfin-mighty mighty fingolfin...the strongest of finways sons-zero doubt. BUT forget not it was proclaimed feanor-first son of finwe was the mightiest.remember fingolfin was the one who followed his oath to begin with.feanors rage was so immense that he burned his brothers transport ships soely out of impatients and doubt that fingolfin would flee back to aman like the first retreating host.
well done, my favorite book of all time, i wish they would make a series of movies about this, screw the hobbit, this was sooooo much better, fingolfin is my fav character
I dont agree with you rubbishing 'The Hobbit'. The Silmarillion is a darker, deeper series of stories which involves 3 whole ages, covering 7 - 10 thousand years of middle earth history.
The Hobbit is an introductory tale of a Hobbit's journey into the wild, and also of the One Ring. Dont forget "...if it was not for a chance meeting......."
Very good, I am a huge fan of Tolkiens work and have become largely interested in everything to do with it. Including mythology, music, and history. I hate it when people base there opinion on the movies...The books have much more to offer. But anyways, thank you for this video, it was rather informative with a great soundtrack!
i wish they made a movie on a story from the silmarillion,i would prefer either beren and luthien, the fall of gondolin, the battle of unnumbered tears or the children of hurin(I think earendil's tale might be too long, and it wasnt a long chapter in the book,so it would be hard to make a movie on that).
I think Akallabeth would make a good movie. It explains a lot of things in the LotR books and movies, and it stands on its own better than the first age tales.
I had never heard of the 'Silmarillion' before today. It sounds pretty interesting and deffinatly fills some gaps for me. I know the Hobbit film has been announced, but do u think it's possible that this chapter(s) will be screened? I feel that there is somthing quite special about middle earth, set apart from other fantasy based worlds. I have never known so much work go into writting, I do hope some film or TV version is released, though I do now plan on reading this book myself.
Sauron's earthly body died after the fall of Numenor. Gandalf's earthly body died after combat with the Balrog, Saruman's earthly body died at Hobbiton after being stabbed by Wormtongue. They were all Maiar. Sorry if this has been repeated but I dont think my other comments got through
Gandalf/Olorin/Mithrandir/Incanus is a Maia (plural Maiar)and as cempoos said he is an Istari, one of the five Maiar sent by the Valar to rise against Sauron. Sauron is a Maia, a Maia of great power but Gandalf is a lesser one. wddude, Sauron didn't die after Isildur cut his finger because Sauron put a big amount of his power to the Ring which Isildur took and didn't destroy so Sauron's soul, after years, took a form and became the Necromancer who Gandalf discovered that was Sauron.
Was Gandalf a Maia? Because as far as i know his true nature is not specified in any of Tolkiens books. I only know that he came from across the sea, from the continent of Aman.
Where did you got that Gandalf was a Maia? As far as i know his race is unspecified. At least as far as i know the only thing we know about him is that he came from Aman. He was also "created" much later than the other Maiar. And you can't kill a Maia in battle. At best you can strip away his body, but his true force remains untouched. They are not like elfs who live eternal but are vurnable to wounds. If a Maia could be killed, Sauron would be dead after Isildur cut the ring from his hand.
Gandalf is one of the Istari (Wizards in Westron), which Tolkien described as Valar "of a sort". Gandalf's name in the West was Olorin, there was also a Maia called Olorin and it is possible that they are the same being.
yes... dont even speculate. Mithrandirwas his name to the race of men... the elves new him as Gandalf, but his true name and first name as a maiar was truely Olerin. The counsil of wizards was sent specificaly for the task of combining power to battle sauron-the they were forbidden to use the power indescretely and for sole purposes. A good example was the miar curimo, known as Suaramon the white, currupted by his own power,he conspired to attain the one ring for his own, instead of its destruction
Gandalf was an Istari or Maiar, who were emissaries of the Valar. They can be killed, I meant earthly body. Gandalf's body died after the balrog mortally wounded him. Saruman's earthly body was also slain in Hobbiton. Maiar were vulnerable to wounds like the elves. Also Sauron, who was a Maiar, himself who lost his earthly body
in the downfall of Numenor. My source is from Tolkien Companion J.E. Tyler published 1976 and Unfinished Tales JRR Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien published 1980
Sauron had no earthly body when the ring was cut from his finger by Isildur. He was in spirit form only. His body was destroyed in the downfall of Numenor. Gandalf & Saruman both Maiar lost their earthly bodies during the story of LOTR
I have a correction. morgoth did not get corrupted after the elves of the light flourished in the west. he was as is while arda was being shaped already.
The Silmarillion is like the Old Testament. Dark and morbid and full of violence. Someday, someone will attempt perhaps a mini series.. if they screw it up, they will be crucified.
