they were small sections of white flying fish fuse, its specially designed for these purposes!

fair do's, what was it like?

my cake had ~50 1" starmines and shells linked with fast visco with red, blue, green, magenta, white, glitter and c6 stars, whistle inserts and every shell and starmine had at least one salute in it . It went in ~20 seconds. it had to be the best cake I've ever seen but it was raining so I didn't want to take the camera out and i didn't think it would be as good as it was

yeah i was really carefull with the timings, it seemed to pay off! just quick fuse for the first stage star mines, then regular 1.8mm visco doing the rest!
