yeah, when he says the sentences, he is pronouncing it like an american. but in his other videos, when he is speaking in sentences, he sounds waaay japanese, and he does it really fast. i was like. omg, they used a real japanese guy for this...but yeah. in this part, i dont know why he did it. i guess for the sake of the newbies. but nonetheless, his cirriculum..cant spell...is great

referring to yourself as a teacher isn't impolite, especially if your teaching something.

It is rather impolite to give yourself a title like -kun, -san, -chan, -sama etc. though.

well, as far as I heard: "sensei" (meaning "teacher")would be more like an honor title just like "san", "sama" - otherwise you would rather use the neutral "kyoushi" if you refer to yourself (but I could be wrong - I'm a beginner in Japanese)

@Enviedrange: In what way would it be different to use the suffix "sensei" together with your own name than using the suffix "san" together with your own name? Both are honorific suffixes. Just as you don't say "san" about yourself, you don't say your own name and then "sensei" when you're talking about yourself, because that would sound like you are respecting yourself a lot.

Talking about your job as a teacher is done in other ways, without the usage of suffixes on your own name.

Sensei isn't an honorific suffix. sensei literally means teacher in Japanese.

I still think it's honorific - it indicates that (you think that) someone has a considerable amount of knowledge and should be respected for that.

AFAIK, it's always stupid to give yourself a suffix like that.

LeTinctoire, I couldn't have said it better myself. "sensei" is indeed a honorific suffix , just as "san" and "sama".

There are other words that also means "teacher" that can't be used as a suffix, like 教師 (kyoushi) for example. Adding "sensei" is just like adding "san" or some other kind of honorific suffix attached to the name. You add it to show that you respect the person, and it should never be used with your own name unless you want to sound like you respect yourself a lot.

You'd normally leave anata out, as some times it can be taken as an insult; even not at such times, like in the example you have given, anata is implied (since you're talking to them, not yourself) so it would usually be left out anyways.

It's "doshite". You probably got that meaning from an anime, but that's just the connotation found and translated by the subber. It's generally used as "why?"

Nihon is pronounced either Ni-hon or Ni-ho-n. "Tomato tomahto," if you will.

Eigo should be spelled with an I, but can be pronounced "ay-go," "ay-ee-go," etc.

Therefore it really doesn't matter.

(He is pronouncing a lot of it incorrectly, however.)

actually I disagree with you there, it is not the same as pronouncing tomato differently. ni-hon is incorrect as is ay go. Although it is being pretty fussy and you will be understood either way, but if you want to try and get it just right then you should try and pronunciate each syllable.

No you need the des as said above, so it says my mobile phone is, - it is my mobile. Otherwise you say my mobile which doesn't work in Japanese (though they'd understand).

Plus, it's a MOBIL phone.

I would like to take back my comment of this being good. It's is great that you;re willing to teach people, but there are quite a few errors and things you left out. I found that if you put all the vocab on flash cards, and learn to look at the japanese word and say the english translation until you have them all perfect, then look at the english word and say the japanese translation, and practice this everyday, you will have the words memorized in no time! I also put english sentences on one sides of the card and japanese translation on the other, and try to translate. it's just how I learn the best, and I really do want to learn how to speak Japanese.

Sometimes they will use "Nani?" as a stand alone question for "what?" If you want to use a polite form, they say "nan desu ka?" taking of the "i". hope that helps.