Ok, it would be awesome if someone comes up and makes a series or film based on The SIlmarillion. there'd be spectacular battle scenes, the greatest views ever, gods fighting each other, Big Dragons, etc.
However, Bringing the story to screens would take at least 20 chapters (perhaps 2 hours each), and hundreds of characters( some with more than 6 children). Thus, I don't think that the viewers who didn't read the books would take seriously.
Joking apart LOTR does refer to elven children for example, Elrond's sons and daughter. Also the book mentions the fact that Aragorn and Arwen had a son, who would be half elf. So you can derive from that the elves were born the same way that human children were born.
The Silmarillion is best left alone as a book. Use your imagination by reading it. A TV Series would only cheapen it.
Ive said recently that I very much enjoyed the films of LOTR, as they were done sympathetically, although the films could not capture the magic of the books. This is because the human mind is infinite in its imagination and interpretation of things, which you can use when reading.
Totally aggree, however some parts of the LotR movies got a bit of the magic.
Because of the LotR films I started with the books, then the narn, the silm, the hobbit etc. So because of the films there are more new fans. However I aggree they shouldn't make a movie or a TV serie of the Silm.
Remember that this is all fictional and is a very good source of entertainment. Remember that you also have a life to live and everything that's written in this book must not be taken very seriously.
"one half percent of the PROFITS"... I hope the Tolkien estate wins... Why is New Line acting like a bunch of thieves? because they must be... ONLY ONE and a half % of profits... Bunch of crooks! Boycott New Line!
Not quite right, I think PJ did a pretty good job. I thought Merry & Pippin were slightly too silly in the 1st film, compared to their characters in the book, but on the whole was good, especially Aragorn, Gandalf and Saruman
I agree, Pip and Merry were a little too "childish", but overall all the caracters were great in their own way. Well, maybe Arwen... I mean, Elron's daughter riding against the Nine - that's a little too much.
Careful, don't go down that road. I sympathise with your view as LOTR & the Silmarillion are both very spiritual without thankfully being dogmatic. The professor would be embarrased and somewhat taken aback by being hailed as God.
I agree to, Tolkein was a devout Christian (which is one of the reasons his mythology never included gods, like other fantasy works. He was very touchy when it came to religion and found it very important for his works not to have a patheon of gods becouse he said it would become a heathen writing.
I do not think there is anything wrong with the story being so called heathen..That is the beauty of the books JRRT has allowed the reader to interpret the spirituality of the stories how he/she may.
That is true in a way. JRRT intended his works to be "aplicable" to the reader's experiences, and thus many religious or even political ideas can be derived from his books... but still I think he would feel ashamed or outraged if he'd heard his book was called heathen.
Tolkien thought of the vala as the same as he sore the pagan gods of ancient Scandinavia or ancient greek gods, wither or not they were seen as gods in his writing was not his concern as he was a christistain and sore work in the same way he sore ancient pagan religion and mythology, not real, fun and enjoyable and romantic but not real, so calling them gods/vala would be fine by him bt calling them angles as so many foolishly do he would see as heathenistic as it would mix his religion with myth.
I do not know why it is that he does not speak of Africans throughout its creation ... Apart from this part, I just love this book. It is really a unique and wonderful world that he has created!
If someone's share my opinion and want to exchange ideas I liked very much.
Don't even think about making such a beautiful book into yet another cheap, arrogant, shitty mainstream movie: an employment for more heartless celebrities and money grabbing directors like the evil peter jackson!LEAVE J.R.R. TOLKEINS ETHEREAL WORK TO PEACE!
This vid demonstrates why the Silmarillion cannot be made into a single movie. The Silmarillion is like the Old Testament; it has the raw material for a dozen movies in it. In fact almost any single chapter of the Book would require a full-length movie to do it justice....
morgoth was exiled to the unknown darkness with his foots taken away for asure that he never returns....and this movie is a false because all powerful Eru is called illuvatar not iluvatar, what a obvious mistake
Just a thought.. Sauron wasn't really Melkor's most *terrifying* servant, rather his most important and highest ranked. Don't get me wrong Sauron was still a Maiar sorcerer and kicked his share of Noldor ass, but on the battlefield.. Melkor had much more fearsome servants: Ancalagon the Black, Glaurung, Gothmog, or even Draugluin would've been scarier to face in my opinion. I could some up this book with one word: Epic
I'd say Peter Jackson should make a series, 3 seasons, each having 6-8 ep (50min each).

