Marriage was not created by government, but religious institutions. While gays should get the same rights as married heterosexual couples they should not be called marriages but civil unions. If they want to get married that is between them and their church. Also Catholic and other religious adoption agencies should not be forced to give children to gay couples because it is against their religion.
They're not relating the term 'marriage' to religion. The reason they're asking to legalize same-sex marriage is so they will benefit from ALL the privileges married couples have. According to the law, civil union/domestic partnership DO NOT offer all the 1000+ rights heterosexual couples get. People can call it whatever they want, I don't think same-sex couples really care about the terms, they only want the rights they deserve.
I understand that the ideas behind marriage is greatly influenced by religion. But in this case, I'm putting religions and politics aside and focusing on everyone in general and their freedom to benefit from the same rights everyone gets. Just because some religions find same-sex preferences appalling, doesn't mean they have a say in personal freedom. They can't make that decision for everyone.

Marriage was not created by government, but religious institutions. While gays should get the same rights as married heterosexual couples they should not be called marriages but civil unions. If they want to get married that is between them and their church. Also Catholic and other religious adoption agencies should not be forced to give children to gay couples because it is against their religion.

They're not relating the term 'marriage' to religion. The reason they're asking to legalize same-sex marriage is so they will benefit from ALL the privileges married couples have. According to the law, civil union/domestic partnership DO NOT offer all the 1000+ rights heterosexual couples get. People can call it whatever they want, I don't think same-sex couples really care about the terms, they only want the rights they deserve.

I understand that the ideas behind marriage is greatly influenced by religion. But in this case, I'm putting religions and politics aside and focusing on everyone in general and their freedom to benefit from the same rights everyone gets. Just because some religions find same-sex preferences appalling, doesn't mean they have a say in personal freedom. They can't make that decision for everyone.