hello, I need the moral message of silmarillion. thanks.
solrogo 2 years ago
I dont think there is any messages about morality, rather a struggle between good and evil or virtue against evil deeds.
It's fantasy at it's best, more exciting than the fantasy of the Bible. More dragons and elves.

You must have a very small mind if you think Tolkiens works don't have any messages about not just morality, but many other human emotions.
And an even smaller mind if you think The Bible is just a "fantasy"

Listen to "Nightfall On Middle Earth" by the metal band "Blind Guardian". Does a near perfect retelling of the Silmarillion up through the fifth battle. It's the reason I ended up reading the book.
ultratone1985 3 years ago
I was going to nitpick but decided not to since it's so hard to concisely talk about everything in the book and you actually did a pretty good job.

BenBarfuss 3 years ago
Nothing will ever compare to the books benbarfuss, however I think the films were good in their own right. They were an adapatation and not meant to be a carbon copy of the books.
I think PJ did a good job, but everyone has a right to their own opinion.

Tolkien intended The Hobbit to be a children's book, but it became a phenomena for all ages.
But Tolkien did make the stories more mature when he wrote the lord of the rings, and that ended up being a pop culture bonanza!
I mean, look at what's happened, Peter Jackson made one hell of a movie series, making the popularity gain an extra boost of fame.

Nicely done, I agree with "WINGSDIPEDINBLOOD" The only tolkein book they give us in highschool to read is the Hobbit, which I read so far 9 times!!!

Sauron was easily seduces because he was a maiar of Aule . And the book says that Aule was closest to Sauron and that the only diference was that Aule wasn't jealous of the other valier their works and he didn't want to be this great tiran .

All this talk about maiar... are we forgetting the more GREAT things that occured? the creation of the silmarills is in itself a huge magnificent story. so powerful and mighty they were... and not Gandalf-not Sauromon-not SUARON-AND NOT MORGOTH,the most powerful of the greatest vala(as melkor ne way) could claim title as there maker... but an ELF.that shows u how badass the elves where.but maia-they where hardcore and know this-Suaron was the greatest of ALL maia, witch morgoth indeed beheld.

im drunk again so ill make this short. Fingolfin-mighty mighty fingolfin...the strongest of finways sons-zero doubt.
Dont forget "...if it was not for a chance meeting......."

i wish they made a movie on a story from the silmarillion,i would prefer either beren and luthien, the fall of gondolin, the battle of unnumbered tears or the children of hurin(I think earendil's tale might be too long, and it wasnt a long chapter in the book,so it would be hard to make a movie on that).

Sauron's earthly body died after the fall of Numenor. Gandalf's earthly body died after combat with the Balrog, Saruman's earthly body died at Hobbiton after being stabbed by Wormtongue. They were all Maiar. Sorry if this has been repeated but I dont think my other comments got through
rojonsmik 3 years ago 3
Gandalf/Olorin/Mithrandir/Incanus is a Maia (plural Maiar)and as cempoos said he is an Istari, one of the five Maiar sent by the Valar to rise against Sauron. Sauron is a Maia, a Maia of great power but Gandalf is a lesser one. wddude, Sauron didn't die after Isildur cut his finger because Sauron put a big amount of his power to the Ring which Isildur took and didn't destroy so Sauron's soul, after years, took a form and became the Necromancer who Gandalf discovered that was Sauron.
freespirit654 3 years ago
i was pretty shure that sauron was a balrog...
zaloturm 3 years ago
well, he wasn't :) take my word for it.
cempoos 3 years ago
No Sauron was of one of the Maiar, as was Gandalf.
Sauron was corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth) in the first Age.
The Maiar were of lesser rank than the Vala, so were immortal, although they could be killed in combat
rojonsmik 3 years ago
Was Gandalf a Maia? Because as far as i know his true nature is not specified in any of Tolkiens books. I only know that he came from across the sea, from the continent of Aman.
wddude1 3 years ago
Yes he was, get The Tolkien Companion by J.E. Tyler and Unfinished Tales by the man himself and his son Christopher Tolkien published in 1980
rojonsmik 3 years ago
Where did you got that Gandalf was a Maia? As far as i know his race is unspecified. At least as far as i know the only thing we know about him is that he came from Aman. He was also "created" much later than the other Maiar. And you can't kill a Maia in battle. At best you can strip away his body, but his true force remains untouched. They are not like elfs who live eternal but are vurnable to wounds. If a Maia could be killed, Sauron would be dead after Isildur cut the ring from his hand.
wddude1 3 years ago
Gandalf is one of the Istari (Wizards in Westron), which Tolkien described as Valar "of a sort". Gandalf's name in the West was Olorin, there was also a Maia called Olorin and it is possible that they are the same being.
cempoos 3 years ago
Yes Cempoos you are correct Olorin was Gandalf, check 'Unfinished Tales' pub. 1980 there is a chapter on the Istari and Maiar
rojonsmik 3 years ago
yes... dont even speculate.
Usmcspartan420 3 years ago
Gandalf was an Istari or Maiar, who were emissaries of the Valar. They can be killed, I meant earthly body. Gandalf's body died after the balrog mortally wounded him. Saruman's earthly body was also slain in Hobbiton. Maiar were vulnerable to wounds like the elves. Also Sauron, who was a Maiar, himself who lost his earthly body
in the downfall of Numenor. My source is from Tolkien Companion J.E. Tyler published 1976 and Unfinished Tales JRR Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien published 1980
rojonsmik 3 years ago
Sauron had no earthly body when the ring was cut from his finger by Isildur. He was in spirit form only. His body was destroyed in the downfall of Numenor. Gandalf & Saruman both Maiar lost their earthly bodies during the story of LOTR
rojonsmik 3 years ago
I have a correction. morgoth did not get corrupted after the elves of the light flourished in the west. he was as is while arda was being shaped already.
mushu144 3 years ago
The Silmarillion is like the Old Testament. Dark and morbid and full of violence. Someday, someone will attempt perhaps a mini series.. if they screw it up, they will be crucified.
Zenophobius 3 years ago
Ok, it would be awesome if someone comes up and makes a series or film based on The SIlmarillion. there'd be spectacular battle scenes, the greatest views ever, gods fighting each other, Big Dragons, etc.
However, Bringing the story to screens would take at least 20 chapters (perhaps 2 hours each), and hundreds of characters( some with more than 6 children). Thus, I don't think that the viewers who didn't read the books would take seriously.
Pierin24 3 years ago
I'm still juggling with this question: since elves are immortals, do they get born with a full adult physiology? Must be quite painfull for ladies...
HawkFest 3 years ago
Joking apart LOTR does refer to elven children for example, Elrond's sons and daughter. Also the book mentions the fact that Aragorn and Arwen had a son, who would be half elf. So you can derive from that the elves were born the same way that human children were born.
rojonsmik 3 years ago
The Silmarillion is best left alone as a book. Use your imagination by reading it. A TV Series would only cheapen it.
Ive said recently that I very much enjoyed the films of LOTR, as they were done sympathetically, although the films could not capture the magic of the books. This is because the human mind is infinite in its imagination and interpretation of things, which you can use when reading.
rojonsmik 3 years ago
Totally aggree, however some parts of the LotR movies got a bit of the magic.
Because of the LotR films I started with the books, then the narn, the silm, the hobbit etc. So because of the films there are more new fans. However I aggree they shouldn't make a movie or a TV serie of the Silm.

It looks as though 'The Hobbit' may not become a movie either, The Tolkien Estate is suing New Line Cinema for £77 million.
This was because New Line agreed, before the films were made, to pay the estate seven and one half percent of the profits.
Also if they dont pay up the Tolkien Estate will block any moves to make 'The Hobbit' film
rojonsmik 4 years ago
"one half percent of the PROFITS"... I hope the Tolkien estate wins... Why is New Line acting like a bunch of thieves? because they must be... ONLY ONE and a half % of profits... Bunch of crooks! Boycott New Line!

Not quite right, I think PJ did a pretty good job. I thought Merry & Pippin were slightly too silly in the 1st film, compared to their characters in the book, but on the whole was good, especially Aragorn, Gandalf and Saruman
rojonsmik 3 years ago
I agree, Pip and Merry were a little too "childish", but overall all the caracters were great in their own way. Well, maybe Arwen... I mean, Elron's daughter riding against the Nine - that's a little too much.

I totally agree with you, Rojonsmik!
cempoos 4 years ago
I agree to, Tolkein was a devout Christian (which is one of the reasons his mythology never included gods, like other fantasy works. He was very touchy when it came to religion and found it very important for his works not to have a patheon of gods becouse he said it would become a heathen writing.
converter7 4 years ago
He did create a pantheon of lesser gods under Illuvatar (The Creator). These were the Vala, although some may say these were angels.
Thankfully JRRT did not impose his Christianity on the reader and allowed the reader to interpret what they may, spiritually wise.
rojonsmik 4 years ago
I do not think there is anything wrong with the story being so called heathen..That is the beauty of the books JRRT has allowed the reader to interpret the spirituality of the stories how he/she may.
He did not impose his own beliefs onto the reader
rojonsmik 4 years ago
That is true in a way. JRRT intended his works to be "aplicable" to the reader's experiences, and thus many religious or even political ideas can be derived from his books... but still I think he would feel ashamed or outraged if he'd heard his book was called heathen.
IliaOgromnij 4 years ago
Tolkien thought of the vala as the same as he sore the pagan gods of ancient Scandinavia or ancient greek gods, wither or not they were seen as gods in his writing was not his concern as he was a christistain and sore work in the same way he sore ancient pagan religion and mythology, not real, fun and enjoyable and romantic but not real, so calling them gods/vala would be fine by him bt calling them angles as so many foolishly do he would see as heathenistic as it would mix his religion with myth.

This vid demonstrates why the Silmarillion cannot be made into a single movie. The Silmarillion is like the Old Testament; it has the raw material for a dozen movies in it. In fact almost any single chapter of the Book would require a full-length movie to do it justice....

Melkor had much more fearsome servants: Ancalagon the Black, Glaurung, Gothmog, or even Draugluin would've been scarier to face in my opinion. I could some up this book with one word: Epic
